time on computer

Is there anyway that you can limit the time on the internet versus the time spent on the computer?  My son uses his computer at school and for homework.  What I need is to limit his internet usage not necessarily his computer usage.

Re: time on computer

This is a big need.  It's the abuse of internet time that needs to be contrained while allowing plenty of time to write essays or whatever.  Perhaps "allowed programs" which can be exempt from the restrictions.  Word processing, for instance, but not offline games.

Re: time on computer

I think what is being called for here is more control over total computer usage rather than just internet usage. This seems beyond the current goals of Online Family but I support the request for these additional features because to ignore offline usage is to ignore a large part of the picture of what our children are doing. Paradoxically the increased control of online activity offered by Online Family can cause increased offline inappropriate use. Recently I used Online Family to block youtube for a week because one of my children was "addictively" watching TV series instead of doing homework. I discovered later this just drove her to playing a lot of computer games. It would be nice to be able to monitor all behaviour.

By the way, that is the first time I used Online Family to actually block rather than just monitor activity, its presence is usually enough to keep the kids on the straight and narrow. This ties in fully with the Online Family philosophy of open rather than secretive monitoring and it usually works.

So what is the status of this?  What I need is to do limit the childrens internet access not necessarily their computer usage.
