Strange messages on my Mac

Hi:

I started getting 2 new strange pop-up messages from Norton Internet Security after I restart my Mac that I have not seen before. I didn't add anything new to my computer, I didn't make changes.

1. "The service 'common internet file system (cifs)' is starting on your mac. If you don't change firewall settings, the firewall will block the connection."....

2. "The service "Kerberos" is starting on your mac. If you don't change firewall settings, the firewall will block the connection."....

These messages are followed by "if you don't change firewall settings, the firewall will block connection from other computers to this service on your mac. Then one can pick from 4 options:

- Allow all connections to this service

- Allow local network connections

- Deny all connections to this service

- Don't change firewall settings

I do not know why these messages are coming up, which option out of the 4 I have to select, who wants to use these services and why now, if I need to worry that maybe something on my computer was or will be compromised if I don't pick the right option.  Hopefully someone familiar with Norton can tell me what these messages mean and how to deal with them.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Strange messages on my Mac

Hello suzy2014 I would choose this setting - Allow local network connections.

The services you are seeing asking for access are common on Mac.

Thanks, SoulAsylum. I would love to do that but I can no longer get back to the menu that I mentioned......I tried.   I am no computer expert, as probably is quite obvious....

Re: Strange messages on my Mac

If that message reappears that would be the selection for you if/when it does. If you are not having current connectivity issues things would appear normal at this point.

Re: Strange messages on my Mac

Thanks. I just hope that having left the option as "Allow all connections to this service" doesn't leave my computer open to "uninvited guests"....

Re: Strange messages on my Mac

Hello suzy, although the selection should have been - Allow local network connections you should be good to go since your Norton product will do its job to protect you.
