I was running tor on my comp. I got a notice of a virus from Norton and abated it. Apparently, the virus identified was the tor browser. I Downloaded a new version. Norton scanned it ok. When I tried to install tor.exe , it was autoblocked as a virus. Is this a virus?

Norton 360 now detects TOR browser as a trojan in windows when tried to use it, Norton deletes tor, can symantec update 360 to recognise tor. Even if I ask Norton to ignore in resolved threats , the next time I reinstall Tor Browser it deletes it again. is there a way for Norton to allow Tor Browser as a safe program.

Same here. Fantastically annoying. Why hasn't Norton fixed this. When installing it scans and says Tor is safe. But when you try to use it says it has detected Trojan Horse and removes Tor.exe.

I've been having the same issue as you all have. TOR release 11.5.8 seems to be ok with N360, but not TOR release 12. This morning I backed off to TOR release 10.0.11 and let it update to TOR release 11.5.8 and all seems good. As of yesterday TOR would automatically update to from release 11.5.8 to release 12.0, but not today. Maybe TOR is seeing a problem with release 12?
Nevermind: TOR just updated to release 12.0 and the same problem exists with N360 killing it. I'm going to stop TOR from updating and stay at 11.5.8.

I have reported on false positive as per PeterWeb post, with tor auto updating my 11.5.8 to 12, norton360 totally crashed the browser, Tor update then tried to re-download the whole browser again, Norton would again delete the Tor.exe file, i tried to save my tor bookmarks but because Norton had broken the browser they would not save to install into older version, I have managed to download 11.5.8 and block auto update but not used as yet as read on on various sites that changing settings to notify me update available does not block auto update, you have to go into the code files and mod a couple of lines to stop updates, so tor is now unusable for all norton users, Norton has in effect blocked TOR which Norton need to rectify immediately. If someone has tried older version and is still usable by change in settings please let me know.

I have an older version 10 on my old pc from approx 1yr ago with some of my bookmarks intact, are you saying v10 does not update to v12 straight away but updates to v 11.5.8, and changing settings not to update works? that would save me a lot of hassle if that is the case?

Under TOR Settings > General you can choose "Check for Updates but let you choose to install them". This will allow you to refuse the update.

When my TOR release 12.0 did not connect to the TOR network because of N360 I was still able to export my bookmarks and then re-import them to release 11.5.8.

appreciated thanks hIh1, if old v10 only initially only auto updates to v11.5.8 as per previous comment here then i'm good to go? if not I'll have to install v11.5.8 on flash drive then open v10 on pc then save my old bookmarks then open v11.5.8 and transfer over then add anything lost

I wasn't able to save any bookmarks, got a file error caused by N360 on trying to export, I think due to Tor update trying to rectify by downloading whole browser and reinstalling over existing v12

When I saw this issue start I renamed my TORbrowser folder to "TORbrowserbak". I was luckily able to backup my bookmarks by running Firefox.exe in the "TORbrowserbak > Browser" folder and then went to "manage bookmarks" and then exported them. I just happened to have saved TOR release 10.0.11 and then installed r10.0.11 as a fresh install. I ran 10.0.11 and then immediately setup "Check for Updates but let you choose to install them" in TOR as it was already downloading v11.5.8. I let it update to 11.5.8 and then was able to say NO to 12.0. when it tried to go there. Hope this helps.
This has been my work-around. Hopefully this gets fixed and we can all move to TOR 12.0 without issues.
