Suggestions for VPN products

Norton 360 versions that include VPN and Family.  It's confusing that Norton Secure VPN exists to be installed while the Norton Security and Norton Family have VPN.  How do they all work together?  Why not a single VPN item that handles everything per product (norton 360 is norton 360),  If you try to install Norton Secure VPN stand alone it would say already installed because it's part of norton 360.  Anyway, it's very confusing.

Also, fortnite wouldn't work when VPN enabled on the iPad.  Which it is by default.   I would suggest the following.  Have zones, so if you're a local / trusted zone the VPN isn't used.  Connecting to other public networks then VPN kicks in automatically.   As far as kid tracking, if you have to a vpn model, just have it local for tracking and not actually secure vpn (maybe that's already what it does).  It should also ensure the family item is selected (and shouldn't complain about web-proxies of surfeasy.com because that is your own product using it).   Basically it all needs better integration, testing, and configurations to not conflict with games.

There can be some confusion with the iOS products. Do you have the Norton Secure VPN installed separately on the iPad? Or are you referring to the 'VPN' indication you get with the Norton Security for iOS? If Norton Security for iOS, that does not have an actual VPN that masks your location. It is just an on device VPN using the iOS VPN api's to provide the Web protection features. If you are just using Norton Security for iOS, try disabling the Web Protection feature, then restart the NS app, then turn the feature back on again. Then test.

If using the standalone Norton Secure VPN, have you checked with the fortnite developers to see if their game works with a VPN? Some web sites block the use of VPN's, so it could be the same with games. After all, a VPN is going to affect your connection speed, and games need the max speed you can muster.

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

Yeah, it doesn't work well together.   So I log in to my.norton.com and have device problems, because all the norton family installs on the ipad/iphone end up as its own item.  The ones that had like "joe's iphone" end up "joes iphone" but even those like "sallys iphone" ends up have two entries with the same name.  When you look, one says family installed but doesn't have norton security, the other is green and says it has norton security but you can add family.   I just know if I don't disable "web protection", fortnite would disconnect in middle of battles.  I think family and security vpn may have been fighting for control or something.  I don't have the secure vpn now because support was telling me that it was the same as norton secure vpn but that secure vpn just had more features.    Maybe because the problem was it wouldn't activate secure vpn because it couldn't add the connection on the ipad (it did on another one).  Too much work, just have one vpn, zones to auto determine what to use and just get them all to get along.

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

Again, if you are talking only about iOS devices, both Norton Security and the Family apps only use an on device VPN. It is not an actual VPN. It just allows Norton to provide the online services for each app. For NS, it allows Norton to check web sites for safety, and for Family it allows Norton to be able to filter web sites. Due to limitations in how apps can work on iOS, this is the way Norton has to to provide these services.

There have been connection issues with both these on device VPNs. Just be sure you have run updated both apps to ensure you have the latest versions. There were some fixes made for these connection issues.

Yeah, on the iOS it's confusing.   If I turn on Web protection in security product then Family complains that it doesn't have control.

How do you update?  I just installed off the apple store.

Use the App Store app on your device to check for updates.

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

Okay to sum this up.   Install Norton Security, Disable Web Protection, Install Norton Family, Install Norton Secure VPN.   To use the Norton Secure VPN with Norton Family, enable "web proxies" on the kids account under "web" inside Norton family.   When away from the home, they enable Secure VPN, when home they can turn it off.

Does that sound about right?

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

The Norton Secure VPN app is in no way connected with Norton Security or Norton Family.  If you want more help understanding the Norton Family app, you should post in the Norton Family forum board here

When away from the home, they enable Secure VPN, when home they can turn it off.

Assuming your home network is fully secured, this statement is correct.

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

Okay, and the Norton Family VPN has the protections that Norton Web Protection VPN has plus the additional features?

Re: Suggestions for VPN products

You will have to post that question in the Norton Family forum board that I linked to above.

AFAIK the two apps use this on device VPN for different features. The Web Protection in Norton Security is like the Safe Web feature on PCs, where web sites are checked against known malicious sites. In Family, the on device VPN is used for the web filtering to block the category of web sites the parent chooses to block.
