Suggestions for Spam

Hello Mods,

It could help a bit if you could, if possible,

Configure your AntiSpam mechanism to require for, the first at least 20 posts, of a new user to fill an alphanumeric code before being able to post.

I know it's not the best solution but it could help until a more solid message filtering mechanism is established.

Consider also, that I have observed that some " newbies" create and leave an account in a dormant state for a couple of days before using it for spam.

That should be a good start...

Thanks.

Re: Suggestions for Spam

Hi Apostolos,

Despite your thread is not addressed to users, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.
Honestly I do not know if this would help or not, maybe this could, but developers and Mods know much more than me.
What I can say is that raising the level of security against spammers would make life hard for new loyal users who need to sign in on the forum to ask for help and support, I think this is what Symantec would try to avoid.

I confirm what I said on another thread, Symantec is working hard for this, for sure.

Sincerely,
Sandro

Just to note: I have a collection of about 100 sleeper/dormant accounts with in about 3 week time.

@apostolos : Did you mean CAPTCHA verification?

This article was just posted on the PC Magazine site a few days ago.

Google Ditches CAPTCHA for Simple Checkbox

This new API is suppose to offer the same level of security as the CAPTCHA, but like CAPTCHAs, it's only useful if spammers are using automated bots and scripts.

Re: Suggestions for Spam

The the problem with CAPTCHA verification is if the spammer is human, which ours seem to be, they -- unlike spam bots -- can easily type in the CAPTCHA and submit their posts as legitimate.

Re: Suggestions for Spam

Hi Kevin,
But that would slow down the user a bit like that of a roadblock.
It seems the spammer opens multiple tabs for composing message at same time...
Will you guys be able to implement some cookie or script to detect that type and prevent a user from opening multiple post compose pages and or creating more than 2 threads within an hour? That will surely make him fed up....
Anyway not flood (DDOS in dave's view) like it happened...
Is it correct that the new platform lacks a lot of plugins ?
[edit] : expect a whole lot of instructions including this soon. I dedicated 2 weekends over it.

That was my point, I agree with Nikhil_CV.

Re: Suggestions for Spam

A couple of possibilities (that can be used together)...

Level-1) How about a Newbie posting limit-counter (say a 3 to 5 post limit) followed by forced logoff (legit users always welcome to immediately log back in, of course).

Level-2) Two factor login (ala MS account verification - emitted access auth-code via txt or alt-email, etc.) - could be limited to only Newbie accounts (but not a bad idea to enforce on all accounts, perhaps monthly - could also entail enforced PW changing)?

Please - Don't throw any rocks!

Cheers!

John

I wasn't suggesting that this spam was an DDoS attack on Norton Community.

Re: Suggestions for Spam

Another good measure would be configuring the system so "Newbies" CAN start NO more than 1 threads or 2 per day.

That way spammers would post only 1 spam or 2 threads before they get deleted.

Let me know what you think, mods & users.

F4E, the eastern face/ball you're raising is 100% gold? Price?

I was wondering if these spammers are recyclable, we could get a less polluted future for our children
