Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Norton on the Mac say it needs to add the Norton Security Extension to Safari, there is only a remind me Later and Add Choice.  How do I stop stop the pop-up and not let it add the extension?  It is like a virus!

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

To understand more about the issue in Safari, would like to clarify / confirm if you got the following steps during your safari extension installation (Safari 9.x). For your easy confirmation, we have attached a document (Safari_SafeWebExtension_InstallFlow.pdf) which explains the extension installation flow in Safari. Please let us know if you have got all these three steps during your installation.

In case, you have not received any of the attached flow, please let us know at which of the exact step its failing. You can also quit and re-launch to follow the same attached steps and confirm if things work fine.

If you are still facing the issue, to deep dive more, please follow the below instructions for us to troubleshoot.

  1. Download the tool from here:ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/mactools/GatherSymantecInfo.zip
  2. After download, with the file on the Mac client where you are facing these issues, double-click on the file to expand it. It will contain the GatherSymantecInfo.command file as well as a folder called SupportFiles.
  3. Double-click on GatherSymantecInfo.command. It will open a Terminal window.
  4. Enter your administrator password (it will not echo on-screen) and press Enter.
  5. Gathering information... message will appear.
  6. When it completes to run, you can find "SymantecInfo.zip" archive under Desktop directory.

Hello dandunbar  I have flagged this thread to be moved to the Norton for Mac board since it doesn't appear to be related to the Core router.

The problem is I can't stop it from trying to install it, not that I am having problems with it being installed.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I do not use Mac, but on Windows systems there is a pop up that wants you to install the browser extensions. If there is no Don't ask again option, try clicking on the Add choice. On Windows systems this opens a browser page where you can choose the extensions you want to set up. If you do not want to change anything, just closing that browser page seems to stop the pop ups in Windows. Hopefully it works the same on Macs.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

dandunbar I recently had to do a removal and reinstall on one of my PC's. I got the same popup in the system tray that you are speaking of and the third time it appeared there was an option "never remind me again". I clicked that and it has not reappeared.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

This is how the dialog looks like. I can't find any switch to stop it prompting the same question again and again.

In my case the browser is Chrome and the operating system is macOS High Sierra.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Did you try clicking the Add button to see if it works like I described in Windows installations?

And/Or have you seen this popup more than 3 times as SoulAsylum noted, where you may see a Do Not Ask Again prompt?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I would not click the ADD or Remind me later until I confirm the message is from Norton, not some malware. I would think that when I quit Norton, the window would go away. It doesn't.

I suspect this is malware...or Norton is really sloppy, which I find hard to believe.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I am a longtime Norton Security Suite user with PCs and a Mac. On my MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.13.1, I get this same message constantly in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. I do not want any Norton Security extensions in any of my browsers. I have tried selecting the Add option repeatedly and then not selecting any components. I have tried the Remind Me Later option repeatedly, but I never see any option other than Add or Remind Me Later. I can find no setting to disable this prompt. The window appears whenever I start up one of the browsers, and the window provides no way to dismiss it, other than to select either Add or Remind Me Later. So, at this point, a penalty of using the Norton Security software is that I must click the Remind Me Later button every time I start up any browser. This seems completely wrong, and I am probably going to investigate switching to another security suite if it is not addressed soon.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work the same on the Mac. On Windows, the problem doesn't occur.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

you only have to select "Remind Me Later" for three days then you'll get "No, Thanks" option on the forth day *, you have to repeat the same for each browser if you have more than one installed

I tested and confirmed with Safari and Firefox

* you'll get one message per day for each installed browser

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Not very helpful for someone who is web developer, have 3 Macs and on each few browsers. Im not going to press "Remind me later" as I don't want to be reminded later.

For now only solution is removing Norton and if you need antivirus - finding something else.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Hello Tomasz T Unfortunately until the development team releases a fix to disable this obvious marketing the solution is as fiod3s has described and earlier posts suggested. A small amount of effort on your part will remedy the issue until the popups are disabled through live updates. We hope you will remain with Norton in the interim.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Hello

I'm really sorry that your Norton experience was not what you expected.

Norton is trying to offer safety while our customers access web browsers to provide safe online browsing.

For this reason our product will alert users once in a day if they have not installed the Norton browser extensions that are designed to protect the users on web.

However if product learns that the user is not interested after he dismisses the popup 3 times, ( selecting remind me option ) he will be offered a "No Thanks" option.

Selecting "No thanks" option will help the users to opt out from Norton web protection.

I would still request you to try our web protection extensions, and stay safe on the web.

Also thanks fiod3s for providing a solution. Please follow the same steps as fiod3s mentioned.

"you have to select "Remind Me Later" for three days then you'll get "No, Thanks" option on the forth day *, you have to repeat the same for each browser if you have more than one installed

* you'll get one message per day for each installed browser"

Thanks,

Balu

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I am running Safari 10.1.2 on Yosemite and I get the same problem, except I already installed it several days ago. It keeps asking nonetheless, and when I click Install, it takes me to the page showing I already have it installed.

Permalink, I am running Safari 11.0.1 on MacOS High Sierra. I just purchased a new MacBook pro and migrated to it from a MacBook pro that was running Yosemite. I have Norton Security 7.6 installed on this new MacBook Pro. I am getting the same message every time I login and start up Safari. I have responded to the popup and "added" the extension *every* tie and yet it still keeps asking to add the extension *every* time. Can someone please fix this issue?!

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I have not had the laptop for 3 days yet to confirm the work around will resolve the issue.

I already have the extension installed and have installed numerous times, a real PITA.  Norton, should not keep asking me to install the extensions, if it's already installed. It does not give me a lot of confidence that Norton is properly protecting my system if it cannot even figure out if the most current version is already installed...the optics are real bad here.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

This is absolutely atrocious. I've been getting the exact same popup when using Safari on my Mac for over a week and I dismiss it each time. It keeps returning. At this point Norton is literally malware. Please get rid of your ugly popup, and perhaps the ugly UI in the rest of Norton for Mac, or I will be purchasing Kaspersky before the week is out.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I find it ludicrous that the creators of anti-virus software would even think that it's ok to have such a pop-up and not provide a way to dismiss it without 1) Installing the extension or 2) Letting it remind you again in the future. What an absolute nuisance!

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

As a few people have vaguely and unhelpfully alluded to above, the trolls responsible for Norton realized the screw up and fixed it in Norton 76. After updating and dismissing the pop up several times you will eventually be prompted with an option to cease the pop up assault. The fact that this was ever a problem speaks volumes to the lack of UX work being done at Symantec, but oh well, at least it stops the viruses pretty well.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

All: From arjunyg last post. There are no "trolls responsible for Norton" here on the forums. Everyone with the exception of Admins and employees donate their time to assist everyone without compensation. Just a little respect for that would be awesomely appreciated. FWIW!! These popups are a marketing issue as we are all too aware of, with the solution as having been given several times throughout the thread. Annoying as it is no amount of complaining will expedite their removal. I CAN tell you the Norton Dev teams are aware of the complaints and tickets have been raised. Therefore we are all at the whelm of time as there is a matrix developers must follow. I too look forward to these not reappearing at a later time as well. Have a safe and happy holidays everyone.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

SoulAsylum AV is critical software, and the issue described in this topic for me should be high priority. If Norton Dev teams are aware but couldn't solve the problem then for me they either don't have access to source code or were told to leave as it is or don't know how to fix it.

The fix for this problem are:

  • One switch FOR EACH NOTIFICATION in the Setting that once and for ever will disable given notification
  • One button ON EVERY DISPLAYED NOTIFICATION that once and for ever will disable given notification

Being forced to dismiss notification more than once before letting user disable it IS NOT A SOLUTION.
Can you please let norton team know that their users are not retarded and can make decisions for themselves when given choice first time? We don't need few days to make decision.

arjunyg meant people responsible for norton, that for me are people employed by norton and working on this AV - AV that trolls users that PAID with some stupid notification. How to call those people if not trolls?

I've lost my patience, Kaspersky doesn't have problems like this and I can recommend it to anyone here that's tired of this situation.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

+1 this is ridiculous.  I have even installed the Norton Safe Web extension but the message keeps appearing.  I just don't want to install Safe Search, Identity Safe and Norton Home Page (cuz honestly, they're just affiliate-revenue-generating bloat). Can't believe I have to go through 3 x Remind me later clicks to get rid of it.  I can't fathom how this managed to get designed, coded, tested, reviewed, approved and deployed without anyone stopping to think "maybe this is going to annoy some of our users...".  I switched to Norton from various other providers because it was the least intrusive and best-designed platform.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

Hahahahaha good joke. Norton is among the most obnoxious AV programs out there. Honestly I don’t know why they don’t throw out the entire Norton software and just start selling SEP without the enterprise management part. It’s just so much better and doesn’t look like a bunch of monkeys were paid $5 an hour to design a UI in CSS.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

This has been driving me crazy since the last Norton update.

So... say NO to remind me 3 times and the pop-up goes away but leaves the blocker installed?

By the way - I got a "dangerous web-site - do not go there" message with diagnosis "viruses" from what looks like a perfectly genuine web-shop for a well recommended product.  How do I know this is not a false alarm - I didn't buy my Xmas gifts as intended. I don't expect the store to see my messages that they are blocked to Norton customers until after the vacation. (messages sent from a tablet not a PC)

You can submit the web site url to   virustotal.com   If it comes back with no other detections, you can report a false positive to Norton. You can report false positive indications here https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension

I was trying to figure out how to stop this same popup on my Macs - I've had the software for many months and I constantly get the popup on all browsers to try to make me install Norton toolbars, make Norton my homepage, etc, and I don't want to - I should be able to just select in the configuration that I do not want that ONCE.

Considering the replies given by the Norton employees on this thread and the same amount of troubles other users experience with this software, I will be changing to another vendor for my virus protection, etc., once my current subscription expires (if I can withstand a couple more months of having to weed through their popups) or sooner.

Was hoping for a solution, but I see that the only real solution will be finding another vendor. I guess I will begin the process of trying out new software offerings.

Re: Stop Norton from installing Safari Extension
