Utilities Premium Update

I got a popup saying there was an update for Utilities Premium. I clicked to do the update. I think it was the next day I got the same popup and updated again, thinking maybe the first one didn't work. I keep getting those popups.

Now I'm wondering if those popups are really from Norton (they look like they are) or if it is a hacker phishing for my information. I should have taken a screenshot today before I closed it. My bad

Can someone tell me if Norton put out that many updates for Utilities Premium in such a short time, especially since they are going to be ending it soon?

The Utilities update did seem to work OK. I guess I need to go to Microsoft and try to get the Windows 10 update to work.  Never did figure anything out for when Norton said there was a problem with this laptop. I ran utilities again, problems were found and repaired. Thanks for all your help.

I got an update to NUP a couple of days ago to ver 21.4.4.356. So the message does sound legitimate. 

Have you restarted your computer since applying the update? Restart, not shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.

I have to do a hard restart a couple times a week because my laptop lockups when I try to sign in . An upgrade of Windows 10 has been attempted many times but always fails. I updated the BIOS for Lenovo but that didn't help either. I don't know anything about Fast Startup.

Sounds like you need to sort out your Windows installation before working on other software issues.

Click on Start and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click on Run as Administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check your Windows installation and try to correct any errors it finds.

I ran the sfc/scannow, it found errors. I clicked on the DISM site but it said it could not be found. I added "to" between how and use but that didn't work either. I went through the "Updates" and it said that I am missing important security and quality fixes. I click on Check for updates. It appears to be checking and then goes back to the same screen.

I ran the troubleshooter twice. The second time it said that it found nothing. I went back through settings to Windows update and checked for updates. Same as before. I could not find anything that works through Windows help or Microsoft. Why won't it find the update and install it?

Also, when I logged into Norton it notified me that I had a problem with this laptop. I brought up Norton security for this laptop and it said it was OK. I ran the checks anyway but still nothing. Is there some deeper issue with my laptop that won't show up?

I just tried the link I gave for the DISM and it worked for me. Try again, maybe with a different browser.

When SFC found errors, was it able to fix them? 

You say you are having issues with Windows updates. Any chance you manually turned off Windows Defender services? If so, turn them back on because they are required for Windows updates to work.

This time the link worked. For CheckHealth I got the response ERROR:87 Online/Cleanup-Image'/CheckHealth option is unknown. When I brought up the logs they meant nothing to me. I took printscreens of what I did and the results. Well I tried to but they weren't saved. I am not sure if SFC corrected errors. I assumed it did, I don't remember seeing anything to click to fix them Windows Defender says it is being controlled by Norton . The second line about incoming is blocked in each section. When I tried DISM.exe/? It gave me a bunch of information that I couldn't make any sense of.

SFC does not give you anything to click on. I just reports whether if found issues, and if it was able to fix them or not. 

Did you try the different DISM options noted from the link I gave? Be sure you are using the complete command noted for each option. ie  

"DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth"  From the error message, is sounds like you did not include "DISM" at the beginning of your command.   I find it best to use copy/past for these commands.

I ran SFC again. It said that it found no integrity violations. I only tried the checkhealth option as the article said to do them in order. I can't copy/paste into or out of the command window. I had tried that before also. And I cannot take a screenshot of that window. I double checked the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/Checkhealth command in that window and it is exactly right. It didn't include DISM in the error message though. I ran healthcheck again. Same result and it still did not include DISM in the error message.

When you open the command prompt are you opening as administrator? That allows me to copy and paste. 

If typing manually, you need to ensure you are paying attention to any spaces included in the link.

I always open the command prompt as administrator.

I didn't notice any spaces in the command so I didn't enter any spaces.

I ran all three of the DISM commands (with spaces it works much better). I got:

First no corruption-successful

Second no corruption

Third operation completed successfully

I ran SCF 3 times. First time corrupt files- successfully repaired. The second and third times- no integrity violations.

I will shut it down tonight, run a Norton scan in the morning and then try to update Windows 10 again.

Norton scan found no issues. I tried to update Windows 10 again but it failed again. Should I have done a hard shutdown?

As noted in my first post about Windows Fast Startup feature, as long as you used the Windows Restart feature, that is the same as a hard shutdown as far as a complete restart of the operating system.

As long as you have figured out the use of Restart to get your system fully updated, are you still seeing the issue with the Norton Utilities update not completing? If so, maybe you should uninstall it and get a fresh install from your Norton Account.

Is it just one specific update that keeps failing, or all updates?  If just one, try searching for that specific update failing.
