Stuck when creating file and folder backup

Hello,

I am using Norton Ghost 15. I am having trouble with creating File and Folder Backup. Sometimes, it is stuck on the scanning stage, and then other times it is stuck during the actual backup process.

I can get it to work if I delete the old backup data, but I shouldn't have to keep doing that.

Can someone help me?

Also, as Norton Ghost had been discontinued, what is the equivalent product for home computer?

Thanks.

Re: Stuck when creating file and folder backup

Welcome,

The folder and file backup procedure has never been my choice of the way to do it.

I do the disk / partition backup and let the program do its thing - and it does it well. Set for a new full backup each month and incrementals on whatever schedule you choose - I do twice a week.

Norton / Symantec has released a desktop edition of their Symantec System Recovery package which is the replacement for Ghost. It has been updated to meet current technology and I expect it to be supported for a number of years to come.

It is necessary to buy the license but the maintenance is optional. Updates can be downloaded and installed without the maintenance contract.

Re: Stuck when creating file and folder backup

Hi

Thanks for that. I hesitate to ghost the whole machine because of the size involved, and saving the files to a NAS would take quite a long time. I have a hard drive with 1.5TB used disk space.

If I were to ghost the whole machine, what sort of compression would it offer (if the option exists)?

Re: Stuck when creating file and folder backup

Hi,

Compression is provided. How much will depend on the types of files being backed up. Program [code] files may not compress all that much, document [text] files usually compress quite well due to all of the white space in them.

I would expect SSR to be more reliable over a network than Ghost as the server version is designed for just that purpose.

If you want to consider separating things a bit so that the data that requires a backup isn't the entire 1.5TB it will go faster. That could involve adding a HDD which could then involve a second backup set so that you could backup everything but be able to do it in two batches, maybe on different days. [Thinking as I'm typing]

Re: Stuck when creating file and folder backup

I am very disappointed that Norton Ghost failed to do Files and Folder Backup successfully. This function was the reason why I bought the software in the first place.

Having deleted the backup files and the backup job, it managed to start, but stops at file 8807. It says "backing up file 88007 of 8807" so it there were only 8807 files.

Is there anyone else  who know how to solve this?

When I first started Norton products, I could email their technical support directly. Unfortunately this option is no longer available. I would love to continue using the Norton products but without their technical support I am not very keen to continue using their products anymore.

Re: Stuck when creating file and folder backup

Hi,

Ghost has reached the end of its life and has been replaced. Symantec System Recovery [SSR] is the new product. That shortcoming may have been overcome in the new product. I recommend the desktop edition without the maintenance subscription. That way there is only the one time license fee. The updates can be downloaded for free.
