Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

I have set up NF on my daughter's laptop.  She is limited to x hours per day and then the laptop is supposed to be locked.  According to other threads and your documentation, she should be able to log in a couple more times, for one minute each.  But after the 3rd time, the laptop should lock.  This is not happening.  She is still able to use the laptop in one minute increments after the daily maximum is reached.  So the limits are basically useless.

Given the number of other threads on this subject, please advise on how the solution to this flaw.

please make sure the child has a standard user account

also plesae make sure the child's account has a password

after the 3rd time the computer should not allow the user to continue with 1 min

can you tell us what version of OS are you using?

She is set up as a standard user with a password.  The laptop is running Windows7 - home premium. Service pack 1.

What settings do you have for time limits?

Can you check out my other post where I have a screen shot of my time settings which work properly for me.

The settings are virtually the same.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Ok good. That seems to be correct. Also be certain "Time Supervision" is turned on, which I think it has to be to see the screen shot that you took.

And finally when you log into your childs machine, can you select "view time remaining"?

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Yes I can see the time remaining.  I did remove the 1/2 hour selection just to be 100% sure.  It is not that the system to does not alert her that the time is remaining. Just that it does not enforce it.

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

How are you determining that it is not enforcing the time? Try setting the time block to right now. See what happens when you try and log in.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

I know it is not locking the computer by two things:  one - she continues to use the computer after the daily limit.   She is set to 6 hours on the weekends and used 10 hours Saturday.  4 on weekdays and used over 6 hours Wed, Thursday and Friday.

two - we can look at the alert log and there are a boat load of "logged in during block period" all one minute apart.  there are usually 60+ of those alerts.  I have cleared them out of today, but will screen shot them later.

She should run out of time in about 3 hours from now.  Will try to get it from her before it expires to see it first hand.

Hi waholmes1967,

I’ve heard some children login again & again (after the exact 6 minutes) using the few seconds right before the program logs them out.  One thing you can try is to create a complex password for the child’s Windows account, so when the child logs back onto the PC diligently each time, it would create more work for the child to do it every few seconds.

Thanks

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

thanks.  I have seen that in other post but fail to see how this is a viable solution and why it continues to be suggested.  She has a password on her account and just because it is complex does not solve the issue.  All a complex password does is make her type more a bit more.  If all it takes to get around the time limit is to log out and then log back in would suggest an error in the program itself.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

To be clear this is not working as we expect. I have seen and done exactly this test and after 3 attempts, you no longer get a 1 minute countdown.

So Katie is trying to suggest things to help you with your situation as there is clearly something different with the way your computer is bahaving and the way it's supposed to work.

Also we are probably confusing 2 different time settings here.

Are you talking about time usage or time curfew? Curfew is the exact time you allow your child to be on the system where as usage is well the use of the computer.

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

the issue we have is with the daily time limits not the curfew hours.

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Ok so we are talking about time limits. There are 2 modes for time limits, one is logged in time and the other is activity time. I believe you are using activity time and once at the maximum it locks them out, however they try and log back in and get an extra 1 minute. This was to allow children to save any unsaved work. We allow a maxium of 3 times and then they should be locked immediately.

If you can reproduce this behavior, Katie can work with you on your system to see what may be different. It could be other conflicting software or something we have not seen in our testing labs.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

ok. she has 2.5 hours left today and will  update then.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Here is my first hand experience with this issue.  The system properly alerted me that I was approaching the daily time limit.  I was prompted with the 60 second count down after which it went to the user log in screen.  So I simply logged back in and got another minute.  Did this 3 times.  At the end of the third time, it prompted me to ask for more time. Just x'd out of that and it went back to the log in screen..  Just logged right back in and ....  Went through this cycle 3 more times...giving an extra 9-10 mintues.  So then just tried restarting and it went right back to the 60 second count down.  The patter in the same.  3 - 60 second count downs and NF takes them back to the user log in.  Just log in, log off, and log back in.  VOILA.  More time.  My expectation is that at some point, they should not be able to log back in.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Can we make sure we are using the same terms for the same things.

Log out vs. lock screen are different.

Log out means all applications close and the user session has ended.

Lock screen it suspends the user session but it is still there, all applications are still running, however you are back at the login screen.

When you get to the third time are you "logging out" or just "switching user / lock screen"?

Also what does "restarting" mean, did you reboot your system?

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Steps using your terminology

1.  prior to reaching time limit received warning and  60 second count down

2.  Reached time limit and NF returned to locked screen

3.  Unlocked to Windows and received 60 warning and count down

4.  Reached time limit and NF returned to locked screen

5.  Unlocked to Windows and received 60 warning and count down

6.  Reached time limit and NF returned to locked screen

7.  Unlocked to Windows and received prompt to request for more time

8.  Closed request (x'd out) and NF returned to lock screen

9.  Unlocked to Windows

10. Log out as user and returned to log in (which is the same as the locked screen)

10. Logged back in as user

11.  Upon logging in received 60 second count down.

12.  Repeat steps 4- 11....did this for 3 cycles.

13.  At the end of the third cycle, simply rebooted the system to see if lockout would enforce.

14.  Logged back in as user

15.  Repeat steps 3-11.

At no time throught this process was I unable to log in as a user who has reached the daily time limit...was never locked out. And none of the steps were out of the ordinary just gaming a loop hole.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

between steps 9 and 10, 10, did you get a 60 second warning screen, what did you do?

Kudos0

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Ignore my previous response, i just did your steps and you have uncovered a hole that we did not see.

Basically the 3 count is stored in the "user session" that is when you are logged in, so if you log out, that counter starts all over again. And a reboot does the same. The team is looking into how to close that gap.

Thanks for the inquiry.   Can you please let us know what version of Norton Family you have on the monitored PC?  Are you still experiencing the time issue as described here?  If you are, we will certainly check into the issue.  To find  the Norton Family version, please click the Norton Family icon in the system tray and select “About Norton Family”.

Quite saddened by this reply since presumably the bug in your software was never fixed.  I was using Norton Family Premier.  But it would not enforce the time limits we set as promised in your marketing materials.  We reported this last August.  Because there was no fix and our time limits were completely ignored, we stopped using it.  As you can see from the string, it was identified as a bug in your software.  I was simply checking to see if that bug was corrected as I never received notice that it had been.  I want to you use your product but until is operates as described I cannot.

Hi waholmes1967,

This issue was corrected in  Norton Family version 3.2.1.17.  The latest version of Norton Family is 3.2.1.20, so please download the latest version from Norton Family website.  You shouldn't experience the issue anymore.

In these versions,  the 60 seconds alert window would be displayed thrice a day and then Extend time dialog box would be displayed regardless of machine logoff/restart/shutdown.  Please let us know if it is how it works on the monitored PC and how you feel about this.

This is still it working. When the time limit is reached, the child can simply continue to use the computer minute by minute. We even have days set to 0 time allowed and it does not prohibit usage. Assume that Norton family is only kicking in once a windows session is initiated, not before.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

The steps are different as the flow has changed.  We have blocked all time - for testing purposes. So they log into their windows account and Norton notifies that they are out of time and they are logged off in 60 seconds. It does and all they have to do is log back into their windows account and they get another 60 secs.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Hi waholmes1967,

Thanks for the update.  The program shows 60 seconds alert window thrice a day irrespective of completion of daily allowance or during curfew hours.  For rest of the day, it will directly display Extend time dialog.

If a user makes soft restriction, then Restriction alert box alone get displayed.   It won’t display any 60 seconds or extend time window.

Is it how the program works on the PC?  I assume you are still referring to the PC you mentioned in your previous post Windows7 - home premium. Service pack 1.  Please let us know what version of Norton Family you have on the PC now.

Also, how many 60 seconds warning messages you get with your current test?

Thanks

Katie

We are having the same problem.

I have my Son's computer set for only a few hours in the morning.
That way he has to get off and do his chores.
And yet somehow he is able to stay on his computer all day.

Windows 7 Ultimate.
He is a standard user.

Thank you

HI MichaelJP,

1.      Do you see a pop-up message at lower right hand corner saying you are being monitored after you log onto your PC as the child?

2.      If you log onto the PC as the monitored child and try to access a forbidden website, do you get blocked?

Thanks

Katie

Version is 3.2.1.28

And I'm not home to check on this, thats why I have the software installed.
And he is a standard user account on Windows 7

But he somehow can stay online with our your software knowing.
Is there a way to update house rules through the command line?

That way I can create a script to update whenever hes online.

Re: Time Limit Blocking Not Working - Alowing Child to Continue Using the PC after limit is reached

Hi MichaelJP,

You can update house rules online after you log onto your Norton Family account at https://family.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs

After you log onto your NF account, can you also please check if you see any web activities and any forbidden websites get blocked (these tell me if the program is still installed and configured correctly for your Norton Family account).

What I’ve heard is some children login again & again using the few seconds right before the program logs them out.  One thing you can try is to add a complicated password for the child’s Windows account, so when the child logs back onto the PC diligently each time, it would create more work for the child to do it every few seconds.

Thanks

His password is over 15 characters long.
Its not that

I connected in to his computer and saw the NF icon in the lower right, and there was about 15 of them.
When I put my cursor on it, they ALL went away.

The program has been working fine except for bugs in the software.

I'm a System Administrator with over 20 years in IT.

I was hoping to avoid having to reinstall, again.

That was one of the answers when NF wasn't loading in under Chrome.
And it wasn't the install or Chrome.

But I'll try it.

Thanks for the input.  You mentioned there are 15 of the Norton Family icons in the system tray.  This is definitely not normal. That's why we have to try to reinstall Norton Family.

You also said "NF wasn't loading in under Chrome".  Norton Family supports Chrome.  Are you still experiencing the issue?

He said he found how to to this from a google search.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the screen shot.  It shows the child has to log onto the PC every 10 - 20 mins.  That seems to tell me the program still logs him out at least every 10 - 20 mins, not just letting the child stay on the PC without interruptions at all during curfew time. Can you please confirm if that's the case?  Also, I'd like to have a remote session with you or the child (not sure if he'd be thrilled to work with me on this though :-).
