Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

I am currently running Norton Internet Security on 3 Windwos 7 pc's and the subscription expires in c 30 days. I have purchased a product key for the Deluxe Version of Norton Security (5 devices) and would appreciate step by step guidance on how to make the transition easy and problem free. When extending my subscription in the past for Norton Internet Security I have just needed to enter my product key but presumably as i am moving to a new Norton Product I will need to uninstall Norton Internet Security and dwonload and activate Norton Security via my account.

Does the downloading and installation process for Norton Security automatically uninstall my existing Norton Internet Security or do I have to does the ininstall - and if so, how?

Advice greatly appreciated and this is not addressed by the information that came with the product key for Norton Security.....

Hello Mark Haffenden

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

1. Backup your Identity Safe in .dat and CSV formats to a safe place just in case you need it.

2.Norton Security can be installed on top of NIS if you are not having any problems with NIS

3.Please follow the instructions in this KB

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Mark

I have purchased a product key for the Deluxe Version of Norton Security (5 devices) ....

If you mean that literally -- that you have bought a KEY on its own from someone and not a retail box that these days contains only a KEY on a piece of cardboard and no installation media -- then my understanding is that Norton does not permit that and the KEY may not work at all, may be used or otherwise not valid.

Otherwise just follow floplot's guidance .....

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

hi Hugh

Apparently with NS/NSwB not only do Norton do not issue a disc there is no Norton "box" but just a card with a scratch off section for the new Key number. It is in two sections which can be separated one being the size of a Credit Card and the other slightly bigger. This is what I received from PC World, I was a little surprised until I read here that there is no longer a disc to install.

Thanks Michael

That may reflect that PC World and certain other stores, especially in the UK, have a special arrangement with Norton partly to reduce shoplifting so that that key is not functional until they scan it at checkout.

Here in the US I still see boxes in stores like Staples which is my nearest.

hi Hugh

I'll have to look in Staples here in the UK when I next go into town, there is a black stripe like on a credit card, I bought it through their website so I didn't see what they did but I guess they must have done as you say with scanning at the checkout.

I bought a Retail Pack from Amazon, Norton Packaging but just with Product key on sticker inside when you open it up. I should have been more explicit in my post re source of product key. Hopefully Norton packs supplied by Amazon UK are genuine and will work....

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Michael,

Buying on line here, eg from Amazon and some other sources, you do only get an email with the KEY and/or it's in the invoice and instructions on how to download so yours is the equivalent of that I guess, and the postage would be less.

hi Mark

I've bought "direct" from Amazon on several occasions without problem although, once I had a problem with some software from one of the sellers on there even with 99% positive feedback.

Hello

The Norton Programs bought through Amazon US I know are good. I am sure that the same product bought through Amazon UK should be just as secure.

Please do come back after you have installed it and let us know how you made out.

I forgot in my directions to you that after you install and activate your Norton Security, you can have a chat with Customer Support and have any remaining days left on your NIS subscription added onto your Norton Subscription.

.Please contact the free chat program by using this link.

Thanks for clarifying -- should be no problems with Amazon and with the download link you can use on their website it actually connects to Norton Servers so you are not getting an Amazon copy but the genuine Norton article.

I'm sure the same is true for Amazon UK. But at one time we used to get regular complaints about eBay or other purchases that turned out to be already registered to someone else or wholly or partly used. I haven't seen them for a while so maybe people are learning .....

Enjoy your new purchase. What version of Windows are you planning to use it on at first?

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hugh, planning on staying with Windows 7 for the foreseeable future; at least until one of existing PC's bites the dust - "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". Have experienced lack of driver support for existing scanners/printers in the past when changing operating system and had to buy new ones. Not planning on falling for that one again with Windows 10 and not installing their "upgrade" patches! Mark

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Mark,

I don't see any reason to change from 7 on existing computers unless they have touchscreens or some special requirements!

The problems with 7 & 10 on small touchscreens is hitting the "actuator", like the Full Screen icon on IE; I haven't tried the Edge version to see if it has a better way since things like double tap don't seem to work on my hybrid in tablet form and I hate touchpad compared with mice.

It may be partly that my cheap stylus is less effective than needed.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

What if you do NOT have a Retail Box, with install cds? You try to download Norton Security, but are told that you have NO licenses open to download. The ONLY way to get the Norton Security Standard (or any version) would be to FIRST REMOVE your current license, which would make your Current Norton Internet Security INACTIVE (???). REMOVE option says that you could cause your current running software to NOT WORK ANYMORE!!  THEN you would be able to download the NEW software and install it. Have Read MANY things here, saying that you should be able to have Norton Security Uninstall AND Replace Internet Security, while Internet Security is STILL installed and Active.

I have NO devices to remove, to get myself a license opening. Internet Security is installed on the ONLY license I have. I do NOT want to Uninstall Internet Security FIRST (and have my pc vulnerable for that time), Then download Norton Security, THEN have that install.

I am NOT having any problems (currently) with Norton Internet Security. I read the reply to Mark Haffenden, with the link.

I currently have a link to a Norton Security STANDARD offer, to replace my Internet Security. If I went and PURCHASED the upgrade to Norton Security DELUXE, would THAT give me the ability to Download FIRST, and have the Install do the Replacement, or would I have the Same problem??

How much longer do I have with Internet Security, before it is Discontinued???

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hello markdr

The Norton Security Standard is only good for 1 device. If you have more than 1 device to put Norton Security on, then you need the Deluxe version which is good for up to 5 devices including pc, mac, tablets, iphones, androids. If you need the Backup part or have more than 5 devices, you could get the Premium version. Don't get confused with the 2 different programs Norton Security and Norton Internet Security.

If you get the Standard version and try to download it on 2 devices, then you would be told you have no more licenses allowed. You have no more seats on a 1 device license.

You can install Norton Security on top of Norton Internet Security without having to first uninstalling NIS. Even if you had to uninstall it first, then Windows Firewall and Microsoft Antivirus program would kick on until you got Norton Security installed.

You can also use a Premium key to activate your NIS program if you don't want to upgrade to Norton Security. But I would recommend to upgrade because it has a better engine even though NIS was brought up to 22.6.0.142 like NS also.

We don't know how much longer NIS will be supported, but at the current time you can only renew NIS thru Norton. You can not buy a new version of it any more.

Thanks.

NS is available by download only and shop around for best prices.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

markdr

You try to download Norton Security, but are told that you have NO licenses open to download.

So far as I know you can always download and install a trial version of a Norton product which will run without activation for long enough for you to activate it. I don't think that having another Norton product installed blocks this.

If I went and PURCHASED the upgrade to Norton Security DELUXE, would THAT give me the ability to Download FIRST, and have the Install do the Replacement, or would I have the Same problem??

You can buy that as an upgrade to whatever Norton you have installed and activated but if you buy it from a third party reputable source like the major computer/office equipment stores or from on-line sources like Amazon you can usually save a lot of money and if you buy the Download Version you will get a key by email if you buy online and you can then download onto your computer and let it replace what you have.

In fact if you buy a box in a store you don't get disks any more but inside the box is a piece of card with the key on it! Again you can download from Norton and someone here will be happy to give you the URL to the version that you buy so you can get the most uptodate version available for download at that time -- this reduces the amount of updating after installation.

From the information I have, which we all got from you know who, it seems that the NS Deluxe Key will activate NIS & NAV; Windows and Mac versions; it's N360 one needs Premium for ..... (unless you are in ANZ ...)

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

I am trying to Download Norton Security to my ONE SEAT on my computer. Won't let me download, because the Seat is already full with a program it is supposed to replace. So can NOT download it to replace one license with the other. If I REMOVE the license, through MANAGE, and Internet Security STOPS WORKING, will I THEN be able to download Norton Security and have it Uninstall Internet Security. How long could this process take? In other words, for how long would I NOT have ANY Norton protection working?

The Download button for Norton Security should SEE that I have a Licensed Internet Security (which STILL shows in Norton Manage), AND that I have put thru, for the offer to replace it with Norton Security (Standard); which shows me with a Product Key in Norton Manage, for Norton Security... AND it should LET ME download Norton Security and INSTALL IT (replacing Internet Security). When I went from Older versions of Norton Ant-Virus, to Internet Security, I was able to GET the NEW version to my pc, whether by Cd or Download, and Install it. The Install saw the other Norton software, it was going to replace, and asked me for my Product Key and removed the old software, and installed itself.

If I upgraded to the Deluxe version, which I probably would, that might be the "fix", because it could NOT SAY that I didn't have any "seats" available for download (???).  But, I am hesitant to Upgrade something that is ALREADY giving me a Problem, BEFORE it is even running....

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

After I went to check on the Offer for Norton Security Standard, an entry was made to my Norton Manage, showing a Norton Security Standard PRODUCT KEY. So, technically, I do NOT need a Trial Version. I ALREADY have a Product Key for a FULL BLOWN version, that I can NOT GET, because I still have the Older software (Internet Security) installed. I AM BEING BLOCKED from downloading the program. I am NOT being Offered a Trial-version.

Technically, I ALREADY OWN a copy of Norton Security Standard, but, the system will NOT let me GET IT, because I Still have an older program installed.

If I got the Deluxe version, with 5 licenses, I would probably be able to download it, then it would replace Internet Security, and remove that old license. I think that the upgrade price I saw, was about $14.

What would the price difference for Auto-renewal be, from Internet Security to Norton Security (Standard/Deluxe)?

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

If you are installing Norton Security over Norton Internet Security they are two different programs. What you should do is download the Norton Security installation file from   www.norton.com/latestns

Just run that installer and it will take care of uninstalling your NIS and installing the newer Norton Security. Then when you log into your Norton Account to activate your Norton Security you will not have the message about no seats left. You will enter your new NS product key and be good to go.

If you still had time left on your old NIS subscription, contact Norton Support via chat after installing NS and ask them to transfer the remaining time to your new subscription.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hello markdr

If you have a key to use for Norton Security, you can use this link to get Norton Security. I will give you 2 links. One is for the Premium which has the Backup with it. Use the correct link and all you have to do is put in the key.

www.norton.com/latestns     or    www.norton.com/latestnsbu

I think your mistake is that you are using the DOWNLOAD button in the Manage program. That contains the same program that you have now. That won't have Norton Security in it until you activate NS for the first time.  If you had the 1 device version of NIS and used the DOWNLOAD button, then you are trying to download another copy of NIS and you don't have room for that. It does get confusing with the similarities in the names. Norton Internet Security vs. Norton Security.

Hello

Auto-renewal prices are always much higher than what you can find in stores and online. When you buy from the Norton Store, you are paying a convenience price which also. We always recommend users to turn off auto-renewal and to remove the credit card information.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Just went to www.norton.com/latestns, and it was downloading a 138mb file. Is that the Standard or Deluxe version????

I had also downloaded a file that Huwyngr had suggested. I found a page to download a Trial-version of Norton Security Deluxe.

So, if I make sure to have the Norton Security Standard Product Key and Serial Number ready, I should be able to use the 138mb file to replace my Internet Security now. Then, I can Upgrade it to the Deluxe version. Then, I can have it also, on my phone and android. And still have 2 more licenses.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hmm.. I guess I always thought it was the other way around.. Since I am "loyal" enough to auto-renew Directly, that I was getting a DISCOUNTED PRICE.

How do I auto-renew my Yearly subscription thru a store, or another location besides norton.com???

Kudos0

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Even MORE confusing, since the DOWNLOAD button (in Norton Manage)has Next to it "Norton Security Standard", with the product key and serial number... While on Another screen, it shows my Internet Security Product Key and Serial number, with an Icon to Remove the license.

Kudos0

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Just checked something... The Product Code and Serial Numbers that I am seeing on Norton Manage......... are the SAME!

Where it has Norton Internet Security AND where it has Norton Security Standard are THE SAME numbers/characters! Checked my Norton Internet Security version info. SAME Numbers. Version number 22.6.0.142.

Trying to remember if I tried putting in the Product Key from the Norton Security in "Use a different key", thinking that might solve something and let me Download.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hello mark

NIS would be version 22.6.0.142 and NS would also be version 22.6.0.142.

If you have already bought a key for the Norton Security Standard program, why don't you have a chat with customer support and they can install NS for you over NIS Standard.

It really sounds more complicated than it is. Use my 1 of my links and download it, enter the new key and see what happens. If you have auto renewal turned on, you might already have the new program Check Help>Subscription Status and see how many days you have left.

I think your best bet is to have a chat with customer support. You can get them by using this link and tell them what you want to do. They can access your computer if necessary and do it for you.

www.norton.com/chat  They will know which program you have installed now. and which is the new key. The program is made to install over the top of the old program so you don't have to uninstall the old one.

Btw, do you have a free version from your ISP or from Staples at a discount? If you have the program from your ISP, then it works differently.

Thanks.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

I got Norton Security Up And Running!

I had the file that I got from Latest/Ns. I installed it. It removed my Norton Internet Security and left me with Norton Security Standard. ALL was running.. Now...... How do I get to be able to get the TWO OTHER licenses I need to get my tablet and smartphone on?? Where can I find an UPGRADE TO the Deluxe version?? I had seen something for about $11 for the 144 days I have left on my current subscription. It said for Norton Security with Backup. Did NOT say Deluxe or Premium. Turns out, it is Premium. Going thru an ONLINE chat with Norton rep, there IS NO upgrade path to the DELUXE version. At one point, I was being told that the PROMOTION price for Deluxe or Premium was what I was going to get ($39 or $49). Rep was asking if they could get a remote to my computer to see the $11 for Norton Security with Backup. I told the rep that I ALREADY HAD a Product Key for Norton Security Standard, with the Original "Promotional" offer to switch to Norton Security Standard. I was asking why, if I ONLY need (at least for NOW) 3 licenses, was I being moved to get TEN?? I quit the Online Chat, and did the $11. The original Internet Security to Norton Security took a little over an HOUR to finish (remove Internet Security, then Install Norton Security). With the Upgrade to Premium, after coming back (after about TWO HOURS) to my computer, to see if things had Finished, and seeing that it seemed to be in LIMBO.....  There were NO ERROR messages...  Nothing seemed to be "stuck".. The "Installing" bar was STILL moving around.... I RE-BOOTED, and came back with the message that Norton Security would NOW Finish its install. It DID!!  Everything seemed ok. Except for the Name and that I have a 25g online backup option, it does NOT LOOK different. I have the Norton Security Premium. Norton Mobile on tablet and smartphone. SEVEN LICENSES LEFT. Hmmm... What is my BUDGET?? Can I purchase SEVEN MORE devices????

What will my Subscription Renewal price be, in about 140 days????

It WORKED, but, some procedures STILL NEED FIXING.

1) MORE specific on just WHAT is being sold. It should NOT say "Norton Security with Backup". It should say "Norton Security Premium", and THEN the details should mention the Backup, as one of the things you are getting.

2) If Norton Security Deluxe is THERE, it should be an OPTION when going for the original Internet Security to Norton Security Promotion (along with Standard and Deluxe). It should be an OPTION when upgrading from Standard.

3) Let the Norton/Symantec Reps (chat and/or phone) KNOW about these other options! They should be Able to find an Internet Security to Norton Security Promotion, and find info on it.

4) Even though it WORKED, still wondering about the Install LIMBO, where it should have been telling me to Re-Boot to Continue, instead of it just "twiddling" its Install Progress Bar. There was NO Percentage done hint. Just a "smudge" moving from side to side. No other hint that something was Actually going on (Just "Removing other Norton product....", "Installing....". Until I see the Norton icon disappear and the "You have NO FIREWALL running" messages come up, then the Norton icon comes back later.

Haven't used enough, to be able to tell whether Anything is Faster, Slower, or Same yet.

Re: Switching to Norton Security from Norton Internet Security

Hello

Congrats on getting Norton Security installed ok. How many days does it show on the front of the program? If you still had days left on your old subscription , then call up customer support and ask to have them installed on your current subscription. When this subscription is up, then you will buy another box or download of the program and most likely just put in the new key. We will have to wait and see what happens with the program by then to see if you will have to download a new program again or not.

Thanks.
