Video Supervision for Android

I have two sons with the Norton Family app installed on their Android phones. They're both running Android Nougat/7 although they look fairly different since they are both running stock, non-rooted firmware on a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and a Moto G5 Plus, so one has Samsung's Touchwiz UI and the other is fairly vanilla Android.

My question is regarding video monitoring. I can see all the other sections normally, like time & app usage, location, and messaging. However, for both of their devices I am unable to use video monitoring from the parent portal or whatever it's called. I can toggle it on, but when I go to view activity both of their profiles state that they are "not associated with any video supervision supported device."

Does video supervision not work with the YouTube app? Neither of them uses Hulu, but my one son is on YouTube quite a bit. Do I have to do anything else or grant permissions in Nougat to get it working? The only other thing I can think of to do is to disable YouTube and tell him to use YouTube in his web browser. It seems odd to me that he would need to do so since many of the apps generate web traffic via API calls over http and they show up in their browsing history so I would imagine YouTube does the same thing.

Thanks for your time. I searched for this subject in existing threads and have to tip my hat to KatieQ. You seem very patient even with rude & demanding posters.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Hello merrickson. Norton Family does indeed support video supervision, Hulu (Android only) and U-Tube on both Android and IOS. You must upgrade to a Premier account to access the video activity details of your child.

If you are using a Premier account this thread may answer some or all of your questions as well.  You can also view your child's visits to popular video hosting websites in the Web tab in the Activity page.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Thanks for the reply, but I already read those articles and I do have a premier account, as should be evident from my ability to see location and usage time. I still get the message in the parent section that they are not associated with any video supervision supported devices. I only have nougat android devices to test with. Are there any additional requirements?

Re: Video Supervision for Android

merrickson hello again. Do you have video set in the house rules section?

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Yes, it is enabled. As I said in my first post I can toggle it on, but in the activity section I see the error message about them not being associated with any video supervision supported devices.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Can you verify the version you have installed on the parental device? There is a new version available for Windows via liveupdate that MAY correct your issue. Thanks.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

I get the error on the web client. I don't have a windows application installed at all. On my android phone under video activity it just says there was no activity during the specified time period. However, under app supervision I can see that he used the YouTube app for over 5 hours in the past 7 days.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Good morning!! I must say I was incorrect with stating Android is supported on Norton Family for video supervision previously. Currently, it is supported on Windows and IOS only. If the parental device doing the monitoring device is an Android device that would account for your issue. Please see this thread by Katie_Q earlier in May of this year.

Your current version for android should be 4.3.2 per this article.

There is a newer version available for Windows from the service. Do you have a Windows based PC or other device? The solution in your case would be to install and monitor from that device.

Merrickson, I hope this appropriately answered your question. Please let us know. Thanks and have a grand day today.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Like I said I'm using the web portal since the parent side of the android app is garbage in comparison and lacks many of the features of the web app. It looks the same on both Windows and Android. I don't see how where I access the usage reports from would have an impact as you've already admitted that video supervision isn't supported on Android. I guess that answers my question but it hardly resolves the underlying issue. Is there a development road map you could share with me to indicate when such issues will be fixed? It would be nice if there was also some kind of clear concise documentation, such as a feature availability chart by platform to make the purchase decision as a fully informed purchaser. Even your support here pointed me to at least 5 different articles/threads. This is unacceptable since before purchase the materials I read didn't give any indication of what features were available for which platform.

Re: Video Supervision for Android

Good morning again. I had asked whether you have a Windows device NF can be installed on for the parental monitoring purposes. That will solve the supervision issue until such time as support on Android becomes a reality. I totally understand you frustration 100%. Being that I am NOT an Symantec employee and do not have access to inside information I can only provide what is available to give everyone straight up answers that will hopefully answer the underlying questions presented. We seem to have done that with this issue. Please keep in mind. Most of us here provide our time willingly and are not paid for providing solutions. :-)

As for a road map for future development you would have to contact support for that information.

One thing you can do is provide your feedback as a product functionality suggestion in this thread. It IS monitored by the Admins as well as Symantec employees alike.
