Trojan-spy.win32@mx - can't remove

We purchased a new computer and had Windows Live One Care as an antivirus. This trojan infected our computer. We purchased Norton 360 2.0, but it cannot get rid of it. When I try to do a Live Update with Norton or go to Norton Security Scan, the computer says internet connection problem and will not go to it. How do I remove this?

Are you sure Norton is fully updated?

It should catch it. But let's try something.

MANUAL REMOVAL:

1. Temporarily disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP). [how to]

2. DownloadSuperAntiSpyware and save it to a desired location. It is your choice if you want to retain this software or remove it after the cleaning process.

3. After downloading, browse where the file was saved and double click to install it.

4. After installation, connect to internet and download all necessary updates.

5. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and save it to a desired location. Please print the procedure as we have to close browser later.

6. Reboot your computer in SafeMode [how to]

7. Run SuperAntispyware and do a thorough scan. Delete all infected files.

8. Close SuperAntispyware and other open Applications.

9. Run and follow the SmitfraudFix procedure you have printed earlier.

10. You may now reboot in normal mode if it does not reboot automatically.

11. After reboot, download and scan with CCleaner (Standard Build Only).

Additional Clean-Up (If Present Only):

1. Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove programs

2. Uninstall the following
- Seekmo Toolbar or just Seekmo
- AWS or Weatherbug

3. Close Add/Remove Programs after successful removal.

hi nancyfw - i'd recommend downloading Norton Security Scan on another computer and sneaker-netting it (copy to CD) it to the infected computer. a safe mode scan will probably be necessary.

Has One Care been Fully Removed from your computer?

Run LiveUpdate to Update your Norton Product and then Run a Full System Scan before trying anything else.  I would suggest doing a Full System Scan in Normal Mode and Safe Mode.

Re: Trojan-spy.win32@mx - can't remove

I have tried several things to remove this trojan, but every time I try to download a spyware program, the computer goes to a blank internet page that says "unable to connect" . It is not an internet connection problem, because I can go to any other site (ex. - ebay, yahoo, etc.) & it works. Any other suggestions?

Hi

You could try a program like DrWeb CureIt

Re: Trojan-spy.win32@mx - can't remove

A search of the virus reveals that trojan.zlob and misslead.application use this virus name to give exaggerated reports about viruses on your system.

do you have anything that looks like this on your computer

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-061114-0840-99&tabid=2

or

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-050812-3659-99&tabid=2

in that case you want to try to follow the manual removal instructions for those viruses.

Re: Trojan-spy.win32@mx - can't remove

I recently had some issues connecting with internet ETC.   I believe in my case a Malware went undetected for too long and clogged up my internet connection. I could ping things and get good responses but then other things I could not.  My cable provider said everything is fine.  I could pull an open MSN Google Yahoo internet page slowly but it would pull open and other sites like CNN or weather channel would not open at all.  What really helped me was getting a friend to download to cd all programs I wanted to use.  That way I could install them from a cd rather than a downloader.  After the bug is caught and resolved I ran a Winsock fix to fix and reset your communications.  Just make sure to disable from control panel any network connections you are not using in my case I had conflicts Example- I was on a cable modem and the winsox or malware set up my fire port connection which I do not use so both were going at the same time.  Good luck to you

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried several things. The one I finally got to work was to download the Dr. Web to a CD and run it from the CD on to the infected computer. It worked!! Thanks!!!
