Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I recently renewed my Norton Security on my Android 5.1 phone. I deleted the app on my phone and sent the download link from the My Norton dashboard. Reinstalled and the app is working fine and the subscription shows the correct days left. Ever since I reinstalled though, I get these constant notices: "Norton Mobile Security is performing background operations to protect your device and data". I have Ongoing Notifications (display security status) : set to Off, and I even tried turning it on and then off again just to be sure, but I still get the notice almost every time the screen goes into sleep. I'm glad it's working in the background, but I don't need to be told constantly and have to dismiss the notice every time I pick up the phone. I never had this problem before I reinstalled the newest version.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I am not seeing this on an my Android 4.4.2, and 7.1.1 devices. What device are you using?

Try clearing the app cache and data.

Try going into the Norton Mobile Security, NMS app settings. Tap on the 3 bars at the top left of the NMS screen and tap on Settings. Scroll down to the Anti Theft section and turn off the Device Administrator setting.  Now go to Android Settings - Apps. Scroll to the NMS app and clear the app cache and app Data. Restart the device and turn the Device Administrator setting back on. This will reset your NMS to a trial version. To get the full version back, open the NMS app, tap on the 3 bars at the top left, then tap Sign In. Enter your Norton Account information and you should have the full version again.

Then test to see if things work properly.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I'm using a Moto G (first generation) running Lollipop. I tried all your steps but I still get the 'Background Operation' notice every time it sleeps. It's not a major problem, but it is annoying to have to tap to dismiss it every time I wake the phone.

Any chance you can get a screenshot of this message? In addition to the instructions for screenshots in the link below, note the section where it says the image options are not supported on a mobile device. You can email your screenshot to your PC and post it from there.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I also noticed that if I hold the notification instead of tapping to dismiss it, it adds an "i" symbol to the box. If I tap now, I'm sent to an App Notifications screen that has a selection to turn off ALL notifications for this app. I'm hesitant to do this, I do want to get notifications if the app finds malware, etc.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I have never seen that notification in NMS. Maybe try clearing the app data again, then uninstall NMS. Restart your device, then reinstall NMS and see if you still see that notification.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I have ended up here after doing a Google search for this exact same issue that started last week after an update to my Android's Norton Mobile App.  It is annoying to an extreme to have the message.....

"Norton Mobile Security

Norton Mobile Security is performing background operations to protect your device and data"

.... featuring in your Android notifications every time you look at the mobile device.  It does not "clear" when the notifications CLEAR button is chosen, you physically need to tap on the message and then it disappears. So what's the point of it?  Perhaps some bright spark wanted reassurance that the Norton security app is actually running and requested the message be shown to prove the fact? Not sure that it does reassure though, as a cynical person might suggest that it just proves that the code to constantly display the message is working .  Anyway is there a way to turn this off for those of us who don't want the nice comforting message?

Do Norton (not sure if they are involved in this community message exchange or not) know that this annoyance has occured and is there a link to a "cure" for this on the Norton web site perhaps?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I just checked a hunch I had by reinstalling my NMS on my Samsung Tab A.

Before I uninstalled, I would always see this notification when I opened the tablet.

After uninstalling and reinstalling NMS, I now see the same notification you are seeing.

So this appears to be the same notification with different wording.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I know you are responding to Mike6T, but I get the "Scan complete- No Malware Detected" notification maybe once a day. I get the "Background Operations" notification nearly every time I wake the phone. If I tap the "Scan complete" notification, the norton app opens and shows the result of the scan. If I tap the "Background Operations" notification, I just go to the home screen. So I don't think they are the same. I guess I'll try uninstall and reinstalling. It's good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this though.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Update.

After dismissing the background operation notification and allowing the tablet to sleep, as I open up the tablet again, I am back to the Scan Complete notification.

I'll check again in the morning to see if I get the second notification again.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Hi PeterWeb and DotUnit... I have rarely seen a "scan complete" notification.... usually I see "Scan in progress" (with a spinning icon) notifications... say every week over a couple of days.  That notification disappears when the notification "clear" button is used. I don't know if using "clear" stops the scan or something, but like I say, rarely have I seen "scan Complete", and certainly not once a day like DotUnit (do you see "scan in progress" messages DotUnit?) .

The  notification...

"Norton Mobile Security

Norton Mobile Security is performing background operations to protect your device and data"

...is one that has appeared in recent days, perhaps a couple of weeks, and like you have said, DotUnit, it occurs frequently during the day perhaps assocoiated with the phone going into "sleep" mode, although not always, and so maybe its set to happen "after a period of time after going into sleep mode if not re-awoken".

I would agree, DotUnit, that the "scan complete" and "performing background operations" are entirely separate notifications.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton on my phone. It seemed to have no effect. I still get the "Background Operation" notification almost every time the phone goes to sleep. I checked my Activity Log before reinstalling and the malware scan runs on my phone only once a day - if you look in the Activity Log it will show "Malware scan ran due to schedule" every time it completes. I'm assuming this is what's listed under my app settings as "Smart Scan - Automatically scans your device at the optimal time and frequency".

I didn't mention before that my desktop version of Norton Security also shows the "Background Operation" notification every time my PC is idle for about 15 minutes or so. Unlike the mobile version though, it's a small tag in the bottom right corner of my screen and it automatically disappears as soon as I move the mouse or press a key, instead of having to be clicked or tapped to dismiss. So it's easier to ignore, but either way it seems rather pointless - after telling me once that it's running in the background, why does it need to continually remind me?

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Just to note comparison with you DoUnit, I haven't seen the  "Background Operation" message on my Laptop (Windows 10), but will keep my eyes open for it!

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Just thought this may be useful:

My daughter who also has an Android (2Gens newer than mine) shares the Norton mobile subscription.  She too has started getting the Norton "Background Operation" notifications very recently.  As a contrast, my wife who also shares the Norton mobile subscription and has the exact same phone model as myself does not (yet?) get the message popping up!

Seems that this annoyance is not affecting all users equally for some reason.

I've asked my Norton contacts about this new notification, and whether we are missing something on how to disable that notification without disabling all NMS notifications.

I'll let you know what I hear.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I have been told that a new version of NMS, version 4.3.1.4255, is supposed to fix this. The update should be available on the Google Play Store. If you cannot see it yet, it should be available shortly, as new versions are released in a phased manner.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Thanks peterweb.  I have downloaded/installed the version you mentioned.  A "fix" suggests that it existed generally which is nice to know - I had begun to think it was just affecting very small minority of users!  Do you know where Norton documents recognised issues (and fixes) so that we can check there in future?

Early moments yet with the new version.  If it recurs I will certainly let you know.

I wish there were such a resource available. Even with my contacts, I cannot seem to get that information without a specific question to them.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Peterweb, Mike6T, I just noticed I have that version 4.3.1.4255. Without knowing what version I had, I ran update on app this morning when I saw Norton listed in my updates (I do them manually) And happy to say I do not see that annoying icon any more.

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

Hi peterweb / all,

I'm pleased to confirm Trezore's observation, that the issue has gone away with the installation of NMS version 4.3.1.4255. The notification has not occured since installing the update yesterday evening.

For interest, I did catch sight of a norton message flash up as a notification, but it instantly disappeared..... too quick to tell if it was this same message or not, but if it is, then "instantly disappearing" is good

Thnaks to all for contributing and especially peterweb for his help via his contacts.

Have you received the latest update to NMS, and did it stop the notification for you?

Re: Turning off constant 'background operation' notices

I didn't see the update until today, but I can confirm that the constant "Background Operation" notifications appear to have been fixed with this release. It was getting so annoying I was about to uninstall Norton on my phone and use a free service as a stopgap until they got around to a fix. Thanks to everyone who helped.
