Understanding which ports Norton Internet Security enables/disables...

Hi everyone,

Just wanting to see if there is a dialog window or section which displays all ports which are controlled by Norton Internet Security and whether it is possible to alter there status? I'm currently having issues with connectivity with some apps, namely Outlook and OpenDNS update client. It is likely possible that the ports which they use are currently blocked by the app.

cheers

The Norton Product Tamper Protection feature would now allow you to change any port settings. If you could do it, so could some malicious code if it did manage to get into your system.

Are you having these connection issues when using 360's VPN feature? Many web sites do not allow access from known VPN IP addresses. They do this for copyright, legal, and political reasons. There is nothing a VPN provider can or should do to circumvent these legal protections. This can include your email provider blocking  VPN IP addresses to protect your account.

If you are not using the VPN, you can start by resetting the Norton Firewall to see if that will resolve your issues. To reset the Norton firewall, from the classic Norton Security screen click on Settings - Firewall. On the General tab, click on Reset beside Firewall Reset. Restart your computer. As you use programs that access your network/internet, the firewall rules will be created again.

Re: Understanding which ports Norton Internet Security enables/disables...

Hi there, thanks for the indepth reply. I am however using NIS 2007, and since then updated on yearly subscription. The interface has pretty much stayed the same. The info you gave me doesn't appear on my screens. I am given a dialog - ''Internet Security and Firewall Options'', but not port listings. i did click Reset Firewall button, but still no cigar. This was within Settings>Options>Additional Security and Firewall Options (dialog window)> Personal Firewall>Advanced Settings > Reset Firewall I have also used the internal Windows >netstat /a /n command to display ports. but i'm not sure whats going on with the outlook/opendns apps (NOT openvpn) not working. In order to test if the NIS app is at fault, I even turned OFF ALL Basic Security/Web Browsing/Email & Messaging options within the settings section.Set them to restart after system restart. Still no cigar. I can't seem to link up, but everything else is working... so I believe. Any other sugguestions other than updating OS/NIS? WinXPSP3 with NIS 2007 with latest updates. cheers
