strange new installed programs

This topic belongs somewhere else but no named forum seems appropriate so I post this here.  A moderator should move it to whatever is the right place.

We suddenly find a Weather Channel Desktop (not actually on the desktop),  and a Playsushi browser add-on.  The playsushi thing seems to be related to some terms found in some webpages that contain double-underlines which when mouse is positioned on the link, brings up a "Playsushi Entertainment" window with other links on it.

Does anyone know about these two things?  I strongly believe that they are some form of adware.

System:

Windows 7, Internet Explorer version 8

Re: strange new installed programs

This continues to appear troublesome.  Even in messages on this community forum, there are phrases or words, like Norton Removal Tool and virus and work which show up as double-underlined links which point to a Playsushi Entertainment window containing other links to click on.  I do not click on those links, I just put the mouse arrow on the word or words with the double underline and the Playsushi window appears.

This MUST be a problem that Norton (in this case  maybe Norton 360?) should be able to detect and stop.  What else should be known about this?

Hi g_cafe_c,

Does "Playsushi" show up in Windows Programs and Features?  If so, you should be able to remove following the instructions given in the link below.  I would advise exiting your browser completely before uninstalling the pest.

Re: strange new installed programs

Likewise the Weather Channel Desktop should be found in Programs and Features, from where it can be uninstalled.  If the uninstaller fails there is a manual removal method given here:

You don't happen to have kids with access to an administrator account on this computer, do you?

Re: strange new installed programs

SendOfJive,

Both of those programs or items are listed in Control Panel --> Programs And Features.  Does this mean that we could use Add/Remove in Control Panel to get rid of them?

The particular machine only requires or has one way to sign on - only one password for an expected one user.  No kids really.

I assume that these or at least one of them (Weather Channel Desktop and Playsushi) is malware.  Norton 360 will not run liveupdates and it will not run scans.  This is a new problem only seeming to occur starting today, and today is the date that both of the items are found listed as installed as seen in control panel's Programs And Features.

Why the "ps" extension in one of the links you gave?  Is that something like a pdf file?

Re: strange new installed programs

SendOfJive,

You gave a "Deactivate" hyperlink about the playsushi website.  I am really afraid to visit the site, since safeweb.norton.com shows many comments telling us that www.playsushi.com  is a dangerous, infectious site.  There is a big green and white check mark, yes; but nearly all of the user comments say that the site is bad, dangersous, risky.

Re: strange new installed programs

The Playsushi link I provided merely gives illustrated instructions for removing the application via Add/Remove Programs.  It is safe, but you can do the operation without visiting the page - just select Playsushi in Add/Remove Programs and click to remove it and reboot your PC when finished.  The ps isn't a file extension, it is an abbreviation for deactivate playsushi.  While Playsushi has some questionable spyware-like qualities, it seems at least somewhat legitimate, as does the Weather Channel Desktop application.  Does anyone else have access to your PC?  These seem to be the types of programs that one would download and install intentionally or have been tricked into installing, rather than having them installed via some drive-by exploit.  And if someone in your household did install them, they may have installed other things which could be outright malware that is causing the issues with Norton.  It also seems possible that someone could have visited the Playsushi site and gotten the browser add-on there along with some bundled malware, perhaps.  Let us know if you are the only user on this PC.  If not, someone may have some 'splainin' to do.

Remove Weather Channel Desktop via Add/Remove Programs, as well.

Only two of us here do much on the internet with this machine; it is not MY machine, although I use it frequently.  The main user found a game to play online; I am not sure what website had a link to the game.  The main owner seems to not have actually downloaded a game but I'm not really sure.  Best I can tell, the game was played on a website, associated with playsushi.

One thing I would like to do is to try to uninstall both that Weather Channel thing and the Playsushi add-on; but I need permission from the main owner/user to do these uninstalls.  Hopefully, if I could uninstall them, maybe Norton 360 would be liveupdateable and scannable again.

Again, I do not believe this is just a Norton 360 problem, but a problem that may be able to push its way past other Norton products as well as maybe other companies' products.

Re: strange new installed programs

Your online game theory sounds accurate to me.  If anything was downloaded in connection with an online game associated with Playsushi, it certainly could have contained more than the user bargained for.

Re: strange new installed programs

New information about this current situation:

I chose to clear internet and browser history and cookies and restart the computer.  After restart accomplished, Norton 360 is found to again be accepting liveupdates including pulsed updates, and will permit running Quick Scans.  Whatever was stopping Norton 360 from updating and scanning now seems not to be a problem.  Just the occurrance of double-underlined hyperlinks revealing playsushi window-boxes on some words in webpages continues.

(interesting:  the "2010" and the word, "game" in your last message are double-underlined, but are not bringing up any popup link window, although they seem to point to other pages in the norton community forums.)

Re: strange new installed programs

Both items or programs now uninstalled, through Control Panel - The Weather Channel Desktop, and Playsushi.

Interesting that uninstallation process for both of them brought up webpages over the internet in order to make the uninstall process.  They were surveys about why I wanted to uninstall the items, along with further advertisements.  Being required to see webpages with the need for a survey and further advertisements is a further nuisance.   Windows should have caught this stuff earlier, and ideally, so should have the Norton product.  Adware, to be sure!

So far, other "normal" websites that I visit seem to not show any double-underlined hyperlinks to any playsushi Entertainment links windows.  Still checking...

Very good, SendOfJive

Re: strange new installed programs

Good to hear everything is getting back to normal.  The Playsushi and Weather Channel apps are probably more obnoxious than evil.  I was more concerned with whatever was blocking Norton from updating and scanning, but it looks like that was resolved.  Post back if you notice anything unusual in the next few days.  Otherwise, you are probably ok.

Re: strange new installed programs

Hello g_cafe_c

To make sure you are clean, you can always run a full scan with the free version of Malwarebytes and see if that comes up with any left overs from that Playsushi site.

Download the free version, install and update then run a FULL scan. After the scan completes you should post the logs back to this thread.

You can find Malwarebytes here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

It is a safer location to get the program from than malwarebytes themselves because some malware creators have large lists of sites that they block. Please be careful to down load the correct program ----the FREE version of MALWAREBYTES

(Thanks to Delph for providing the alternative site)

Please let us know if the log shows anything. Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit NSBU 22.17.0.183 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.
