unable to connect with Wifi after Norton update and optmization which also did a defragd

we did an update for Norton and as part of the process, Norton ran Optimization which also included a defrag. After that we were unable to connect to Wifi. checking the network connection, Microsoft said there was a connection problem and that it might be a Firewall setting. I didn't want Microsoft to reset the Firewall settings to a default without knowing more. Any thoughts? Thanks! J.

Re: unable to connect with Wifi after Norton update and optmization which also did a defragd

Hello jacksplake

Which Norton product are you using and what version please? When you install a new product, you should take some time and go over the settings. There are some settings which you can change so that the program won't do optimization and defrag. If you have a Norton product installed, then the Windows Firewall is turned off. This is the case unless you have Norton Antivirus. If you use that program, then it would use the Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall comes into play also when you are uninstall the product until you re-install the product.

Thanks

Have you restarted your computer? If you use Windows 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

If that does not help, right click on the network icon in the system tray, and choose Troubleshoot Problems.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hi jacksplake:

Your WiFi connection problem might be related to a recent Windows bug that knocks out Wi-Fi, and the majority of affected users are running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607).  Please see Woody Leonhards's 10-Dec-2016 AskWoody.com article Notification – but no explanation – for the “Wi-Fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration” bug.

Microsoft's suggested fix is as follows but there are other hints in Woody's article for affected users.

According to Woody's original 09-Dec-2016 InfoWorld article Windows 10 Anniversary Update bug drops Wi-Fi connections a similar issue has been reported by some Win 7 and Win 8.1 users and "Speculation at this point says the disconnect results when a machine performs a fast startup, setting the machine's IP address to 169.x.x.x. It's an old problem, but somehow it's come back in spades in the past two days. I have no idea what triggered the sudden outbreak, as there were no Win10 1607 patches issued on Dec. 6, 7 or 8."

If that turns out to be the cause, peterweb's suggestion <here> to disable Fast Startup should fix the problem. The Win 8.x / Win 10 Fast Startup feature has been known to cause all sorts of odd behaviour with Norton products as well (it can interfere with the normal loading of Norton services at boot-up), so it wouldn't hurt to disable this feature on your Win 10 machine, regardless.

Hi jacksplake:

Further to my previous post, Woody Leonhard has just posted an update on InfoWorld titled Windows 10 1607 patch KB 3206632 solves ‘dropped internet connection’ bug.

If you've installed your December 2016 Patch Tuesday updates (released 13-Dec-2016) and are still having issues with your WiFi connections post back and let us know.
