An unknown service ... is starting on your Mac

Since installing a newly-purchased copy of Norton Security, I am getting a message every time I boot.  It is the phrase in my title above, with a four-digit number in parentheses.  I am given four options for dealing with the "service", one of which is, "Allow all connections to this server".  Another is to leave the firewall as it is.  My problem: why am I getting these warnings?  What might the source ("service") be and is it something to worry about?  I don't know which option to choose because I have no idea what sort of service is starting.  My only guess is that it may have something to do with Apple's cloud that somehow connects to my computer(s).  Any enlightenment would be most welcome.  I am running Mac OS X 10.11.

Thanks

Re: An unknown service ... is starting on your Mac

Thanks. Others have different port numbers, such as 3325.

I really appreciate your offer of help.

Re: An unknown service ... is starting on your Mac

Hi Books, let's try to find out what's happening.

- Open terminal, you can find it faster through spotlight

- Try this command in terminal: sudo lsof -i 4:3325 (or any port where you have problem)

- Enter your password if asked

- Send the output. Just for an example, I'm sending you the output of my 8118 port, where I have a personal proxy running

The first line, where you can read "(LISTEN)", you have the process witch is trying to open the port (using your example, 3325) and in the first column the name of process.

Please, send me the output.

Re: An unknown service ... is starting on your Mac

So, do you have any idea of why I am getting the messages, if you are as new to Norton Security as I am?  Incidentally, the choices provided are :

Allow all connections to this service.

Allow local network connections

Deny all connections to this service.

Don’t change firewall settings.

Thanks,

John

Re: An unknown service ... is starting on your Mac

It depends... First of all you have to identify which service is trying to open this port. If it is authentic, so you can allow all connections or local.
