Tonight's update crashing IE11

ADMIN UPDATE:

32-bit versions of Internet Explorer were crashing after Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 20150220.001 definition package was applied to their Norton Products. We have released a fix for this issue through our LiveUpdate servers. See the Security Response Blog Article for more information.

Running NIS on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with IE11 (latest updated). Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" error.

Tried resetting IE11 settings to default. No change. Tried running IE11 in no-addons mode. No change. The error is shown as the following:

Now, IPSEng32.dll is a Norton file. So I uninstalled NIS. Bingo - IE11 started working like normal. Re-downloaded and re-installed NIS. At the outset (said last updated 20 hours ago) IE11 worked fine. Then it auto-updated and applied a patch... and instantly IE11 stopped working again. Ergo, something Norton did is breaking my IE11. Doesn't seem to have affected another computer I have running IE10.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The other IE10 PC had been asleep and hadn't updated NIS yet. It is also now crashing in exactly the same manner as this one... and since that PC is almost entirely unrelated to this one in terms of software being used, this is going to be a bigger problem than just me.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Actually, that doesn't matter. The cause of the problem and the module that's failing do not have to be the same. They could have "patched" something else that uncovered a previously latent bug in the intrusion protection stuff (IPSEng32.dll).

Same same, Norton 360 has I.E. puking up all over itself......

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

FYI... Drill down to the folder - IPSDefs\20150220.001

On my PC there was a similar folder from the 19th...

Comparing - something funky with scrx86ie.dat - it's way smaller than the 19th's.

Use Quick Controls - disable everything.

Rename scrx86ie.dat..

Copy the file from the 19th..

Enable the Quick Controls..

Disable LiveUpdate

IE works...

(Note/Disclaimer: I have no clue what this fix does to NIS's functionality)

Hey.... how about telling us how to roll back the latest update so some of us can at least get some work done....

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Had the same problem today.  I do a weekly Preventive Processes where I run programs like Disk Cleanup, Defragmenter, CCLeaner, Malwarebytes, Norton (Quick and Full scan).  Today got the IE error.  Could not figure out what was causing it.  Went to Thursday's restore point, did a restore.  Works.  Then my Windows 7 tells me the computer is at risk for the virus files not being up to date.  I update, and IE now doesn't work with same problems as above with others.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

We are having the same issue at our office.  Everything was working then just around midnight all IE browsers stopped working.  The crazy part is we saw it happening.  We had machines working with the browser opened, then we would look again and IE was crashed.  Around the same time we had some consultants here working on something and they were on the phone with their team in a different state and he mentioned that they are having problems with their IE browsers crashing.  We are completely different companies and share no data or networks with each other.  There was too much of a coincidence so  I started doing some research on the IPSEng32.dll faulting module in IE and it lead back to Norton.  We uninstalled it from the problematic machines and IE was fine again.

We are on the phone with Symantec now.

Exact same issue here with IE 11 on Windows 7.

Using Chrome to access the web right now.....Grrr!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Use Firefox or Chrome until they fix the problem. If you dont have them installed then my advice would be:

1-Turn off your internet.

2- Use windows system restore to a one day or more.

3- Open Norton / Settings / Updates / Turn Automatic Live Update Off

4- Turn on your internet.

5- Open IE and download Firefox or Chrome.

Yep, Same problem here. Restored computer to yesterday and it worked fine....then had Norton update and problem was back...couldn't use IE at all. Chrome is working.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I am having the same problem.

Norton Internet Security

IE 11.0.9600.17631

IPSEng.dll 14.2.1.9

Everything was fine at about 18:00 local time.  Not any more...

Lucky I jumped onto another computer and installed Chrome before Live Update could shut down IE.  Unfortunately, my first machine only has IE on it.  I have no way to get another browser and, thanks to it's dependence  on a browser, even Norton's "New Version Check" won't work.

I'd like to be able to use my first computer sometime soon, so please fix this, Norton.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Just had a chat w an agent. Apparently Symantec is aware of the issue. ETA: 24-48 hrs. I am not sure why don't they just roll back the last update. Maybe it is more complicated than that but I doubt it.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem here, on both of my systems. Laptop and Desktop. Both after an update from Norton.

Lucky we have a Mac also other wise I would not be able to send this message.

I hope Norton will have an update soon.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Exact the same problem.  W7 - home w/IE 11.  Restore system to earlier date then IE works again.  I also noticed that the Norton was inactived after rstoration and asking me to update. I did it and once Norton back on its feet with new update, IE 7 stop working immediately.

Same issue for me.  I did a system restore and Internet Explorer worked fine.  Ran the Norton update, approx. 240mb, and got the IE crash as the original poster described.

Fortunately, FireFox is working fine.  I can just wait till Symantec fixes the fix I suppose.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same here. Did a 5-day system restore. No problems. Updated Norten. Same issue. On with support while they uninstalled Norton. No problems. Re-installed Norton. Same issue. Said he had just received official notice of issue and they would be working with Microsoft to resolve the issue quickly and expected fix in their next update.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

This is probably going to be unpopular, but unless you do not have a second browser or a second A/V solution, I recommend NOT uninstalling the Norton tools. You put yourself at more risk. Symantec is going to have to fix this the same way they broke it: LiveUpdate. But, if you uninstall their tools, it won't be able to fix itself when the fix is released. I recommend patience, if you can access the Internet another way. NOTE: I do NOT work for them. I'm just an average security professional chiming in.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

If they can't do an actual rollback, then all they'd have to do is copy the last day's functional update, give it a new name, and push it out as a brand new update. Problem solved until they can fix the new definitions properly. Waiting 24-48 hours is NOT a viable solution when someone in this thread has even narrowed it down to the exact file that's broken.

Whoever pushed that update needs to get woken up and told to FIX IT.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I went out for dinner with IE11 running on multiple computers and they all crashed when I returned four hours later.  All computers are now having issues with IE11 crashing on first invocation.  Some computers are Windows 7 and some are Windows 8.  All computers have Norton 360 installed.   Using Chrome for now until Norton can push out a fix.

I first went to windows help site.  Tried all those things, reset IE, etc.  Finally I did a system restore (Hate to do it, but . . . )

IE working after PC restored to yesterday (the 19th) at 3 PM.

Norton wanted to update . .  I clicked OK.  The very second the Norton update completed its install, the IE popups reappear over and over.

Same thing for me on two computers.  First a laptop, then my desktop.  Laptop issue was concerning to me so I logged into my desktop and it worked perfectly - then I ran Norton Live Update and... ENDLESS CRASH LOOP!!!!  flitchrt:

I wonder who does the testing at Symantec?  :)  Too funny, I was just listening to some investment guy touting the great opportunity to be had in Symantec stocks!! =D  It would be really helpful if someone would tell us to just use Chrome, since that's what I'm typing this in... :P

Same problem on two PC's at home and most likely on two PC's at my business. We use a web based management program that is ONLY certified to run reliably on IE. So I can't run my business tomorrow unless I go out early and screw around to get things up and running. What is a good alternative to Norton? Generally I've been satisfied but this is absolutely ridiculous.

It took me quite a while to sort out what was going on. I couldn't get any meaningful error message from IE11 until I created a new user account and attempted to run IE11 from that account. Then I was able to get the BEX error with reference to the DLL to search on.
