Suggestion for improving Norton Security

Hi there, I want to make a suggestion which I hope Norton can implement in the near future. You see, I have just installed Norton Security and spent 30 minutes configuring my firewall rules of what apps to allow or disallow to connect to the internet.

Firstly, adding apps is tedious because every time I have to browse to the location of the app, it would be nice if Norton can remember the last location I was in of the last added app so I can easily continue adding apps from there. I also hope that we can add multiple apps together rather than doing it one by one via checkboxes.

Secondly, please give us an option to save all the Norton Security settings that we made which include exclusions, firewall rules, and the program settings. Most AV solutions these days have a settings backup like with ESET and Avast so restoring back all the settings is very simple rather than having to do this all over again in the case of a system format or a reinstallation of Norton for any reason.

I hope someone can send me suggestion to the concerned department.

Thank you

Re: Suggestion for improving Norton Security

Your first suggestion is unnecessary. As you use an app that accesses the internet, Norton automatically creates the necessary firewall rules. Hence the name Smart Firewall. Except in extreme cases, there is no need to manually create any firewall rules.

Your second suggestion has been made many times. So far only silence from Norton.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hi Ultra Male:

Further to peterweb's comments, if you have Settings | Firewall | Advanced Program Control |  Automatic Program Control enabled then the program rules automatically created at Settings | Firewall | Program Rules work well for most users.  The first time an executable attempts to access your Norton Smart Firewall it will automatically create a rule for the .exe file, which you can then modify if required. The number of automatic rules created will eventually increase over time as you start to launch the various programs on your computer that require internet access, and if an executable doesn't try to access the firewall when it runs then it doesn't require a firewall rule.  See the Norton support article Program Control for more information.

If you want Norton to start building your program rules from scratch without any custom settings go to Settings | Firewall | General Settings | Smart Firewall | Firewall Reset and click Reset.

By default any executable that is trusted by Norton will be allowed through the firewall, while executables that are not trusted will be blocked.  You can also customize rules for each executable.  For example, the firefox.exe executable for my Firefox browser is fully trusted (there are 4 green bars in the Trust column) and this executable was given unrestricted access through the firewall, but I do not want my CCleaner program sending data back to Piriform/Avast's backend servers so I've changed the default Access for ccleaner.exe from Allow to Block.  If you had an executable for an online game or some other executable that was blocked by your firewall because the .exe file was not trusted by Norton you could manually change the Access from Block to Allow, as long as you were willing to accept the risk that this file might not be safe to run on your system.

Secondly, please give us an option to save all the Norton Security settings that we made which include exclusions, firewall rules, and the program settings...

If you uninstall Norton from the Control Panel and select the option "I plan to reinstall a Norton product. Please leave my settings behind" (or use the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool in normal "Remove & Reinstall" mode) then your security history and most custom settings stored in static .txt and .dat files will be saved except your custom firewall rules.  As peterweb noted, there is a Product Suggestions board at https://community.norton.com/en/forums/product-suggestions and users have been requesting for many years now that there should be a way to export / import custom firewall rules if you need to reinstall your Norton product (see Firewall Rules Export/Export - Norton 360 and Save Settings Option for two examples) but no one at  Symantec seems to be listening.  I'm guessing they want customers to use the default program rules created by the Norton Smart Firewall, which will be automatically recreated after Norton is reinstalled.

Re: Suggestion for improving Norton Security

I understand. Thank you for the detailed reply. I hope Norton listens though to just give us a way to backup all of our program settings. You mentioned that when uninstalling Norton Security I can choose to leave my settings but that doesn't work for me as I usually format and would rather have a simple way to restore everything with a single click like Avast or ESET allows me to.

Hi Ultra Male:

I've been told that the Symantec/Norton employees regularly monitor the Product Suggestions board at https://community.norton.com/en/forums/product-suggestions, so try posting your request there. Based on my personal experience, the Norton Forum Moderators rarely jump into a thread in this Norton Security/Norton Security with Backup board or any of the other Norton product discussion boards unless they're alerted to a serious problem by one of the Norton Gurus.  See Nikhil_CV's post Norton Community Ranks and Levels if you aren't familiar with the different user ranks and badges used in this forum.

When you post your suggestion, just let Symantec know that you'd like to save all program settings (i.e., not just custom firewall rules) in a config.ini file or some other single file that could be saved on an external drive and then imported into Norton after the re-format.
