SymUIAgent.app issue. Keep getting: You don't have persmission to use the app "SymUIAgent.app"

Hi - I recently installed Norton AV, Confidential and Firewall (via Comcast) on my Mac (running Snow Leopard).

I have a second account on the mac that is set up to use the mac parental controls.  Often when I log into this account, I get the message: You don't have persmission to use the app "SymUIAgent.app".  I choose "Allow Always" and provide the admin id and password.  It always asks for this twice, then goes away for a few weeks then starts the cycle gain.

I checked the forums which address this for users that installed Norton Site Minder.  I don't use Norton Site Minder.

Can anyone tell me how to stop these annoying popups?

Thanks.

Make sure that SymUIAgent is signed. Mac OS X Parental Controls uses codesigning to keep track of applications. The default installation for SymUIAgent is definitely signed, since all our applications are codesigned. However perhaps your installation became corrupted. In the Terminal application (Applications folder -> Utilities), copy and paste the following command:

codesign -vv /Library/Application\ Support/Symantec/SymUIAgent/SymUIAgent.app

(and press return if necessary). It should print out something like:

/Library/Application Support/Symantec/SymUIAgent/SymUIAgent.app: valid on disk /Library/Application Support/Symantec/SymUIAgent/SymUIAgent.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement /Library/Application Support/Symantec/SymUIAgent/SymUIAgent.app: valid on disk

If it doesn't then your installation make have become corrupted.

I have the same problem on my parental control account for my son (Naveen).  I ran the code you suggested and it confirmed that the application was valid on disk and satisfied its requirement on my admin account.  I also uninstalled and re-installed the application on my admin account.  Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Re: SymUIAgent.app issue. Keep getting: You don't have persmission to use the app "SymUIAgent.app"

I think I may have a potential solution--the program needs to be enabled in the parental controlled accounts approved application list as follows:

1. Go to Apple-> System Preferences ->Accounts

2. Unlock the accounts (click the lock on the bottom left)

3. Open the account that has parental controls

4. Click "Open Parental Controls"

5. You probably have a check box in  "Use only selected applications"

6. Scroll down in that "selected applications" list to "Other"

7. Click on the triangle to open that list

8.  Look for "symuiagent" and place a check box there--this will allow the application to work on your parental controlled account.  You probably should place a checkbox at the other Norton applications also.

Hope this works
