Two Factor Authentication requires 2 phones

Tried to set up two factor authentication for my Norton account. As a default, it wants me to install an app on my phone, which I don't want. But, after providing my phone number for the authentication, it then requires a second phone number "in case the first phone is not available", or similar reasoning.

I don't have two phone numbers, which I suspect is true for many people these days without land lines.  Went on to Norton support chat for a solution, but no luck.

This seems like an unreasonable and impractical requirement in today's world.

Re: Two Factor Authentication requires 2 phones

The reason you are required to have a second method of authentication is in case your primary method is not available to you. ie you have lost your phone, or it is stolen. In this case you would be locked out of your Norton Account and there is no way to recover from that. You would have to create a new Norton Account and you would still not have access to your subscription information. Which, if you use Norton Mobile Security and want to try to locate your device, that would now be impossible because you cannot get into your account.

You can always use a friend or family member that you trust to install the VIP Access app, or allow text message to be sent to their device, so they could pass the required code when necessary. They still would not have any access to your Norton Account, because you still need to enter your account email and password before getting the VIP code from them.

FYI One reason Norton Support was not much help is that this is a Symantec product. You would have to contact Symantec support if you wanted any information about VIP Access.

Is there a forum for Symantec support?  Or how do you contact them?
