unable to retrieve usage data - Unknown (printer)

My printer always has  this error trying to identify any type, Mfg, Model and IP address. they are alwyas listed as identifying .... and it wont allow me to edit them without getting a big X when trying to save. I know its my printer for the MAC address. Sometimes the printer works, sometimes it shows up as offline or has communications errors and then goes offline. But it is alwys listed as UNKNOWN and a connected device. Assorted power down of printer an reset of router will usually fix it for the terms (several hours to several days). But who really want to go through that every time you want to print. Any ideas are welcome. I am trying really hard to like Core but.....

Hello again. What printer are you using, name and model info would be great to have if you'd be so kind.

Cheers

Re: unable to retrieve usage data - Unknown (printer)

thanks for asking... HP color laserjet pro M52nw

Works fine...until it stops communicating with the router. Cant help but feel that the fact that core sees it as "unknown" is an issue. By the way its ability to not correctly discover the device is exactly the same when the printer works or when it doesnt....

Re: unable to retrieve usage data - Unknown (printer)

Are you sure you got the model of the printer accurately? Maybe M252 series? I cannot find a reference for that model on HP. Also what is your OS, 32 or 64 bit? This may help as well.

YUP. Sitting 3 feet away, reading it off the front (and windows 10 64). Also several other computers all various windows. If it stops communicating with the router then obviously none of the computers can print and all see the same thing ( printer offline or communication errors). So  it is not computer dependent. It  doesnt explain why  the Core router cant ever discover it and its alway "Unknown".

Re: unable to retrieve usage data - Unknown (printer)

Ahh that explains it, you had referenced it as being HP color laserjet pro M52nw. The printer doesn't have to be connected to Core via USB to use it. My Canon MP640 is being used wireless just setting up the wireless part on the printer. Connects to the devices being used such as my laptop by adding a printer. On the Core app I manually named the maker and model and added to shared devices under managed. The type of device selected as printer.

Re: unable to retrieve usage data - Unknown (printer)

Oh gosh didnt mention it was wireless cause arent they all ?  sorry,  It actually will not let me edit the type, manufacturer or name. I get a big X pop up then it ignores  the input. So it stays Unknown but works until it doesnt.

DorkyKris. Are you tapping the pencil icon when you bring up the device to edit the device info? https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v118380566_core_en_us
