symtdi.sys - error 1075 for DHCP service

I have AV 2003 on a Win XP SP1 PC that suddenly stopped connecting

to the internet through my DHCP service.  The DHCP shows an error

1075 event in the logs due to SYMTDI.

Microsoft has a fix for this issue here :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915162

I have seen several online references to the problem being related

to uninstalling Norton Av which leaves reference to SYMTDI in the

registry thereby causing DHCP service to fail.  But I have not removed

my Norton AV 2003 and I still have the Symtdi.sys file in Windows.

So, I am wondering if I apply the fix to the registry as MS suggests,

well it matter that NAV is still on my PC?  I was cleaning up my hard

drive of a lot of trash files before this happened, but I deleted none that I knew

belonged to NAV.

Hi Herbill

Welcome to the Norton Forum

Your computer seems to be way behind in the times. Your xp only has sp 1.Windows has stopped support for xp with only sp 1 installed. Your NAV is like 7 years old. With the lack of attention to that computer and with you playing around deleting files, anything could have happened to that computer. You may have all sorts of malware.

Re: symtdi.sys - error 1075 for DHCP service

I installed another AV program after NAV expired, and I have a good firewall, etc, so I

am not concerned about malware.   I was going to get rid of NAV anyway, so maybe

I should just uninstall it and see what happens.

Hi Herbill

If you have 2 antivirus programs installed, that isn't a good idea. Even if NAV 2003 doesn't work any more, but is still installed, I'm sure that it caused what ever antivirus program you are currently running to have a faulty installation and it must be causing problems for your current antivirus program. Could you please tell us exactly what security programs you have installed now including the years and versions please?
