Tonight's update crashing IE11

ADMIN UPDATE:

32-bit versions of Internet Explorer were crashing after Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 20150220.001 definition package was applied to their Norton Products. We have released a fix for this issue through our LiveUpdate servers. See the Security Response Blog Article for more information.

Running NIS on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with IE11 (latest updated). Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" error.

Tried resetting IE11 settings to default. No change. Tried running IE11 in no-addons mode. No change. The error is shown as the following:

Now, IPSEng32.dll is a Norton file. So I uninstalled NIS. Bingo - IE11 started working like normal. Re-downloaded and re-installed NIS. At the outset (said last updated 20 hours ago) IE11 worked fine. Then it auto-updated and applied a patch... and instantly IE11 stopped working again. Ergo, something Norton did is breaking my IE11. Doesn't seem to have affected another computer I have running IE10.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The other IE10 PC had been asleep and hadn't updated NIS yet. It is also now crashing in exactly the same manner as this one... and since that PC is almost entirely unrelated to this one in terms of software being used, this is going to be a bigger problem than just me.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Wanted to chime in and report that I'm having the same problem, on a laptop and a desktop, both running Win 8.1, and on a desktop running Win 7.  All was working fine earlier, but when I came back to one of them after 11 pm EST, desktop IE 11 won't function.  Interesting point:  the "metro UI" version of IE 11 appears to be unaffected.  I'm using it right now to view and post on this forum.

Having the same issue

Nah I think Yahoo did, maybe this afternoon.....

(in response to "did Google buy Norton")

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problems here. IE on 2 different PC's, both stopped working tonight.

To get my ie10, 64-bit back up and working I did the following:

Turn off my internet. Did a System Restore to a Point a couple days ago.

Turned off Norton Live Update. Turned Internet connection back on, and voila, IE works again.

My previous attempt at a System Restore to solve the problem, to the same restore point, had failed, as Norton updated itself before I had a chance to try ie.

Norton 360 Premier Edition, version 21.6.0.32 (at least that's what it shows now that it's working again)

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit

IE: 10.0.9200.17229

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I got a hold of Norton on live chat, they say they are aware that the latest update is causing Internet Explorer to shutdown.  I had to do a system restore to an earlier date, then use Google Chrome to get on at all.   Had the same problem  with a windows 8.1 computer, then my windows 7 computer did same thing as soon as I got online and the Norton udpated.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue with windows 7 64bit, IE 11 and Norton 360

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue here, but both Win 7/IE 11 and Win 8/IE 11.  All seem related to an IPS update earlier according to my event logs.  All pointing to a faulty module:  ipseng32.dll.  Tried disabling the Intrusion Protection and Browser protection features in NIS but no help.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I too am having the same issue, and this is super bad timing for me,

I have two days off, the first time in several months and I have a lot of work to get done where I need access to google images and other online reference sites from my main PC as in my spare time I wright software and I have a very large application to write while I'm off.

At the moment I'm on my laptop which doesn't have Norton and everything is fine.

Another issue will be my Mothers Laptop, she has a terminal illness and is cooped up in bed for most of the day and all she does is play bloody facebook games, luckly she hasn't been well the past few days so she hasn't switched on her laptop,

How do I stop norton from auto updating so it wont affect her computer ?

Same here, multiple Windows 7 64bit IE 11 boxes all screwed, since update last night

I hope Norton intend to push an urgent fix for this

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Registered to report that my personal machine is affected by this issue. This needs immediate attention!

Windows 7 64-bit, Internet Explorer 11.

Temporary Work Around:

Disable tamper protection from the Main window under Settings. Rename or delete the file IPSEng32.dll

It's located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Security\NortonData\22.1.0.9\Definitions\IPSDefs\xxxxxxx\IPSEng32.dll

Kudos0

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Yup .. exactly same issue on my Desktop & Laptop.  Interestingly, this effects Internet Explorer 11 only on Desktop mode, in Metro mode it seems to work fine.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue here: Windows 8.1 x64, IE 11, NIS 21.6.0.32

Can somebody at Norton press the "revert" button on the friday-evening-special-botched-update, pretty please? You must have a "back out of this mess" procedure, don't you? ... are all the lights out over there?

I must say though, I feel much safer online now that Norton has realized what it really takes to keep us safe - prevent us from using IE. Way to go Norton, hats off to achieving perfect protection!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

After following Chipster's fix, another update blew down new defs which broke it again.  I copied the 394k scrx86ie.dat from the 19th to the new folder in IPSDefs and then disabled automatic updates and am back in business.

I left one machine with auto-updates enabled (as a canary in the mine), and once it fixes itself, I will re-enable auto-update on the rest.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Well done, works like a charm.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I have the same problem on Windows 8.1 64bit running Internet Explorer 11 and Norton 360, all fully up to date.

It started with IE crashing on some already open windows, then IE would crash if I tried to start it up.  Based on my Norton security logs, it was probably:

* Norton Web Protection Definitions (the one between 00:30 and 03:00 GMT 21/2/2015)

* Norton IPS Definitions

Note: Internet Explorer's Modern version works fine in Windows 8.1.

The following did not fix the problem (many mentioned by others already):

* Restarting the PC

* Stopping all IE add ons

* Emptying the cache

* Resetting IE11 to default settings

* Disabling smart firewall and Antivirus auto protect.

A system restore to a few days ago solved the problem, but after Norton updated itself, the problem came back.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same issue here using Norton 360. Windows 7 32-bit.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

For now... there's no need to do a system restore or any kind of massive investigation.. just uninstall Norton.

Concerned about being unprotected for a few days? Install a trial to Kaspersky.

Ran into this issue with a customer using Norton AntiVirus.  Uninstalled Norton, restarted, problem resolved currently.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I have Norton Security Suite from Comcast and it is happening on that as well.  I have seen the problem on two different computers I have.

Same issue here on Two PCs. Spent the past two hours trying to resolve.

Firefox is working like someone said earlier.  Hope it gets fixed soon.

I also learned the hard way - that autoupdate unfixes my fix..

Apply the fix - then disable the autoupdate.  Original post edited.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

This Reply is for the person who needed to know how to dodge the Norton Auto Update before his mother's computer were to receive tonight's problematic Norton Update. Instructions for turning off Norton AutoUpdater Service.

If you're unable to wait a few hours until a resolve has been completed... First I would disconnect her computer from the Internet. Then open your norton security product. On the main product screen (mine is the latest version of NIS), there is a tab named Settings along the top of the program box. Click "Settings", then click on the tab "Computer". Within the Computer screen is a left pane bar with the option "Updates...configure updates". Click on Updates. Opens new box with options. Turn off Auto Updates and Auto Pulses and Auto new versions. Then click okay. This should work. Reconnect Internet access to computer. NOTE: Be sure to turn them back on after a resolve has been issued. Hope this helps.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Your latest update just killed IE. Roll back to a restore point 2 days ago fixed things then had to install your stupid updates that you didn't check for problems and Same thing for myself and my wife on her laptop. (internet explorer has stopped working) Chrome is working so at least we have that. Hope you can get your act together overnight and fix this as I am sure you have affected many millions of users.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Did 2 system restores before I figured out Norton360 was corrupting my system and it updates right after the restore .  Turned off internet then turned iff autoupdate.   Looks like to to install Kaspersky.  15 year's of using Norton may be coming to an end.   Tell your friends before it crashes them or if it already did.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same IE crash on Windows 8.1 for me, in Norton IPSEng32.dll.

But I tried starting IE using the interface formerly known as "Metro" and it works. That's how I got here.

I hope it's fixed before my 85 year-old mom tries to do her crosswords tomorrow. I don't want to have to explain how the internet security software broke her internet.

Kudos0

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I have the same exact problem. It is the update that has done it. The file is IPSEng32.dll thats causing it. I have tried everything possible and nothing works.

Kudos0

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Confirmed that renaming the IPSDefs Folder (20150220.001) fixes the issue.

***Kudos to crazed.moron.

If you'd like to be more exact, scrx86ie.dat is the offending file. Simply copy/replace that file from the previous day.

***Kudos to Chipster

NOTE: You will need to disable Norton Tamper Protection to make changes to the IPSDef Directory. Also, Disable Norton Live Update until a fix has been released.

This crap reminds me of a security update Mcafee pushed out 3 or 4 years ago and it kept causing every ones pc's to reboot over and over again and people were pissed

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

The same here for three computers.

This fixed it for me:

Go to Control Panel, Internet Options
On the Advance tab, under group security enable these two Options
"Enable 64 bit processes for enhanced protected mode"
and
"Enable enhanced protected mode"

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I deleted the most recent IPS definitions as well and turned off auto live update and IE works like a charm, but be warned, if you use your Identity Safe, just using that will cause it to recreate the most recent definitions and then the problems will start all over again.

Windows 10 Pro v.1703 64-Bit / IE 11 / Firefox 55.0.3 / NSBU 22.10.1.10 / NU 16.0.2.53 / Veritas System Recovery 16 SP2

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem on two machines I have, both running Windows 8.1 and IE11 with Norton 360 on.

Luckily found this forum before did much work on trying to fix.

This really is not good enough from Norton, they will loose customers if they do not fix soon!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same here two different PC running Windows 7 one with IE 10 other with IE 11.  Same crashing issues and a continuous loop of Windows wanting to report the crash issue to Microsoft until I log off the account on the IE 11 machine.  Hope this gets fixed soon as my sub is up in 15 days.  I may seriously think about changing to a different provider depending on how fast Symantec addresses this very serious issue with their security products.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Was up early and busy on IE when it all went weird 90 minutes ago. So glad I checked out this forum before I did anything else. I have Chrome which is working fine and will keep checking back to IE. Someone is in trouble at Symantec I bet.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Add me to the long list of those who have IE crashing after NIS updated.

Win 7 IE10 and IE11 affected... Win 8 IE11 affected as well.  Win XP IE8 not affected.

Norton... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE back out your recent update.

Luckily I had Firefox on two of the three non-working PCs which doesn't appear to be affected so at least I could still get on the internet... otherwise I really would have been SOLed... the issue hit my wife's laptop first so she asked me to try mine so I fire it up and at first it was working just fine so I thought it was just my wife's laptop but then lo and behold within a couple minutes IE "stopped working:" on my laptop as well.

At this point I was freaking out thinking we had a rouge virus running amuck until I find that others are having the exact same issue with the EXACT same errors in the Windows Event log... WTF Norton!!!!!!!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

What a relief its not just my system.

Experiencing the same problems as everyone else; Norton making IE inoperable. Waiting for a fix.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I had the exact same problem and after a lot of head hunting was finally able to pinpoint it to the latest NIS update. Damn Symantec for causing me all this botheration. Who pays for my 4 hours of wasted man hours....

Had to shut down auto updating to prevent further crashes.

If they don't resolve it soon enough, I am leaving them forever....

whatever happened to Q&A before release.....

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same here, been an interesting 3 hours.  Back rev'd to IE10 and same issue.  I did not try to un/reinstall Norton 360.

I won't post the report, says the same thing for IE11 and IE10.....
