Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Hi,

I have just purchased and installed Norton Security 7.5 on my MacBook Air running macOS High Sierra 10.13.

During the week I live in accomodation provided by work and do not have a wifi connection. I connect my mac to my phone's hotspot for internet to check my emails. For this reason I am very careful of the amount of data I use to save money! This means I want to turn off automatic LiveUpdate on Norton Security.

When I am home on the weekends and connected to my wifi I can then manually check for updates to ensure I stay fully protected.

I have not been able to find how to turn it off though! Surely there is a way!! Does anyone know???

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Hi,

Thanks for this article. I had read this prior to posting however I had gathered this was for PC users as I can not find the places they direct you to.

For example I cant find 'QuickControls' in my version. I can find a 'settings' tab to click on however from there I can't find 'detailed settings'. I have uploaded several screen shot of my program so you can see what i am working with.

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Hi,

Perhaps I failed to explain myself clearly in the last post. I have tried to follow these steps however I have failed to locate "Detailed Settings" as directed in step 2. In my version of the 'Settings window' i can see 'Product Settings' however when I click on this I can not find "Antivirus" as also directed to in step 2 of these instructions. I did however find a toggle switch called "Automatic Upgrades" which I have toggled to off. However this has not proven to turn off Automatic LiveUpdates.

I have then tried going directly to the "Automatic LiveUpdate" window however I have failed to locate an "On/Off switch" as directed in step 4.

Once again I have uploaded screenshots of my "Settings window" as well as my "Automatic LiveUpdate" window so you can see what I am working with.

Thanks for your persistence with my questions :)

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Emily1 I am attaching the user manual for your product. Please look at page #24 for the MAC quick menu selection.

Cheers

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Hi,

This appears to be the user manual for Norton AntiVirus. Is this a different program to Norton Security which I am running?? I am asking this as while I am reading the manual the information does not appear to be inline with my program.

When I go to page 24 the instructions state:

  1. On the Mac menu bar, click the Symantec logo.

  2. In the Norton QuickMenu, choose Norton QuickMenu > Preferences.

When I click on the Symantec logo I can not see a "Norton QuickMenu" option, or "Preference". I have uploaded another screen shot so you can see also.

I have three options: "Run Quick Scan" "Run LiveUpdate" "Open Norton Security".

If I click on "Run LiveUpdate" then it opens the LiveUpdate window which I uploaded a screenshot of in my last post. If I click on "Run Quick Scan" it scans my computer. If i click on "Open Norton Security" it opens up the program to the "Security" window. This also leads me to no options such as "QuickMenu", "Preferences" or the option to turn LiveUpdate off.

I have also tried looking for "Preference" in other places. I have tried all the other menu bar options such as "File" "Edit" ect ect. In other programs on my Mac normally there would be a "Preferences" options here where you can change settings, however it seems to be missing from this program. I have also uploaded a screen shot of the menu bar items that I do have to choose from.

I hope this information is useful for you to continue to trouble shoot this problem.

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Emily, you are correct and I attached the wrong manual last evening. Many apologies. My laptop is acting up since the Fall Creators update. Here is the link to ALL the product manuals currently available. Please choose Norton Security for MAC.

Re: Turn off LiveUpdate on Mac

Hi,

Thanks for the link :) I have read through the product manual for my product, "Norton Security for Mac".

It appears from the information in this manual that there is no option to turn off Automatic LiveUpdate.

I would love to hear from anyone who has managed to do this!

Perhaps this is an idea for the next program update?????

I have seen an increase in my daily data usage by about 90MB/day in the last two weeks since I have installed Norton Security. Of course its hard to accredit all this extra data to LiveUpdate alone as I have downloaded some new apps in this time on my iPhone. However if this rate of usage continues I have estimated it will cost me an extra $10/month - which really isn't a high cost to ensure that my computer is protected!! (Please note this is on my current Telstra plan, this costing wouldn't be the same for everyone else!)

Thanks for all your support! I hope this thread and my feedback may be useful for other people out there :)
