Vault

I think it needs to be noted that a Local Vault still means your passwords are stored on the Cloud.

I asked this in Norton support:

I have a local vault.  Where are my passwords stored

Reply: On the Cloud Server.

But wait I didn't want my private passwords for everything on a cloud server and expected them to be safe

on my local computer.

For that I got a spiel on the safety of their Cloud Server.

So why is it called a LOCAL VAULT. However you look at it...that is completely misleading.

Like Microsoft, Google and Apple....just TRUST US seems to be their answer to the pitfalls of the Cloud.

Ya right, in a pigs eye I TRUST anyone with MY PRIVATE information.

What I see is a STORMCLOUD that is becoming the new Virus. No information is going to remain private.

I expected MUCH better from Norton.

Quick....get everything personal off your computer. Windows 10 StormCloud. The O.S. *which may as well be a Virus* Norton is just another example of the Cloud Phenomenon so don't expect it to help. Norton Local Vault has been phased out, Norton Cloud Vault (Norton Cloud Server) phased in. No alternative. What the CLOUD Phenomenon really means: More information about you going OUT than information coming in. You can't even trust Norton anymore thanks to them pushing your PRIVATE information to CLOUD and taking away LOCAL vault choice.

Re: Vault

I think the support person is wrong. As far as I know it is only stored on your system in the IDDStor2.dat file.

See this tutorial on backing up and restoring the Local Vault.

At a minimum you should save a copy of the IDDStor2.dat file incase you have a failure and have to clean install or move it to a new system.

Re: Vault

Would not surprise me at all but, 2 separate calls, 2 separate support staff and both claim Local Vaults are being eliminated.

At this point local would still work but for me but deleted it and I have no intention of Cloud Based Vault.  Avoiding Cloud everywhere possible but getting harder and harder to do.

I have backed up (exported) the .dat file and a .csv copy as well.  Don't intended to use the vault but at least I have a readable .csv copy of all my passwords. I relied on the Vault way too heavily and had forgotten many of them. :)

Windows 10 is so bloody.....STORMCLOUD based I have it on 1 computer for specifically watching it degrade and the others on Win 7 and Ubuntu.

Refused to use Google for past 6 months on my computers, stripped down to minimum Google options on Smartphone and Tablets.

Nothing and no options even remotely suggests to me computers are Safe/Secure/Better with the Cloud.  Unless you are a Cloud provider of course.

Trust Us!   When pigs fly!

Re: Vault

With all due respect to the Support people, they are working from scripts. The users here have hands on experience with the ID Safe feature. If you do have a local vault, it is NOT in the cloud. It is as the name implies...local. Stored in the IDDStore file noted by PhoneMan above.

Re: Vault

Paul :      I am looking to change web vault to local vault
Allen:      Thank you. If you are using the latest version of Norton program, Local vault option is not available. The Local vault option is only applicable for previous version of the Norton program.
Paul :      that is ridiculous. How can I backstep to a previous version for the remainder of the time on my Norton accounts.
Allen:      I understand. No worries, you can use the same product key in the event that you wish to install the previous version. No need to purchase a different product key.
Allen:      For your convenience, I can remotely access your computer using a secure connection so that I can help you with the process.
Paul :      no thanks. Quickly losing trust with Norton.  Just an address to download the previous version please
Allen:      I understand. If you are using Norton Internet Security you can download it's previous version thru this link: http://norton.com/oldnis . If you are using Norton 360 you can download it's previous version on this link: http://norton.com/oldn360

Note: I have confirmed this information. Norton is moving the Vault to Cloud only.  Those who have Local Vault will eventually be forced over via updates/upgrades. When completed, ALL customers Vault/info will be held on their servers. aka: Norton Cloud

The agent is correct, as far as they went. With the latest versions of Norton products you can no longer create a local vault. But if you already have a local vault, you can just use that, as long as you are careful when upgrading your Norton Product. As long as you have never set up a cloud vault, all the data is still on your computer.

As to being forced to use the cloud vault. That may come at some time in the future, but there has been no indications that that is coming any time soon.

For the ink yank gave above, try it again. I just tried it and it worked correctly for me.

Re: Vault

not sure what you mean, no indicators.

Traditional methods vs. not non-traditional methods as a work around.

Cannot create a Local Vault.

Cannot change Cloud Vault to Local.

Seems to me the indicators are already there.

Thanks.  Still not getting that link to work.

Odd.  Have tried on several computers, using several browsers. Even tried pasting the link into the browsers.

Re: Vault

The indicators are there that Norton wants users to use the cloud. My point was that so far there is no indication that local vault users will be forced to convert to the cloud.

For the link, try this. It should be the same, but who knows

Re: Vault

This worked and recovered my local vault for me today.

Just passing the info on.

On the PC with a Local Vault:
1.In Windows Explorer, make sure that the ‘Show hidden files and folders’ option is selected.
2.Navigate to following folder: C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_21.1.1.7\IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21-1596595386-3307766018-3340439378-1000. Note that some components of the path above will be system dependent eg product version number and the last folder in the path. Each user on the system will have their own folder with a -100n suffix (eg -1000 above). You need to select folder that contains your local vault (usually denoted with a padlock overlay on the folder icon) or you can check the Security property of the folder to see if your user id has full control over the folder.
3.In the folder above, copy the following three items to a USB drive or network location:

 bcd9d034b0734a60b5e46159d5a75b01
 IDDStor2.dat
 IDDStor2.dat.bak

The first item in the list above is a folder containing favicons for your vault logins. Your folder may have a different name to the one above. From a technical standpoint, you really only need the IDDStor2.dat file to create a local vault on the target machine. Your Norton product will recreate the favicon folder if it is not present.

On the PC without a Local Vault:
1.Disable Norton Product Tamper Protection temporarily.
2.In Windows Explorer, make sure that the ‘Show hidden files and folders’ option is selected.
3.Navigate to following folder: C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_21.1.1.7\IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21-1596595386-3307766018-3340439378-1000. Note that some components of the path above will be system dependent eg product version number and the last folder in the path. You need to select your folder (usually denoted with a padlock overlay on the folder icon) or you can check the Security property of the folder to see if your user id has full control over the folder.
4.In the folder above, paste the following three items that you saved earlier from the USB drive or network location:

 bcd9d034b0734a60b5e46159d5a75b01
 IDDStor2.dat
 IDDStor2.dat.bak
5.Re-enable Norton Product Tamper Protection.
6.Important - Log off the user account and log back on again.
7.The local vault option should now be available for you to use. If you have a cloud vault associated with this user account, then remember to use your local vault password to log in to the local vault.
