Unable to turn on Auto File Scan in NAV 11.0.3 in Mac OS 10.6.1

Hello.

I have NAV 11.0.3 installed, which is supposed to be 10.6 compatible, but I am unable to turn on "Auto-Protect".  When I click on "Configure" and turn "Auto File Scan" on and hit "OK" I get the following two error messages:

"Norton AntiVirus Error

Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not continue. Please run LiveUpdate or reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart. (Code: 10)"

"Could not load Real-Time Scanning. Make sure that it is properly installed."

I was wondering if anyone had any information about this before I attempted a reinstall of the software.  Everything else seems to be operating correctly (scanning, updating, etc.), but I cannot turn on Auto-Protect.

Thank you.

Are you using the 64-bit kernel of Snow Leopard? Norton AntiVirus only supports the 32 bit mode of Mac OS X at this time. If you have booted into 64-bit mode, try booting into 32-bit mode and see if that works.

Yes, I have my computer set up to automatically boot into 64-bit.  What is the ETA on NAV Auto-Protect working in 64-bit?

Thanks.

We are not planning on supporting 64-bit for this release of Norton AntiVirus. Apple considers 64-bit kernel support a server feature since only the Xserve boots into 64-bit by default, so our consumer products do not support this feature. Sorry.

Re: Unable to turn on Auto File Scan in NAV 11.0.3 in Mac OS 10.6.1

Hello

I think this is not the right answer because:

The Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit processor.

If your Intel-based Mac has a 32-bit processor

then Snow Leopard will run as a 32-bit system.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processors are 64-bit processors.

If your Intel-based Mac has a 64-bit processor

then Snow Leopard will run as a 64-bit system.

This has nothing to do with Mac ox X as client or Server.

Please review your opinion.

Thank you and kind regards,

Re: Unable to turn on Auto File Scan in NAV 11.0.3 in Mac OS 10.6.1

You are confusing userspace vs kernel applications. Mac OS X does not boot into a 64-bit kernel by default. You have to hold down a special key combination (6-4) or set some boot-args flags on the command line to force Mac OS X to boot into a 64-bit kernel. You can verify this by launching Activity Monitor and looking at the kernel_task; unless you forced your Mac to boot into 64-bit mode, it will say "32 bit process" next to kernel_task.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard uses 64-bit applications by default on processors that support it, but it still uses a 32-bit kernel on all machines except Xserve machines.

What you write is correct, not by default in 64 - but I forced to do so.

In this case all will run in 64 bit: processor, EFI, Kernel and  64 bit applications.

Just Norton is not 64 compatible....

Re: Unable to turn on Auto File Scan in NAV 11.0.3 in Mac OS 10.6.1

Ryan, I think the fact that OS X defaults to 32-bit mode in deference to older computers isn't the issue.  The point is that I have a 64-bit computer with a 64-bit operating system, and the only reason I can't run it that way is because what is supposed to be the best-in-breed antivirus software tells me I'm not protected if I do so.  So I'm supposed to run everything else in degraded mode just because of NAV?

Hi

Thank you. Nice.

Another way to try to explain what is going on.
