Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

Hi everyone,

Thank you for using Norton Identity Safe!

Every now and then products have to adapt to take advantage of big technology changes.  In the last few years, major browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari) have converged on a common way to package and run highly capable browser extensions.

To adapt to this change, we decided to rebuild Identity Safe from the ground up and made deliberate decisions based on our deep experience of securing your identity.

Our new design aims to give you a new view of all your vault items, with fast searching, viewing and editing.

By building on modern, standardized browser extension technology, we are now able to support browsers and operating systems - like Edge on Windows 10 and Safari on Mac - that were not available with the previous version of Norton Identity Safe.

Also with this design, we are now able to roll out more frequent fixes, improvements, and new features to all types of browser users on all platforms together.

We apologize for any inconvenience due to the new Identity Safe extension and want to let you know we are listening and working hard to improve – we hope you stick with us for our new developments!

With the new design comes some changes we'd like to highlight as well as some comments on what we are doing in the future:

  1. You still access your same online vault, but with some differences in how it’s done:
    • Signing in to your vault uses the same Norton Account and vault password as before, but doesn’t use the Norton Security interface.  You'll see some new screens from our extensions asking you for this information when you sign in.
    • You will need to supply your vault password each time if you completely close and restart Chrome.
    • We recognize and understand that this is a new experience - we are looking at future updates to make this process smoother - stay tuned!
    • You cannot access a local vault on Chrome with this extension.  We recommend converting local vaults to online vaults.  If you want to keep using the local vault, it is still available for now from Internet Explorer or from the main Norton Security interface.
  2. Form filling looks and behaves a little differently
  • Identity Safe now shows a pop-up in web pages (or you click on a small Norton badge icon) and can simply click on the login item you’d like to use.
  • This change from the previous Identity Safe design looks small, but is a powerful way to ensure that you are in full control of choosing which login to fill and when to do it.
  • We wanted to make sure the only way a website sees your login from your vault is when you take a definite action (that extra little click).

Q1. Does Identity Safe still work on Internet Explorer?

Yes.  If you see a prompt when opening your vault to migrate your Chrome extensions, please follow through on doing that (or uninstall Chrome if you are no longer using it) and you'll be able to open your vault in Internet Explorer.

Q2. I've tried to update my Identity Safe on Chrome but still can't open my vault on Internet Explorer - why?

See here :https://community.norton.com/en/forums/upgrade-your-identitysafe-extension-message-workaround

Q3. What is happening with the Norton Security Toolbar?

Our Norton Security Toolbar uses browser technology that Chrome has announced will be removed in the future – see more information here:
https://blog.chromium.org/2017/05/goodbye-pnacl-hello-webassembly.html
https://developer.chrome.com/native-client/migration

Our initial steps were to release our updated Norton Identity Safe extension.

We also saw this change as an opportunity to give a better experience and usability of your websites by removing the space taken up by your toolbar.  Don’t worry, it is still active and helping protect your online activities.

Coming soon, we will release an update to your Norton Security Toolbar that will refresh the experience of the toolbar:

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

Thank you Mohan! Your post I believe is what we all needed in the first place to understand the reason for the change with Norton Identity Safe.

I believe if you had prepared me for the change in advance it would have been less of a headache. You caught me so off guard and I actually ended up "restoring" my desktop computer causing me to lose everything. Your sudden change had me thinking something was corrupt in my computer. Worse of all with this misunderstanding I lost my personal website which I had stupidly not backed-up.

The hours of frustration were not good for someone who already has an anxiety disorder like me....lol. Norton often has pop-ups with important messages to their customers which could have been used to guide us with an explanation similar to your current one.....I suspect it would have been a great service to us all and we would have been more accepting.

I have seen a great improvement in the past week of your new Identity safe but it still has away to go before it works more smoothly. Removing the tool bar was a great idea as it was taking up a lot of space.

I believe in Norton and have been with you for years and hopefully I will be for many more but PLEASE give your customers advance warning before making major changes. Thanks, James.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

Why would I buy Norton Identity Safe when Chrome will remember passwords for me?  This is a stupid change.  I should still be able to use the program that constantly runs in the background. I think there is a huge disconnect between you people and the real people that use Identity Safe. Who keeps their browser open for more than a few seconds?  Today, in 2018, you open web-pages in separate browser windows on a regular basis, this means I need to type my password every single time I need to access one of my over 100 accounts.  It's bad, it's stupid, and it feels like no one did any research.  The community wants to log in ONE TIME while Norton Security is running the background, and have all our passwords automatically filled in when we hit the page in every new browser window we open.  You've lost a customer here unless this is fixed.  You aren't the only anti-virus suite on the web but you were the best password manager.  Now that's gone, and so are we.

Hey Your_Future_Ex,

Apologies for the frustration. Believe me we've heard you. I am one of the engineers on the team and we are working super hard on fixing this problem. This is one of the top concerns as well.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

While it's good to hear you are working on resolving the constant log in issues, wouldn't it have been better for your customers to wait to until this was in place to roll out such a disruptive change?

Like many here I have decided to go elsewhere for a password manager and as soon as my subscription ends I will be moving away from Norton (believe me it is harder to get a customer who has moved to return than to lose one you already have), I don't think you should be treating customers as beta testers and expecting us to wait until you fix issues you created.

I tried the workaround to get past the pop-up and open my vault in IE.  I still get the pop up. Please fix this.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

To say I'm frustrated with the changes to Identity Safe, is a great understatement. I made a contract with Norton to keep my passwords and computer safe. You (Norton) farmed out several security tools to 3rd party vendors with which I have no experiences or assurances that they can keep my information safe. I have not and will not use theses extensions. I will instead manually enter passwords using the Identity Safe tools directly from the Norton Security program. This is extremely aggravating and a waste of my time!

When it comes time to think about renewing services with Norton, I may decide not to purchase again. You can rest assured that I will talk about this issue with all of my friends.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

This "update" is a DEAL BREAKER.  You have definitively lost a paying customer.  For YEARS I have renewed because I loved Identity Safe.  Now it is horrible.  It takes 7 (SEVEN) clicks to log in to my AOL mail when it used to take ONE.  You have ruined a great product.  Your above statement does nothing to give hope it will be as user friendly as the past product.  When my subscription expires I'm moving on to better Internet Security programs and a free password manager that is at least as user 'friendly'.  BAD JOB Norton.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

So we have workarounds uninstall Chrome if you are not using it copy all your Chrome short cuts and data install as basic installation so you can use Vault in IE or even from the control centre really ! come on lets have a fix on live update I am sure somebody somewhere is working hard to sort out this mess and believe me it is a mess !. What a pity that all this hard work that somebody is now doing wasn't applied to the update  say for instance in testing ! before we were all left in the ....!

No body has had the decency to get back to me over this Emails, Posts, Phone calls. Have been a Norton customer for 20 years.

Here's what happened to me !

How to destroy a product send out an update that renders it nearly useless.

On the 9th of March tried to open Norton Identity Safe from the Norton Control Panel splash screen saying Chrome needs the Identity safe extension updating. Click button says update successful try to open from control panel again same screen, click update again successful. Back to control panel up pops same screen !.

I also use IE as Chrome is buggy on some sites but can no longer use Identity safe in IE as yep you guessed it up pops that update screen again.

Identity Safe in Chrome opens though? does it fill in users name and passwords NO of cause it doesn't !

on my machine I have loads of backup sets configured Files and folders backing up to different drives so very important to me and work. Would take hours of work to set up again.

so contact Norton Support on line made the fatal mistake of letting them take control of my machine.

Told him not to do anything that would delete backup set configuration.

That's OK he said they will still be there. I am trying to keep this as short as possible but I am fuming.

So Mr Support runs app that completely removes Norton Internet Security Premium from my machine.

Then re-installs guess what yep all my Backup set configurations have gone.

he opens Identity Safe In Chrome says fixed just reboot your machine.

So reboot machine and same issues and NO backup sets configured !

I have emailed Norton in Reading with the problems I now have a week later No! reply.

Hey Norton any chance of a fix to the update that doesn't work and rendered Identity Safe almost useless

Have been a customer and used Norton for over 20 years first time that I will really consider if renewing my subscriptions are worth it.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

I can't get my local safe to work at all now, good job norton! not in ie, not in chrome, and as it's been for a long time not in firefox, do have a back up of my passwords but why can't you people understand the need for a person to protect there own passwords, is there something wrong with you guys as a company? it's never been a more worst time to store passwords in the cloud. let me manage my own stuff.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

My big problem with this update is there is no visual indication whether I'm signed into the vault or not.  I see I can do a hard exit out of chrome, and that signs me out, but that's not how I normally close a window, I use the 'X' to close it.  So I see this as a security risk in that someone using the computer right after me may get access to the vault without my  knowledge.

Hope you feel better, now. That is the most that can come from your rant...

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

Ok, a small amendment.  I now see I can close the vault by 1. clicking the NIS icon, 2. clicking the ellipsis, and 3. clicking close vault.  And the NIS icon does get slightly darker when the vault is open, but the change is barely noticeable.  It would be nice to have it really stand out, like making it red.  I can see how most just want it open all the time and it's not an issue, but if the computer is used by multiple people, leaving it open is a concern.  An option to close the vault when the window closes would be nice. Maybe this is the wrong thread for these suggestions (not rants).

Symantec have been 'improving' the Norton Identity Safe / Vault from about NIS11 days on until it has been reached a point where it is useless to me and I will not use it.  Great work Symantec!

You are probably not receiving any reply because Norton does not do support via email any more. If you are using an old email address you may have used in the past, it is probably not monitored any more.

With this update I can no longer log into sites with Identity Safe in Chrome.  I can see the icon in the upper right but it's greyed out like I'm logged out. I can click on it to see my log ins but when I actually go to the sites in my vault they do not auto fill. In the fields to fill out my passwords and user names the Identity Safe icons are greyed out too and I cannot click on them to initiate a fill in

I use internet explorer also but hat works fine. If there is something I'm missing please let me know.

It is not greyed out. That is just the color Norton chose for the icon.

Same comment for greyed out. That color is the way it was designed. But you should be able to click on the icon to bring up any login choices.

What version of the Chrome ID Safe  extension do you have. If you still have the older  v1.0.5, you should disable or remove that as it can conflict with the new extension, v 5.x.x.x.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

I updated to 5.2.2.19. As for the grey Identity Safe icon color, Norton uses that to show that your vault is closed. At least it's been that way for 5 years or so that I've had Norton. When you unlock your vault it turn that yellow/gold color. Not sure if there is some conflict as to why when the vault is open in chrome for some reason it's not "acting" like it's open. I can click on the I.S. icon and see my vault.

The color of the icon isn't really the issue, it's since the update Identity Safe doesn't work. The icon shows my vault stuff now but it doesn't fill in when I access sites that are in my vault.

Yes. That was then, this is now. The new extensions changed that some time ago. If you were still using the older Chrome extension v 1.0.5, you would have seen the old indications on the Norton Toolbar.

I just checked and see that when the vault is open, the icon is still grey, just a little darker shade of grey.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

The color of the icon is more cosmetic than function. The issue is more of lack of functionality of the updated extension that I'm having for some reason. Is there a way to go back to the older version until this is fixed ? I'd rather have a working extension rather than having to fix something that wasn't broke.

Kudos0

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

If you no longer see the v 1.0.5 for ID Safe, there is no way to go back. If you do still have it, be sure you disable the new v 5.x.x.x.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

My comment isn't to add anything material to this conversation...except to reiterate what EVERYONE has said above. This isn't just happening when I close Chrome. (Or do they mean each time you close a TAB/open a new tab?)

You fixed a "problem" that wasn't broken.  WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY would you create an "enhancement" that forces the user to waste time logging in over and over and over again? I open and close tabs all the time. OCCASIONALLY I close Chrome altogether but for the most part I just leave it open and open/close tabs as necessary.

We just want to log in once and not have to bother with NIS again for the duration of the computer's being on or until we choose to log out. We want to be able to eyeball the icon and CLEARLY be able to tell if we're logged in or not.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE change these two things back! The annoyance and amount of time wasted is really souring me on the product, which I used to love.

Well the question is Who's done what ?

I have had the Identity Safe issue since 9th March have put my comments on the complete and utter sorry story of the downgrade Sorry Upgrade that Norton thought would make my experience so fantastic using Identity Safe. Its been something beginning with the letter F but fantastic is not my first choice of words as since the 9th March haven't been able to use it along with many others it seems and being told to remove Chrome to get it to work was the icing on the cake must admit that the meetings I have attended over this that one did cause a lot of laughter so thanks for that one Norton.

Back to "Well the question is Who's done what ?"

This Morning 25th March after a live update three updates installing. I tried Identity Safe and it opened from the Norton Control Panel tried from IE that opened as well so now for a login to a secure website nope no auto fill blank text fields.

But hey I can access my vault a start a least so my Norton Friends have you sent a sort of a fix out or have I just been lucky ?

If you have great if not how lucky am I :) but for how long is the million dollar question.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

I'm a bit puzzled since once I log into the ID Safe vault on one tab it is open and stays open on all tabs and windows, so I don't need to log in again.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

BUT the Icon needs to be red so I can see I'm at risk if I leave my computer running for someone else to use.

And I would like an auto logout if I leave the computer for an adjustable period, in case I forget to log out.

And now I need Chrome running to view my vault

Is there any chance of an option to revert to the old ID Save?

Norton has created a nasty monster with this "upgrade".  Two of my four computers freeze when I try the UPGRADE NOW on the Identity Safe pop-up.  Task Manager will not remove the pop-up, leaving the computer frozen.  I may be better off to ditch Norton.  I am scared to try UPGRADE on others, so I don't use the feature.

What a flipping mess!  Identity Safe is now Identity Nightmare.  This is it for me and Norton and I've been a subscriber for a very long time.  I can't stay logged in.  The function on the actual Norton app is useless.  I have to log in constantly.  What a disaster this has become.  Shame on you.  You guys majorly screwed up what used to be a good product.  I'm so angry right now that I'm considering deleting Norton and going to a different program.  McAfee here I come.

Just shut off my automatic renewl on my account.  Unfortunately, I'm subscribed through April, 2019.  Doesn't matter to me though.  I'm ditching this nightmare.  You guys just bought the farm.

Why hasn't this program been restored to how it used to be?  Either that, or admit that Identity Safe in Norton Security is completely useless and take it out so at least we have closure and move on to other programs competent enough to not make these kind of mistakes.  This is the most aggravating thing I've ever seen a company do to it's paying customers, is there a way to get a refund?

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

First off the new extension doesn't fill in the login fields (they are left blank) which means it doesn't work (Yes I tried the new Update 5.2.2.19).

Second I want to sign in once and not have to do so over and over after closing or restarting chrome.

I login to the identity safe on Norton security and that is it I have been transferring my logins to chrome because the new extension doesn't fill anything in (the fields are left blank) and because I don't want to waste time doing the same thing over and over again. When I login to identity safe on Norton Security I should not have to login again on the browser I prefer using namely chrome especially over and over again when I close the browser. Internet explorer works well with signing into the Norton Security but I try not to use it except with sites that are not compatible with chrome there are only a few of these  so I guess I will be using the password manager in chrome.

Please have the extension access the identity safe in norton security and correct the fact that it doesn't fill in the login fields on most sites.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

I sure wished I had know this before I recently renewed.  I agree with the majority of the posters.  I do not want my information in the cloud.  I want it on my computer and under my control.

One of the main reasons I have continued to purchase Norton is for the Identity Safe.  Now it is just frustration.  I either have to leave my browser open all day or login every time to check email.  The first option is not what I would call secure.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

Let me add my voice to the complaints about requiring you to log in to the vault each time you open Chrome. This is unacceptably tedious.

A friend, to whom I had recommended Norton ID Safe and is not at all computer comfortable, had been using it for a year when you suddenly made this change. It threw her for a loop.  I had not yet updated ID Safe and wasn't sure about what had changed until recently when my system was updated.  I have to tell you that this is NOT the way to handle this. It is a real drag. You really should consult some of the typical users about usability before releasing stuff like this to your user base.  I'm pretty sure the way it requires repetitive logins would have been the foremost complaint. You need to listen to your users if you want to continue to sell your product.  I can't imagine that business users are happy with this either and they are probably your most profitable targets.

Although some small business users will use Norton products, Norton is generally aimed at home users for set and forget protection of their systems. Larger businesses require much more control and are more likely to go with the Symantec line of products.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

It's been just over 3 weeks since my last post and I wanted to follow-up on it. Hopefully Norton knows now that they made a VERY big mistake of not letting their customers know in advance they were making major changes to Norton Identity Safe.

I lost my website of many years because of them keeping us in the dark, but....... some good did come out of it for me. I am rebuilding my website and it's looking great. The other website had gotten old and outdated!

Anyway, I have a personal message for Norton.....

I just want to let you know you've been doing a great job these past few weeks in getting the kinks out of the new "Norton Identity Safe" programming!

I have no problem with having to sign-in each time I open Chrome. I know you are doing it for our own safety and that is the main reason for your product.

Over the weeks I have found that Norton Identity Safe will populate my user-names and passwords at almost lightening speed. My bank and other sites where I pay bills has gotten fast!

One problem though has been Yahoo Mail. They require first a user-name then it goes to another page requiring the pass-word. I have two accounts and each time I try to sign-in into one of them and I click the "key hole" the username and password will disappear quickly and boy does that get frustrating. I feel like I am in a race! Sometimes I will refresh the page a few times and the "key hole" will allow me to click the user email and pass on quickly to the password page and stay still long enough for me to click the password. I'm not sure what I said here makes sense but long story short......

Norton, keep doing what you're doing because it is making a difference for the better! Now that I see what you're doing I can understand why you're doing it and I'm liking it (even though I hate change....lol).... -James-

my new computer was the fastest computer i have ever used, i wont get into the specs but suffice to say it is way beyond what the average user has in the desktop or laptop.

the Identity safe update killed it, instantly, the moment i loaded this forced update i now have one of the slowest computers on the planet, the product is a pain in the rear, websites load like i am using a 486, that's no joke,  constantly asked to log into the id safe, once logged in i have to tell it i don't want to save a new login every time even though i have not changed the login, every website has a pop up no matter how many time i tell it no thanks, when you click on the ID safe icon to load you credentials on a website they disappear instantly you literally have to be the fastest human on the planet to even be able to click it and get your login loaded, if you miss it then you have to reload the website to get another opportunity.

I am so pissed off, i am tired of getting frustrated and screaming at my computer

I am about to cancel my six licenses i have with norton.

I would delete Norton off your computer and see if that's the problem.  Identity Safe is completely worthless now and the devs/ programmers could not care less about their mistake.  I would love to have a conversation face to face with one of these people that obviously gets paid way too much to work on such a significant piece of software that many millions use, I would have some choice words.  I won't re-up with these jokers.  It's apparent there is a major disconnect between the user functionality and whoever comes up with their lame-brained ideas.  I feel like if I worked for Symantec, they'd make so much more money by NOT doing just a single stupid thing like this because I would be there to immediately squash the ignorance.  HORRIBLE, horrible job they're doing.

It appears that the site info available from the Chrome toolbar icon is read-only. I just figured this out myself.

To edit the site information you will need to use the Norton Security Icon and access the Identity tab.  I have windows. The Norton Security Icon looks like a yellow bullseye with a checkmark. I have it on my task bar at the bottom of the screen. You may have to look in the hidden icons displayed with the chevron/caret at the right of the taskbar. This will pop-up a list of hidden icons.

Open Norton Security then click on the Identity tab. You should see Identity Safe at the left. Open that and log in if you need to.  Once you do that you can find all your site info and edit it.

Re: Update on Norton Identity Safe changes on Chrome

To edit a login from the new extensions, open your vault in the new extension. Then click on the ID Safe icon on the browser address bar and then click My Vault at the bottom left. When you are taken to the ID Safe website, find the login you wish to edit and click the gear icon at the bottom left of the login. Then click on Edit.

I can edit all the fields from the Norton Safe toolbar. Click the icon, click "My vault", scroll down to the one you want to edit, click the name, then all the fields are presented and can be edited. Click Save when finished editing.
