Unknown volume found by Norton Power Eraser

Hi.

Later scans by NPE disclose an a: drive, i.e. a:\Restore.exe. I can't find the a: volume (or the file) on my PC.

Is this some temporary issue connected to the NPE scanning?

Are you using Win 10?

Have you checked Disk Management. On Win 10, right click on the Start button, and then click on Disk Management. You will need to be using a Windows Admin account.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Unknown volume found by Norton Power Eraser

I'm using Win10, 64 bit and Norton 360 Premier 22.8.0.50

Disk Management shows:

Disk 0, two empty "Recovery Partition" (both w/o name and, 100% free space), "(C:)" and "System Reserved".

Nothing named a: though.

Furthermore, as the two "Recovery Partition" are empty there shouldn't be any "Restore.exe" in any of those(?).

If you search on Windows 10 recovery partition, these are created by the Win 10 install. Here is one link with info on this.

OK, it explains the unnamed Recovery Partitions - but, not that an a: volume suddenly appeared in later NPE scans.

I have never seen it ( or, have I missed it?) before when NPE scanning.

Would You, or any other Guru, suspect foul play?

Re: Unknown volume found by Norton Power Eraser

Did you see any reference to an a: drive in Drive Management? or any unidentified drives?

NPE can be a dangerous tool. It can find things that could leave your system unbootable.

Can you run NPE again, and post a screenshot of the message about the a: drive. Do not allow NPE to change anything.

Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

Re: Unknown volume found by Norton Power Eraser

No reference to an a: drive and two unnamed "Recovery Partition" (see earlier posting).

The a: volume I've seen is not reported by NPE. It just flashes by during scan - but, when I feel a need for NPE scanning I've noticed some peculiar/uncommon behaviour. I then carefully follow the scanned items in the NPE pane.

Therefor I can't post any screenshot (You'd to be very fast to catch it - it's a matter of seconds).

Furthermore, I don't find any logs or so either.

It could be similar to the regular scans in Norton products. It is showing what it is looking for, not what it has found.

@00360:

Then you try this: search your hard diskS thoroughly: Open File Explorer > View tab > Options > View > enable "show hidden..." and uncheck "Hide protected..." option below > search Restore.exe > upload it virustotal.com > share the link here.
