State of the Forums

Hi folks,

Our team has been hard at work fixing the issues you've seen on the Norton Community. I appreciate your patience during this very stressful time. I know change is hard, and learning new processes can be frustrating. I am grateful to have such an understanding group. I wanted to share some of the progress we've made on the community, and show you the things we're working on. I'll update the status of the problems that we are still working to fix as they get resolved.

FIXES

- Indent button does not add indents to post (edited Sept 24, 2015)
- See who clicked Me Too on a post (edited Sept 24, 2015)
- Allow users to jump to last post in thread (Edited April 30, 2015)
- User Account merging (between the different community languages) (Edited April 30, 2015)
- Add "edited" information to OP or replies, along with date and time of edit (edited March 10, 2015)
- Add breadcrumbs (Home > Forums > Category > Board) to the bottom of threads (edited March 10, 2015)
- See who gave Kudos to a post (edited Feb 11, 2015)
- Include pagination links at top of thread (added below OP) (edited Feb 11, 2015)
- Delete autosave draft once user clicks "Save" (edited Dec 2, 2014)
- Images remain unmoderated (edited Nov 10, 2014)
- Notification emails sent for content that is not published (e.g. staged Blog posts or announcements) (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- Links in subscription emails go to 1st post in thread (only seen for threads that span multiple pages) (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- Added ">>" (jump to last page) and "<<" (jump to first page) links for threads with multiple pages (edited Nov 6, 2014)
- "Number of posts" on categories, boards and mini user profiles (seen on threads) changed to OP + Replies (edited Nov 4, 2014)
- On Chrome 38, previewing a message results in a blank screen (edited Nov 4, 2014)
- Autosubscribe (Account > Edit > "Automatically subscribe me to all topics I participate in") functions correctly
- Fixed error 503 when attempting to access account
- Replies in threads are now in Chronological Order, despite editing or inline-replies (NOTE: threads that existed prior to the fix cannot be re-sorted. This is fixed for new threads and new edits)
- Autosave drafts feature added
- Quoting a post adds the quoted user's name to the quote box (NOTE: it make take a few days for you to see it. javascript cache must be cleared first)
- Kudos transferred from old community
- "Entire board" subscriptions allow for both "original post (OP)" and "OP+ replies" subscriptions
- Default sort for Board is "latest post or reply"

KNOWN ISSUES

- Adding kudos or clicking Subscribe messes with the "time to edit" display
- Add Macros, image upload, and Quote functionality to mobile layout
- Allow user to see her/his unapproved image when previewing a post
- Delete autosave draft once user clicks "Save"
- Allow use of uploaded images as avatars
- "Mark all as read" leaves posts unread
- "Search" lists only OPs, though occasionally the results are threads that contain replies with the search terms
- Replies not appearing after posting; must logout/login again to see post
- notification emails sent for all translations of subscribed content (e.g. Announcement blog articles translated in all 5 forum languages)

I think those are the ones being reported on the Community. There are certainly more things being worked on: some admin functionality, some fixes to translations and terms, and performance improvements. But I think this covers the major issues. If there is a critical issue that you think should be included, and you don't see it listed, please reply with that information. A list of steps to reproduce, along with screenshots are always helpful. So is the OS and browser, along with versions. Thanks!

Re: State of the Forums

Thanks Tony.

I don't know about others but I find that really helpful.

I assume that the "Known Issues" list is not in priority order.  I will refrain from suggesting an order, you are paid to do such things.

Two things stand out to me as missing from the Known Issues list

  1. Is the request to have navigation at the bottom of the page.  The Navigation bar that in this thread starts with the House, Forums, Norton Products, Forum Feedback.  I think this is needed at the bottom in the same way as the pagination is needed at the top.  The pages are long and frequently scrolling all the way from one end to the other is a little frustrating.  I am sure this has been mentioned before.
  2. Changing the "new" count on the forums list pages from a count of new threads to new posts (OP + replies).  This seems to go with the "Mark all as read" issue where I currently see a lot of posts not being marked as read.

I'm sure others will have other things to add but I think your list is a very encouraging and positive initiative.

1) Added. Thanks.
2) Yep, just forgot to add "categories" to my item "'Number of posts' on categories, boards and mini user profiles (seen on threads) changed to OP + Replies". And how about a compromise..."Mark all as read" leaves a few a lot of posts unread

Re: State of the Forums

Tony,

One bug I've been dealing with is with longer threads if I click the new number to the right of the thread I can initially see the first new post of that thread until the page fully loads, then I need to scroll down again to find the first new post.

I have this with both FF and IE 11.  I don't know if screenshots would help here but I know I'm not alone.

Thanks,
Dave

Tony,

Currently the advanced search feature only appears to return results for the INITIAL post which started the thread. It does NOT appear to find any results in comments to the initial post of a thread.

IMHO, that is a pretty serious flaw in how the feature currently works.

Thanks

Re: State of the Forums

I'm just making my use of the forum as easy as possible. No subscriptions, no notifications, or labels or macros. None of that stuff.

I just go to the latest post on a thread, and work from there. I'm a great believer in the KISS principle.

No point in getting uptight about things. You'll only lose more hair, and get worry lines

I got them, already ..........

Re: State of the Forums

Thanks to Tony and behind the scene people for upcoming fixes. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Why dont you bring back the colors / colouring feature back, avoiding the issues with google chrome (note that the colour spill affected only google chrome users during testing) which was noted during testing? Some other nice to have, low priority features to be added to list are the image in signature , inline image holder / placement, listing out all users who are online rather than displaying any ten (you may add one or two more columns for it) or putting a green flag on the mini profile, status of 'idea board' etc. A few of the listed features were already there during testing, but was removed due to errors and bad coding. . . . . Please bring back those optimised.

Re: State of the Forums

I have had to use the  Log out/Log in feature since day one. Some times my post will show right away but if I go to another thread and then return it's not there. If I Log out/Log in it reappears. Also if I got to Account- Subscriptions and unsubscribe it does not take effect until I Log out/Log in.

Thanks for the updates,Tony. It is appreciated.

Re: State of the Forums

OK, so for the logout/login thing, let me see if I understand this correctly:
1) login to the community
2) post a reply to a thread, and click Save - allow it to complete
3) Thread page loads up, showing the thread that you posted to. Scroll to bottom of page
Result: Post does not appear on the thread (what about reloading the page instead of logging out? Does that do anything?)

4) Logout of the community/login again (from that page? Or somewhere else? After how much time?)
5) Go to the thread again (and did it just load up again when you login again?)
Result: Post appears on the thread

Re: State of the Forums

Sometimes the new post will appear when you post and sometimes not.

If it does appear right away, a refresh of the page or going to another thread and coming back, the post is gone. Then Log out/Log in with no delay and it appears.

If the post does not appear when you post,  refresh doesn't help and only a Log out/Log in will work.

Re: State of the Forums

Hi, Tony. Same thing happened to me. Post not showing after Save. I went to Account clicked on that, and post not displayed. I tried refreshing the page, and no dice.

I then went to another thread, and came back. Still no post, so I logged out and back in, and Voila---  post  showing !

FIXES
- Quoting a post adds the quoted user's name to the quote box (NOTE: it make take a few days for you to see it. javascript cache must be cleared first)

Hi Tony:

This feature worked once for me (25-Oct-2014??) but it seems to have stopped functioning again.  I cleared my entire Firefox v. 33.0 browsing history, including the cache, from within Firefox (History | Clear Recent History | Everything) as well as with CCleaner v. 4.19 today and still can't get it to work.

I also tested with IE 9.0 after deleting my entire browsing history (Tools | Internet Options | General | Browsing History | Delete) and addition of the user's name to a quote doesn't work with that browser either.

My Internet cache is set to clear automatically on exit for both FF33 and IE9.

Re: State of the Forums

Tony sorry to come up with this one a little late in the day.

I know it has been mentioned before and thought it was in your list but when I look again I do not see it.  Please correct me if I am wrong (again..).

Can we please be enabled to mark individual posts as "unread".  I often read a post and think, I want to come back to that, but once it is "read" how can I find it again?  If I could mark it as "unread" then I would be guided back to it for further consideration and possibly a helpful response.

Re: State of the Forums

Tony I am pleased to see that "Mark all as read" seems to now be doing a much better job but oddly is still not doing what it says.  I am posting here in case the team is not aware of the new situation.

Previously "Mark all as read" seemed to just mark the first post of "new" threads as read.  Now however I note that it also seems to mark many of the "new" replies as read but not all and I wonder why.

I have noticed this on a couple of forums and if it helps here are two images of the situation I noticed this evening in the NIS/N306/NAV forum.

Before:

After:

Having looked at these images again I now realise that it is the thread which was not "new" where the "new" replies have not been cleared.  I will try and keep my eyes open to see if this is what happens elsewhere.

[Edit - I can now confirm that in threads that do not have the title in bold (i.e. the original post is deemed to be "read" then "Mark all posts in Forum as read" does not mark the replies as read.  However if the title is bold (i.e. the first post has not been read) then "Mark all posts in Forum as read" marks the first post and all replies as read.

So good progress... but still not quite there...]

[Edit/Edit - I have realised that this may have been the position for some time.  It may just be that I have not had so many "New" threads needing clearing for some time and it is this change which has revealed this particular functionality.  So if I have told you nothing new.... sorry for wasting your time.   ]

Re: State of the Forums

And another thing.....  or how to really brighten up Tony's day.

I am sure this has been mentioned before but I now realise that it does not seem to be in the list of things to be done.

May we please have the option to sort subscriptions by date (as well as by title) so that I can clear out all the old and no longer useful subscriptions thus reducing the list to something that may be of use.  The ability to delete multiple entries in one go would also be nice.

Not vital, not urgent but it would be good to have at some point.  Please.

Re: State of the Forums

There are actually 2 issues queued for this one:

1) a more general "add more fields to the subscription view page" so you can view and sort your current subscriptions
2) once a thread is locked (which we typically do after a month without replies) there's no chance of any subscription emails coming on that thread, so we blow out the subscriptions for that thread. This also helps with site performance, as it's less information that needs to load.

That looks great.  Thanks Tony.

So that seems to show that you plan to do even more than is listed at the top.  That is great.  Should we still add things that are not listed at the top if we think of them or should we leave it for now unless something appears urgent/critical?

Re: State of the Forums

I think we've generally captured the major & critical forum issues from the members in the above list. There are considerably more tickets in the queue than listed in my 1st post, though. Some are backend, some are future development, and some are performance enhancements. The ones I listed are things that have been reported on the forums, and are particular "pain points" for forum members. My list is to keep the those issues updated, so you know the status.

That said, if you post something to Forum Feedback, and I've responded that I've put it in the queue, it's been entered. Issues that get lots of complaints or that folks rally behind will make it on this list. Thanks for helping me clarify things.

Re: State of the Forums

Most links will redirect from the old community to the new one. It might be time to update those links, if only a few at a time? It won't be too hard to find them either - the old forum URL had the subject in it as well, so you can just search by those words.

Hi Tony, why cant the backend team develop a script for redirection of old url to new ones. Our community links are used outside the limit of ourselves and hence this would be a good idea. That would be a better way to handle the url issue as a whole. Just my note...

Re: State of the Forums

Hi Tony, This is what I meant to tell : A link or arrow icon in the pages to help user go to the header / the top of page (from bottom) and another link or arrow icon to go to the last / bottom / footer of the page (from top) . Not necessary on thread listing / forum board pages, but on the pages where messages are posted (ie, individual thread) . Okay, this will not be much useful for users of laptops and personal computers unless the discussion is extra long, but will be helpful for mobile / tablet users to scroll long discussions. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . , Anyway, I admire your efforts to keep everything in order.
