two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

On my laptop:

Edition    Windows 10 Home
Version    22H2
OS build    19045.2673
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

I am running Norton 360 Version: 22.23.1.21

And for at least 50% of the time I start up my machine, I have noted two Norton 360 icons. Surely this is not normal and does it indicate a problem somewhere?

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

The two icons has been reported a number of times here. It does not affect your protection.

You say you see this when you startup your machine. Are you using the Shutdown command? If so, you may not be getting a complete shutdown to complete any system or software updates. This could be the cause of the multiple icons. Restarting your computer usually fixes this icon issue.   Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Hi

Looking under the "choose what the power buttons do" on my W10 laptop and I have fast start-up unticked with sleep, hibernate and lock ticked. All 6 lid settings are set to sleep.

When I shut down my laptop I have always used the menu Windows/power/shutdown option. The only time I will use any other route is during issues. The only other thing I do is use hibernate through Windows/power/hibernate. Previously I was not certain if I was avoiding fast start-up. So I disabled it a few weeks ago. The attached zip file has a screenshot of my settings.

Does this suggest that fast start-up is not my issue or should I wait a while before assuming this? Any advice on how to proceed would be welcome.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

If Fast Startup is unchecked the feature is not active.

When this happens are you starting up from a previous shutdown, or are you coming out of sleep or hibernate? If sleep or hibernate, that could be causing the issue you are seeing.

If you are seeing this after a shutdown, then maybe something has gotten muddled with your Norton installation. Try opening the classic 360 interface and click on Help > Get Support. Let that run and then restart your computer and test to see if you still get multiple icons.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Hello, peterweb and thanks for getting back. To answer your question, first thing in the morning when I notice this is always from a shutdown. However, during the day I may hibernate.

So tonight I will do as you ask and remember to always shutdown when I finish. I'll post back here on Wednesday morning or sooner if anything major happens. Thx again.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Morning. - I have just started up my pc for the 2nd time today and on both occasions, I have had two icons in my system tray. I have not yet run the support tool as before but can do it again.

Do you have any advice?

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Start with the Help > Get Support as I suggested above.

If that does not work, I would suggest reinstalling your 360. Try getting a fresh install of your Norton product using the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool.    www.norton.com/nrnr   Use the Advanced Options > Uninstall Only. Then restart your computer. Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here. Then log into your Norton Account and click on the Download button. That will download and install a fresh copy of your 360. Then run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available. Then restart once more and test.

Ok. That sounds like a two parter to me. I'll do the easy bit tonight then if I need to the re-install tomorrow and report back.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

not sure if this is a help or not but doing a restart may also address the issue ( didnt see you mention this )

i think in terms of some program/softwasre updates that require a restart ( windows, etc..) to apply or complete the update

if you are not restarting often that may be a cause of the icon issue also

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

All: Clearing the system temp files and emptying the Windows\Temp directory may clear the issue. Norton has for weeks now been populating the Windows\Temp directory with tons of .dat files which could be a part of the issue. Hibernating on a regular basis will load the system with possible corrupted files which will automatically load next to a resume from hibernation occurs. The same will more than likely result with a cold start since those files are still stored in those locations for the system to use with the next cold boot. Just a thought. Below is a previous example of the Windows\Temp folder filling up.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Hello 9wood - Peterweb included that in his instructions. I do restarts as part of Windows and some application updates so I hope I'm covered for that.

I'm not sure how different that is to a shutdown and startup if I have fast-start disabled. But I certainly do one periodically.

Hi Soul Asylum.

Thank you. Will do so periodically.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

This morning (Sunday), after a startup I cleared my WIndows TEMP file and shutdown to finish. On starting up this afternoon with an empty TEMP folder I had two icons in my system tray. So, rather than keep on doing things that only may work I decided to go for a re-install. That has just been completed and I am doing a full scan which will be finished somewhat later. I will post near the end of the week how things are.

Re: two norton 360 icons in my system tray.

Thanks for the post-back. Please keep in mind that hibernation is also an issue for Norton and other software as files will become corrupted over time.
