Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Hi,

I saw several post about time limits feature not working, as kid is able to continue work and norton family is not logging him out.

Right now I have the same issue and could not find any solution or explanation what we should do in older posts.

So is that bug of software and you will fix it soon? or is that something you even don't know how it happens?

PC system is windows 8

when I click now "view time limits" it shows small window "You have either used up the allowed computer time for today or you are blocked from using the computer at this time. If you choose to continue, your parents will be notified". and that's all. you can use PC how many time you want.

I thought that if time allowance let say 2 hours is finished - then it is finished. you can't log in, you are forced logged out. and this is it.

I am wrong ?

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Hi aivaras,

Can you please let us know if you think the time restrictions function doesn’t work because the child is able to log onto the PC after curfew time and is able to stay online for awhile or he is able to stay online without getting any warnings at all and stay as long as he wants?   The program provides extra 6 mins to allow the child finish up what they were doing.

The program does block the child account when the time is up and they can’t disable the program unless they have the account email and password.  When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would get an extra 60 seconds plus another 60 seconds while displaying a warning message with 60 seconds counting down.  After that,  the child is logged out of his/her account.  The child is allowed to log back to the PC for 60 seconds and receive another warning message with 60 seconds counting down to finish whatever he/she was doing .  Later, the behavior is repeated for the 3rd time,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password of the Norton Online Family account.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Hi,

yes he can log in after curfew time and stays online how much he wants.

The only notification he gets is small windows which says that your parents will be notified.

Its not 6 minutes for sure. I tested my self that day, when those curfew hours were finished, I logged in my self on kids user name and was using PC for few hours. Nothing. you can use with no problem.

So it is not the case about 6 minutes for sure. Please check more detailed.

In my http://family.norton.com when I login, I see hundreds lines with time and " : Blocked - Daily time limit reached [NOJAUSPC_Win8]" (see attachement norton1.jpg)  and inside each of these lines, if I click on it, there is other lines saying that time was extended by 14 minutes (see attachement norton2.jpg).

Hi aivaras and jesage,

The current version of Norton Family is 3.2.1.17.  Can you please check to see if you have the latest version?  To find version number, please click the Norton Family icon in the system tray and select “About Norton Family”.

I'll try to reproduce this on the latest version on my own testing machine.  If I can't reproduce it, I'd like to have a remote session with you.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Hi Katie,

right now I have the same situation and looks like I found how this happens, in which time this bug appears.

I hope I will be able to explain it so you could reproduce.

1. time allowance is let say 1 hour/day. My kid used that time, it's ended.

2. now he logs into account, and get this window saying that your time is gone,. 60 seconds to finish work, OK buttom. Please see attached that first table 1.

3. if those 60second gone, software automatically log off kids account. But he can log in again, and again get the same table for 60 seconds. this can be repeated 3 times.

4. after that, you get next table (sorry I don't have screen show), but that table freeze all windows, you can do nothing with PC, only active is that table, and it says "enter password" to extend time and one of two bullets shows you time till when you can extend. Let say if it happens on 7:35pm, it shows you 8:00pm. IF you don't have password, or click CANCEL, it automatically log off you. You log in again, but in ~5 seconds you get the same table with asking password to extend time. All other windows frozen. But you see that suggested time 8:00pm till when you could extend if you like (you can change that time for sure, but that's just suggestion by Norton software).

5. NOW. VOLIA - if you shut down PC and wait till that suggested time by window in step4 (8:00pm in my example) and turn ON pc then, you log in under kid log in, you can use computer how much you like, no any window, nothing. This is the bug, in this step.

Now let me take screen shot what software is doing (as there is no any pop up now) at this time.

next attachment shows you, that software is doing nothing, just saying that "bla bla your parents will be notified". But you can use computer how much you want.

Please repeat this and you will see.

After you solve this, I will buy professional/extended edition and promote your software to other parents :) thank you

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Not sure my son has figured out the set of steps posted by Aivaras but he's been on the computer for 4 hours despite the daily 1 hour limit.

This limit has worked during the week but failed this weekend.

When I set it up I told the system to ignore inactivity - I'd like to turn this off as I suspect that when in his Minecraft server the system thinks he's inactive.

How do I turn this off? I remember seeing the question when setting up but can't find a way of chaging it now.

I too would purchase this product but like it's Microsoft alternative is easily beaten by an 11 year old!

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Hi Katie / norton

Hows this one going ?

Is it worth holding out , or might be time to shell out another £30 for  an alternative that (hopefully !)works ?

ps tried re-downloading Family too, sadly makes no difference.

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Thanks for the information wiltoniann.  In the previous posts from other users, they states that time monitoring is not working properly.

You mentioned "'stopped working'  status of Norton family".  It sounds like you have a different issue from other users.  Can you please let me know

1. When you get the 'stopped working" error?

2. Is it time monitoring related?

3. What version of Norton Family is installed on the child's Windows machine, or Android device?

Thanks

Katie

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

... I'm sure I have the same problem as other users describe above.

The current symptom is that the 'time limit ' doesn't work. (other facilities like website blocking appear to be active but of course theres no way to know for sure without a test.)

If the 'monitored' user  looks up 'view time remaining'   under any amount of time used up, the reply box states 'you have either used up the allowed computer time for today or you are blocked from using the computer at this time . If you choose to continue your parents will be notified'.

The user is then allowed unlimited time and theres no notification.

Your questions:

1.  the user doesn't get this error; the error is shown in (windows 7) / control panel / system & security / action centre / maintenance... check for solutions to unreported problems....   view problems to report...  (the 'stopped working ' is under 'summary'). view technical details    (which I sent above).

2. yes , only this. But not just 'monitoring' , it should give the user a count down then log off.

3. windows 7 pc,     family  3.2.1.20, re-downloaded twice.

thanks

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Katie,

How far off is solution to the problem with time management in Norton Family Premier on Windows 7 machines?  I gather "they're working on it", but it i appears this has been a problem for at least a year now.  I imagine others who paid for the Premier subscription are similarly frustrated with Symantec.

Thank you,

Hi kgreendot,

After the installation, if you try to visit a forbidden website, do you get blocked?  I want to make sure the program has been installed and configured correctly.

Thanks

Re: Time Limits Just Don't Work (2)

Yes, Norton does appear to successfully block access to forbidden websites. However, Norton does not consistently report the monitored account's web activity.
