Tonight's update crashing IE11

ADMIN UPDATE:

32-bit versions of Internet Explorer were crashing after Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 20150220.001 definition package was applied to their Norton Products. We have released a fix for this issue through our LiveUpdate servers. See the Security Response Blog Article for more information.

Running NIS on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with IE11 (latest updated). Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" error.

Tried resetting IE11 settings to default. No change. Tried running IE11 in no-addons mode. No change. The error is shown as the following:

Source
Internet Explorer

Now, IPSEng32.dll is a Norton file. So I uninstalled NIS. Bingo - IE11 started working like normal. Re-downloaded and re-installed NIS. At the outset (said last updated 20 hours ago) IE11 worked fine. Then it auto-updated and applied a patch... and instantly IE11 stopped working again. Ergo, something Norton did is breaking my IE11. Doesn't seem to have affected another computer I have running IE10.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The other IE10 PC had been asleep and hadn't updated NIS yet. It is also now crashing in exactly the same manner as this one... and since that PC is almost entirely unrelated to this one in terms of software being used, this is going to be a bigger problem than just me.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I crashed on my laptop hours ago --  Norton comes as part of the deal from my ISP provider.

Did the regular - system restore, drag out the repair discs.....nada

THANK YOU to the original poster.  That was all I found when I used the desktop to google ispeng etc.

Called my ISP provider - who in the prior 15 minutes was drowning in calls about IE crashing.  Relayed what I had found.  While I was on the phone, I stripped out Norton - and IE loaded.

Turned on WIndows Defender and installed a trail of Kaspersky.

Now here is what is interesting.

This is a 9 month old HP Probook running Win 7 Pro.  It is a 64 bit.   It is IE 11

Norton crashed it.

After fixing it, I did an ohmigawd....on no .....the desktop  (used by husband 99% of the time)...and ran back into the den to turn off the auto-updates of Norton.

Brought up Norton  - too late. It had just updated 5 minutes before.  Crossed my fingers and started opening IE pages.    No Problem!!

That machine is also a 64 bit - but it runs Win  7 Home.  The real difference is he never gets around to updating  ---  and it is still running IE 9

So 64 bit with Win 7   and IE 11 crashed but  64 bit with Win 7 and IE 9 did not.

Has to be something about  IE 10 and IE 11.

My ISP provider tech dept said the ispeng32.dll  was a 32 bit code.   It seems to be blowing up the 64 bits running the newer IE versions

Also same problem here on multiple computers...

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Unbelievable, is there any norton programmer which is testing the automatic updates before rollout? Any? Only one ?

Thanks to norton for this morning, over 50 call´s from customers with the same problem.

Now it´s time to switch to other av solutions like german engineered software G-Data!

2. no other installed browser like Chrome or Opera affected

3. the trick of enabling Enhanced Protected Mode doesn't work for me

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Both computer with norton 360 and IE11 are crashing .

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Yikes - no on the updates!

That is what cause it in the first place.

Try the instructions some people have given above - going to Tools, Internet Options, ADvanced and clicking the Enable Enhanced Protection under the Security group.

Turn off the live updates and try the rollback Symantec gave in a post above

Turn off live updates (in case they make it worse) and stay with Chrome

Get really annoyed, strip out Norton and try Kaspersky's 3o day trial.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Intelligent updates only contains  virus defs.

You will need updates for reputation revocation, firewall, web defs etc etc which is only available via Automatic/ manual live update channel. Please keep that in mind while following that procedure.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Are you 64 or 32 bit?

Our desktop which survived the updates is the 64 with IE 9

On the other hand, the desktop updated less than 30 minutes ago and my laptop got knocked out over 5 hours ago.

Maybe Norton has isolated the bad update

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Add me to the list.  Win 7 Pro 64.  IE 10 crashes when I open it.  Usually immediately, but sometimes it takes a few minutes.  I just assumed it was related to the System Restores I have been doing tonight for non-critical issues, but I guess not.  IPSEng32.dll is noted in the crash details, so I finally Googled "IPSEng32.dll keeps crashing ie" in Firefox and this thread came up at the top under "In the News."

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same here, Win7 x64 + IE 10 & 8.1 + IE 11

I also can confirm the workaround enabling enhanced protected mode in Win 7.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Hi all,

Discovered this problem this morning. Fix for me was "Turning on Enhanced 64-Bit Protected Mode" via Control Panel > Internet options > Advanced > Security section > Enable 64-bit processes for enhanced protection mode.

PC - Windows 8.1.

Hope this helps someone else

Firefox should still be working OK.  You're the only one so far who's had trouble with FF.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I too have the same problem using IE 11, (Windows has stopped working message box), however, my son wasn't on line last night so I turned his pc on (Both using NIS) and noted his IE is working. Ran live update from NIS and keep getting red error message that not all updates have completed. When I check history it shows 'IPS definitions failed to update'. Do you think Norton have pulled this as it might be the culprit?

Using Google chrome at the moment.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Fix,quickly. Shit company.

Same problem here - still!  Signed up just to add my voice to the many others here.  Fortunately I had Chrome available so I could get in to find this Forum!  Many thanks to those who have reported it / chased Symantec - re-assuring in some way to know that it is not just your own system that has gone loopy! :)

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Brummie, the latest IPS update is, I'm almost certain, the cause of this.

@ozfuture2000, are you having this issue with Chrome too?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Looks like no-one does... can't believe they haven't tested against such a commonly used program.  Thank goodness I also had Chrome installed.  Ten minutes into work this morning and lost internet explorer.  Have wasted the last hour updating IE, resetting IE, disabling all the add ons etc ...   Glad I found this forum thread or wouldn't have clocked it was the Norton update wot dunnit.

I've just read the whole thread as I too have the same problem. If I leave it, will my nis update a fix and it will start working again? Even if that is in a few days?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

I am running Windows 7 and IE 11 all up to date and Norton Security Suite from Comcast.  On February 20, 2015, i notices IE 11 had 'stopped working'.  Like the other participants I did all manner of terrible things to IE to make it work; but the simplest test is to start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.  IE will function properly because Norton is completely disabled at startup. Under normal startup, you would need to back out updates that arrived this evening (a pain and not worth it), obviously inadequately tested.  I am very disappointed in Symantec.  Hope they fix this soon!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Same problem on 3 computers.  Has Norton even acknowledged there is a problem?   A little transparency might help maintain trust...

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Oh ho! Here's something. I just clicked on the "Get Support" link that was next to the failed installation error, and it actually went and did an "installation repair", after which live update DID download new IPS files and successfully install them.

Now shows as 20150221.001

The file that was 48kb is now 394kb. And IE11 seems to work without Enhanced Protected Mode!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Onthelake - Mine is old laptop was running (I am pretty sure) IE9 and Win7 home but that still crashed...:(.  Of course now it has IE11 which poss makes it more vulnerable ....but I wrongly assumed it was an IE problem and downloaded an update to try and resolve.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Have just done a manual update 1.35MB

and it is working for Windows 7 / XP

will try a few more :)

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Run live update, the problem was fixed for me, and there was no reboot required, just a very small quick live update.

It is interesting however that Symantec can take out the web browsers of MILLIONS of people with very little effort.

Who is getting fired for this one?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Temporary solution that worked for me was to downgrade IE 11 to a previous version. For me was IE 8.

I think they just patched this.   I went in disabled virus protection.  I ran a liveupdate ( I had run several just minutes before and was current)  it grabbed a new patch, and I am back in business.

This work for anyone else ?

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Hello, there is a forum at the Microsoft website for this problem.  A couple of people came up with  solution(s).  One 'solution' is to update the "Internet Options". For both Windows 7 and 8, I went to the Control Panel   and clicked the Internet Options.

Next:

1.- Go to the Advance tab

2.- Go all the way to the bottom where you see Security.

a.- For Windows 7 :  check 'Enable Enhanced protected Mode'

b.- For Windows 8:  check 'Enable 64 bit process for Enhanced Protected Mode.

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Symantec/Norton seems to have fixed the issue with an update.

To you're live updaters friends!

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

Mine's working, but only after it did an "installation repair". Not sure if that step was required, or coincidental. I started up another system with the problem to see if it would auto-repair itself without my intervention... so far it hasn't done anything, and Live Update just shows it being 3 hours old (haven't wanted to do a manual update yet).

Re: Tonight's update crashing IE11

The "Enable Enhanced Protection" fix on the 5th page of this thread worked for me.

Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Advanced/Security - Enable Enhanced Protection Mode
