Vertical Scroll Bar Disappears While Composing Replies in Editor

For the past few days I've noticed that the vertical scroll bar keeps disappearing from the WYSIWYG editor when I'm composing a reply - often when I click inside a quote as shown below or as soon as I insert an image in the reply.

The scroll bar reappears if I preview the post but then disappears again if I make further changes in the editor.

Me too!

I just had that happen in a PM and thought the top of my message had disappeared, so I typed it again.  When the message was sent I could see a double copy of my text.  There was no Preview for the PM.

Yes -- the frame stretches but no vertical scroll bar

Elsewhere I've run into the scroll bars not working on frames for the message but do for the outer forum frame.

In composing I rather like the auto-stretch since I can always see the beginning of the message

There was just a Windows Update that could cause an error with the scroll not working at times. It was just in Nov. Updates. Krusty, don't know if it was in Win 10 Updates or not, but it was in Win 7 updates.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit 2004 N 360 22.20.5.39 Chrome latest version.

Hi floplot:

I see the vertical scroll bar on the editor disappear on a Vista SP2 computer and my OS hasn't received security updates via Windows Update since extended support for this OS ended in April 2017, so I don't think it has anything to do with the November 2017 Patch Tuesday updates.

I'm very sorry for the delay on this one. I'm trying to get the scroll bar to appear on the right, but I don't see it. Can someone walk me through how they're getting the vertical scrollbar for a reply? For me, it ALWAYS expands the size of the text editor.

Hi Tony:

Here's how I can make the vertical scroll bar appear /disappear:

Create a reply in the editor with 8 short paragraphs of text as shown <here> without dragging the corner to increase the size of the frame.  The vertical scroll bar should appear as soon as you have typed in enough text to exceed the allotted space inside the frame, but it doesn't.  Instead, you have to use the up/down arrows on the keyboard to navigate to the top/bottom of the post.

Then click the PREVIEW button to preview the reply.  The scroll bar appears and you can drag it with your mouse or touchpad to scroll up and down, but the scroll bar disappears again as soon as it is released.  Click the PREVIEW button again and the scroll bar will reappear.

If you SAVE the post and then click EDIT, the scroll bar will initially appear but then disappear as soon as you begin making edits to the reply.

It could have something to do with your OS, or your use of the FF ESR v52.

I'm on Win 10 with Chrome and I just see the reply box auto expanding when I type more information than will fit in the initial screen. No scroll bars needed. 

But I just checked with FF 57 and I see that the auto expanding does not work, and as you say there is no scroll bar. Looks like an issue with FF.

Thanks for confirming you can replicate the issue with Firefox.

I've even tried manually resizing the frame, but with limited success.  With longer posts (especially posts with embedded images) the frame often jumps back to its original size and prevents me from viewing the entire post.

I forgot to mention that the vertical scroll bar element in editors on other forums like BleepingComputer still work fine with my FF ESR v52.5.2 browser.

FF ESR (extended support release) v52.x has received all security updates and a few bug fixes since FF ESR v52.0.0 was released 07-Mar-2017 but there have been no major feature changes since then, so it's possible it was a recent update to the Norton forum software that caused the disappearance of the vertical scroll bar with Firefox - perhaps when the new auto-save feature was introduced?

I should also add that I have never seen the frame of the editor on the Norton forum auto-resize with my FF ESR browser when I was composing longer replies, so I have no idea when that particular feature was added.

While the lack of a scrollbar is always inconvenient, for me it creates particular difficulty when I am using the Quote function, especially if I am trying to shorten the quote -- and triply so if there are images in the quote.

But this does not work the same in Firefox.  Firefox used to have a scroll bar. If you click Preview you will see the scroll bar.

Any update on this Firefox incompatibility?  It's a PITA trying to compose longer posts in the forum without an auto-resize feature for the text area or a vertical scroll bar.

Is anyone from Symantec looking into a fix for this forum software bug?  It's been a month since the last time I bumped this thread (and almost three months since I first reported the problem) and I still don't know if the developers have this on their "to do" list.

It might be worth repeating my 05-Dec-2017 comment that the auto-resize feature isn't working either, and if i try to manually drag the bottom-right corner of the frame to increase the text area it just snaps back to its original size as soon as I start typing again.

Could someone from Norton please tell us if anyone from the software development team is planning to fix this bug in the editor?  I still can't scroll when I'm composing longer posts and can't re-size the frame of the editor (automatically or manually) with my Firefox browser.  It's a bit annoying having to bump this thread every month so it doesn't get locked again.
