SystemWorks disables critical updates?

I was looking at some of the options under Norton SystemWorks General tab and it shows the option is checked for "Disable Critical Update Notification and system-wide Automatic LiveUpdate".

Why would the program default to this option?  Wouldn't you want to keep the updates up to date?

Re: SystemWorks disables critical updates?

I'm the product manager for this, so I should know, but don't totally remember. I want to say that it was a fallback in case the notification mechanism in NSW conflicted with updates to messaging service in our other products, since we'd used a slightly different version for NSW (and were worried about future conflicts). I'd have to go back to the engineering team to confirm this though.

As you've suggested though, if you're not seeing any problems, I wouldn't disable it.

Re: SystemWorks disables critical updates?

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, about the NSW Automatic Update Program.  I wasn't asking about clicking on the "Disable Critical Update Notification and system-wide Automatic LiveUpdate" option box, it was disabled when I installed NSW program.  Since the Automatic Update program comes installed disabled, how does the program get any needed updates?  Does the NIS 2009 update program collect and install new NSW updates?  Since I installed the NSW program, I have clicked on the check for updates button several times, but so far no updates have been found.

  Thanks for your reply..

Re: SystemWorks disables critical updates?

NIS 2009 and NSW use different LiveUpdate architectures.  That setting in NSW will not impact the settings for LiveUpdate in NIS 2009.  NIS 2009 will also not check or install updates for NSW.  The only updates that NSW will look for are for it's individual components.  So far, I don't know of any updates for NSW 2009.  Typically, where you will receive frequent updates is with respect to what we sometimes call "content updates."  "Content Updates" refer to items such as virus definitions, antiphishing definitions, antispam rules, etc.  NSW Basic does not have any of these items.

To Robert's point, the reason was likely due to any planned updates for NSW Basic.  NSW Basic and it's components (the individual utilities, cleanup, system optimizer, performance test, etc) are very mature.  The likelihood of a needed update for these components is not likely.

Updates are really created for the following reasons:

Content item related to a security feature  - not in NSW, but you have NIS updating it's components seperately

Updates to address a problem that can be addressed in the product

Re: SystemWorks disables critical updates?

Thank you both for your replys.  The update was defaulted to "do not LiveUpdate", because no updates have been needed.  Makes sense..  Thanks again.
