Tonight's update crashing IE11

ADMIN UPDATE:

32-bit versions of Internet Explorer were crashing after Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 20150220.001 definition package was applied to their Norton Products. We have released a fix for this issue through our LiveUpdate servers. See the Security Response Blog Article for more information.

Running NIS on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with IE11 (latest updated). Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" error.

Tried resetting IE11 settings to default. No change. Tried running IE11 in no-addons mode. No change. The error is shown as the following:

Now, IPSEng32.dll is a Norton file. So I uninstalled NIS. Bingo - IE11 started working like normal. Re-downloaded and re-installed NIS. At the outset (said last updated 20 hours ago) IE11 worked fine. Then it auto-updated and applied a patch... and instantly IE11 stopped working again. Ergo, something Norton did is breaking my IE11. Doesn't seem to have affected another computer I have running IE10.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The other IE10 PC had been asleep and hadn't updated NIS yet. It is also now crashing in exactly the same manner as this one... and since that PC is almost entirely unrelated to this one in terms of software being used, this is going to be a bigger problem than just me.

Having the same issue. Wish i had checked my event viewer before re-installing IE11.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

What the hell...now can they send out an untested update and not respond with a fix in a more reasonable time frame. Time to remove Norton and move to another program. Refund?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Does anyone know if Norton Liveupdate can be rolled back?  If not, that should be the top priority on the list to provide to users.

I got my 89 year old father Norton 360.  Tomorrow he'll call me telling me that he messed up something on his computer and now "The Internet" doesn't work anymore.  Great, now I'm playing tech support.

Nice job Norton.  Especially in my job I'm a Senior Quality Assurance Analyst / Team Lead (not for Norton obviously).

Same thing here.  Was using IE just fine and then bam, no longer working.

4- computers now..... didn't have time to stop the updates. I wonder how long we have to wait for a solution...a day, after the weekend, weeks..

Glad i installed Google Chrome as a back-up just in the case like this...

Yeah, not particularly happy... they should have issued an immediate rollback update/patch by now.  They're really dropping the ball.

Same issue here. IE 11 and Norton Security Suite. IE stopped working. Uninstalled Norton and IE is fine. I'm sure their working on a fix as we speak. Till then I'll wait before re-installing Norton. I'm running windows 7 Ultimate.

Updares seem to be going out every 5 minutes, but haven't solved it yet. My phone will soon be ringing off the hook when my customers try to use IE, and I've told them all to buy Norton.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Short term fix:

Turn off tamper protection and liveupdate, go to the NortonData Definitions IPSdefs directory, and rename the 20150220.001 directory to something else.  UAC will whine, but it will let you if you have appropriate access.

Turn tamper protection back on, and leave liveupdate off until they fix the issue.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

When I first started this thread just before midnight Eastern time, there were no other reports elsewhere (I spent like half an hour before that trying to troubleshoot/research), and it said there were 5 people including me on this forum... which is probably pretty normal.

Now, 2.5 hours later, it says there's 115 people - and that's climbing fast - and I'm finding reports of this issue popping up all over the place. Most people still have no clue what the problem is (or that it relates to Norton). I'd say the chance to minimize brand impact by silently fixing the issue so most simply blame it on a Microsoft glitch, is quickly disappearing.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue with IE8, IE9, 10 and 11 only fix so far is to uninstall SEP application and reinstall when they fix it or provide another update to rectify the issue

tested Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne all same

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue  on Win 7 (x64).  Seems like this one should have been caught. (Wonder how many searches they get on IPSEng32.dll and c0000417 within the next 12 hours.)

Their little support tool should have a way to search for something meaningful and useful rather than the only information being in the forums.  (Then we could flag that we have the same issue....and be notified by email when it is resolved.)

Why can't they recall the update or push a previous know good as a new update?

Another me too here! Started around 10:30 pm and found this thread. Signed up so I could put a message that I was having the same problem and by the time I got signed up using chrome without the Norton Vault which has all my passwords this is 4 pages of me too's.  Going to bed hope they have it fixed in the morning.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Thank Google for finding this thread in the search results -- no way I could have possibly determined on my own that this problem is related to Norton.

I was about to roll back Microsoft's February patch for IE (just got around to installing it tonight) when I came across this discussion.

Running IE9 on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64. Typing this on IE9 64-bit (where the Norton Toolbar isn't supported).

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I have the same problem as all of the above users, currently TIMES 8 machines (laptops and desktops), and I am guessing that I will have dozens of clients calling in the morning.

All machines are running 64 bit Win7 (Ultimate and Professional), IE 11, loaded with NIS 2014. All machines pretty much crash IE11 upon start up.

I first noticed this on my laptop at 8:00pm (PST) and by 8:30 could not find a Win7 machine that would run Explorer without error. The few machines with Firefox and Chrome installed will connect to the internet just fine.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Here I try again.  Greetings from Australia.  Around 2 hours ago I had exactly the same experience as many others have already reported. One minute ie 11 is working fine then it just started crashing.  I tried all the various fixes but without success.  I started my other machine and within minutes the same thing happened.  Both machines are running Windows 7 and ie 11 and Norton Internet Security. On both machines  I rolled back to a previous image (18/02/2015)  and the problem was fixed but Norton reported it was out of date.  I was working on one machine to record this on this forum when ie crashed again.  I checked Norton and sure enough it had automatically updated.  I then removed Norton and the problem has gone away.   So here I am waiting for a fix and using less then perfect security.  Glad and sad I'm not the only one.

Bye

David

Had the same problem with NIS, Windows 8.1 Pro. Did not affect Chrome. Uninstalled NIS and IE 11 worked fine. So, problem is with NIS, IPSEng32.dll . Would appreciate a Symantec fix promptly as I have to support other computers with NIS installed.

If you go to this webpage when logged out, it says that zero people gave kudos to this issue. When logged in it says 28 people gave kudos to this issue. When logged out it says 0 other people had this issue. When logged in it says 54 other people have reported they have this issue. This is an unethical move norton. You should not mislead people who are not logged in that your software is fine. It is not fine. Many of us are having a problem and you should let people who are not logged in see that this is a big issue. Please stop being evil.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

It serves no purpose to shred well meaning and experienced customers or Symantec/Norton staff... The former helped isolate the temporary fixes (Uninstall -- WORKS and confirms the problem relates to NIS, or a definition rollback, which is kind of scary), and it's the job of the latter to sound the alarm and escalate up the food chain that they just torched the planet-wide customer install base with their update.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Have same issue....spoke with Norton Chat Support. Working on issue. Their words at 1:18:20am CDT, 02/21/2015 ...this issue is being caused by certain changes that we are trying to integrate with the Norton product to enhance its performance and to make your computer more secure and up to date.

Our development team is working on that and will release the patch to resolve this issue with in few hours. In the mean while please try using different browser if you have or else, you may try after sometime. We are sorry for the trouble that this is causing and for taking up your valuable time. I appreciate your patience throughout and would like to thank you for your precious time.

The fix for this issue will be released via LiveUpdate. This patch will be automatically updated. However, for a safer side, I request you to run LiveUpdate manually as well.

...So I will wait. Good luck to all

John.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Just to confirm. Upgraded product version to see if that eliminates it. Installed new version and IE worked again. First live update installed "intrusion prevention Engine version 7.1.1.18 Definitions set version 20150220.001 and IE broke.

Cant see how to uninstall the update. Hopefully they fix it pretty quick. Maybe someone here knows how to revert that update in the mean time?
