Tonight's update crashing IE11

ADMIN UPDATE:

32-bit versions of Internet Explorer were crashing after Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 20150220.001 definition package was applied to their Norton Products. We have released a fix for this issue through our LiveUpdate servers. See the Security Response Blog Article for more information.

Running NIS on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with IE11 (latest updated). Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" error.

Tried resetting IE11 settings to default. No change. Tried running IE11 in no-addons mode. No change. The error is shown as the following:

Now, IPSEng32.dll is a Norton file. So I uninstalled NIS. Bingo - IE11 started working like normal. Re-downloaded and re-installed NIS. At the outset (said last updated 20 hours ago) IE11 worked fine. Then it auto-updated and applied a patch... and instantly IE11 stopped working again. Ergo, something Norton did is breaking my IE11. Doesn't seem to have affected another computer I have running IE10.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The other IE10 PC had been asleep and hadn't updated NIS yet. It is also now crashing in exactly the same manner as this one... and since that PC is almost entirely unrelated to this one in terms of software being used, this is going to be a bigger problem than just me.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue here, add me to the list.  A system restore helped for a few minutes, then likely the Norton update went off and hosed IE again.  To note, I noticed that in my sys tray, I now have two Norton icons, one with a green check mark and one with a red x.  Clicking either opens the console and when it does, everything is green.  What the heck?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem with IE11 running on Windows 8.1 Pro with NIS 21.6.0.32. I've had one or more IE windows running all evening and all crashed spontaneously sometime before midnight. I was busy with other things so didn't try running IE again right away, but when I did it quickly became obvious that IE won't start without crashing. :-( Windows Application log reports what others have indicated. Here's an excerpt from "Event 1000":

Faulting application name: IEXPLORE.EXE, version: 11.0.9600.17416, time stamp: 0x5452eed9
Faulting module name: IPSEng32.dll, version: 14.2.1.9, time stamp: 0x54c8223b

For grins I use the Windows Resource Checker to see if it could detect/repair any protected system files:

   SFC /SCANNOW

It reported corruption that it was unable to fix. Scanning the related log file showed lots of messages that didn't obviously relate to IE crashing, and way more than I wanted to spend time studying. Next I gave the Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool a crack at doing repairs:

   DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This completed successfully. Repeating the previous SFC command showed no errors. I rebooted for good measure and then tried IE again - no luck, still crashing.

Looking at NIS history for the time interval before IE spontaneously started crashing I found five updates that were automatically installed about 10:45pm including one titled "Norton IPS Definitions". I'm running on a Surface Pro 2 and although the desktop IE11 was unusable I noticed that the "tablet mode" version of IE was still functional. I used it to download and install Firefox and it also worked fine. Was getting ready to uninstall NIS as a test when I found this thread - so I don't think I'll bother! Hopefully Symantec will get on this ASAP...

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue - had an IE 11 session open. Walked away. Came back to find ie session crashed errors, and can't re-launch ie. Reboots, etc... don't resolve. Error log shows reference to IPSEng32.dll. Tracked that file down to folder with update time of about exactly when it crashed, so it has to be that it ran live update and killed it. Main PC is Win7-64 bit, N360, IE 11. Chrome and Firefox appear to still work, so at least I have options. Second PC/laptop that I rarely use - powered it on earlier to patch it - it now has the same behavior, but I can't state that it was working earlier (but since live update ran, I'm about 99.99999999% sure it was)

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Thank goodness I am not the only one, yup, my IE 11 has stopped working but fire fox works fine. So I checked some things out and connected it right to Norton update. I reconfirmed this by restoring my computer and redoing the update. I hope this problem is fixed quickly. I have Windows 8.1 professional. The wife said this is what I get for still using IE 11... haha!

Me too :(  I  uninstalled Norton since the issue occurred within 30 seconds of Norton updating.  Then IE11 worked.  I reinstalled Norton.  Again IE11 does not work.  Using Google Chrome now.  Atleast I know its not just me but I hope they have it fixed soon.  Using Windows 7 Pro 64.

Like the others posting in this thread, I'm having the same problem.  Using Norton Internet Security on 2 PCs running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.  IE 11 worked fine on both as of 8:30 PM EST but crashed when I went back to it on both computers two hours later.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

IE11 on Windows 8.1 desktop (but not IE on the Start screen) exhibits the reported problem above.  Chrome is slow to respond, and did initially throw an error, but does work.  Even though it is not supported, IE8 on Windows XP also shows the error, but will work (if you don't mind the error window always up).

So much for quality control at Norton!

At least I know I am not alone...

Same here. Was working in IE11 when it choked. How does this happen? Win7-64 & IE11 isn't a rare combination to have, so why wasn't this bug found and fixed BEFORE releasing the update to the customer base? .......Because IT WASN'T TESTED!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same here, surfing the net, suddenly got a "Norton Product Error 3048, 3" I believe.

Norton fixed itself...and then instantly crashed IE 11 in the middle of browsing.  Can't reopen.  Good thing I have Chrome too.

Norton better have all it's software engineers burning the midnight oil.  How in the world does Norton QA do something as mind-boggling as releasing an update that instantly disables the world's most used Internet browser with no sign or warning???

There's probably  a LOT of panicked people right now trying to restore systems settings, reload operating systems, etc.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Hi all,

You can count me in. Using Norton360 in Win 7 32bit. This is a work laptop and I haven't used for about a week. The problem coincided with a bunch of Windows Updates installing so I spent the last 2 hours using system restore and then reinstalling the updates one by one. The problem seemed to come back at random times. It was then I actually bothered to look at the crash info and discovered it was IPSEng32.dll and did a search and found this thread.

Do people who make the updates actually bother to test them? It would seem it's happening to at least Win 7 and 8 both 32 and 64bit. God knows how many people it must be affecting.

Cheers

Mick

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I have to agree with Sunfox on the poor judgement exercised by pushing this type of update out on a Friday evening.

It sure would be nice if Symantec provided a feature to allow the user to roll back to a previous definition set ...

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Confirmed that the problem is caused by the latest Live Update.  I restored an SSR Image from yesterday, disabled Live Update before it auto-updated, and all works correctly.  If I let Live Update install today's updates, IE11 will immediately crash on startup - noting in the details tab that the problem is related to ipseng32.dll.

This happens on two completely separate machines - both respond identically to the fix mentioned above.  Please unmess whatever you've done to the IPS in NIS, so we can have our machines back.

Also, more attention to quality control would be appreciated - as you've completely disabled browsing for machines that only have the IE browser available - unless NIS is uninstalled.  This does not look good.  :-(

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem here with the IPSEng32.dll.

IE worked all day, and then started crashing this evening once I got home from being out.

IE crashes immediately when it is open.  Removed Norton, and it works as expected.  Reinstalled it and it works.  Updated it repetitively until it was up to date (which required oking several patches), and the problem returned.  This is definitely a problem caused by the new update.

Hopefully it is fixed soon.  Are these patches tested before being sent out?

I have the same problem. 3 different computers, all different brands, all running variations of Windows 7. Started failing in succession, probably as they were patched. Symantec, when are we going to get a fix? Get someone official on here and give us some answers! There's no excuse for this. Note also that my copy is the freebie that comes with Comcast's xfinity.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

This happened on both my desktop PC and laptop running Windows 7 64bit and MSIE 11.

Resolution (Windows 7 64bit)

- Uninstall Norton Antivirus by going to Windows Button > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Select Norton Antivirus and click Uninstall. When prompted during the uninstall click "Remove All Account Settings" and Norton Identity Safe by clicking "No Thanks" on the bottom right.

- Login to your Norton account by going to https://manage.norton.com/Subscriptions. You'll want to remove the license you've assigned to your affected PC. You'll need to do this because you only get so many installs. Some people bought 1 license some people purchased 3 or more. Simply click the trash can icon next to your computer name in the list to free up the license.

- On the same page towards the top click Download to download the Norton Antivirus Installer. Walk through the steps and complete the install.

This solved the issue on both of my computers that were affected and I have not had any issues since.

-Cheers

Same prob, uninstalled/reinstalled turned off auto/live updates until this gets fixed. Back up and running at least...

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I don't think the problem is caused by IPSEng32.dll, because it has not been changed. Its version is 14.2.1.9 and its modified date is 2015-02-05 7:16PM. It must be caused by something else from the latest update.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem as everyone else...  Life is good if I uninstall Norton Security Suite - IE works fine then.  But with it running, IE crashes immediately (and repeatedly) faulting on the IPSEng32.dll module.

Just throwing in my experience to help get Norton's attention focused on a fix.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Make sure when you uninstall you remove ALL settings. There is an option (link) on the uninstaller to do this. If you don't, it will keep the same directory and files thinking you're going to reinstall - which you do and you're essentially loading the bad file again.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

The same thing is happening to me. I can see in the windows event logs that I started getting the error at 9:09 PM which is the same time that N360 shows me that I received an update. This also happened to 2 PC's running IE11. Chrome is working fine.

Yeah, that turned out to be unrelated, but likely triggered by all the reboots surrounding my testing of NIS. Once every blue moon my Creative X-Fi Titanium HD audio drivers suddenly decide to permanently drop the analog output (known, but never-fixed issue on X64 systems), which causes all sorts of issues... and required deleting the device / letting the drivers reinstall.

Same issue on Windows 7 64 bit fully patched.

Crash loop when trying to start internet explorer. Module is IPSEng32.dll ver 14.2.1.9 updated a few hours ago.

Firefox 35.0.1 runs but the Norton tool bar is disabled and reports as 'incompatible' despite it working with this version of Firefox yesterday.
