Virus maybe?

Hi All,

XP SP3

Norton 360 Premier

I already tried scanning in safe and power eraser and came up empty. Tried Malware bytes too and nothing.

But when I try to update Windows the PC restarts (BSOD) and gives a stop code. It also restarts BSOD and stop code when I try to open Internet Explorer but not Firefox, which is my main browser i.e. default. I disabled auto restart to get the stop code the last two times and both were different. I tried searching...but my tech-knowledge is limited.

Would be greatful for any help!

The two codes were:

0x00000050 (0xD0200000,0x00000000,0x805737E8,0x00000000)

0x00000050 (0xD0E40000,0x00000000,0x805737E8,0x00000000)

Thanks

Re: Virus maybe?

So, I finally got N360 reinstalled.

Now I go into statrup manager and it shows 22 items on startup. However, it actually only shows 15 of them i.e. MSM messenger starts up each time because Norton does not actually show it to me so I can disable??

BTW thanx for alllll the help.

Actually, I saw your post yesterday morning and since it had not been answered I figured the same as others had - leave it for Quads.  Quads is our malware remvoal expert and we usually leave threads concerning virus to him to handle.  He has a policy that if the user attempts their own fix, or follows others users instructions, then Quads will not handle the virus situation.  That is most likely why no one responded and Quads had not got to it yet - or saw that you had already proceeded on your own and decided to leave it alone.

In regards to you current StartupManager situation, I thought I'd include some info from the help section of N 360 StartUp Manager:

"Sometimes, you may see some startup programs missing from the startup list. Norton 360 removes a startup program from the list for the following reasons:

-  When you disable a program that has a startup setting.

-  When you update a program that can possibly reset all startup settings to default.

-  When you use another program to manage your startup programs.

-  When you edit the registry keys manually.

Programs that are disabled or delayed are still available in your computer. You can run the delayed programs manually before Norton 360 runs them automatically after the automatic tasks delay time is over."

Googling stop error 0x00000050 gives responses that suggest hardware or driver errors. Have you checked Device Manager to see if there are any drivers marked with a '!'

Have you run chkdsk /r on your hard drive, to see if there are any bad sectors?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Virus maybe?

Did chkdsk /f & /r = nothing

No probs with hardware either.

Norton crapped out on me again though - some sort of error that it couldn't fix itself then prompted me to un/reinstall.

I did but upon restart after uninstalling Norton pops open Internet explorer to, I guess, ask why you uninstalled. Of course for me that means another stop error again and again. I was finally able to close IE before it opened to prevent the stop error (blue screen) and reload Norton.

Norton once again seems to be fine but IE still crashes my PC every time, which means I still can't update = something fishy right?

The issue seems to be with IE.

You may be able to check this using a system file scan.

Click on the Start button and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click Run as Administrator. Type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. This will check your Windows system  files and try to correct any missing/corrupt files.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Virus maybe?

sfc/scannow found some problems:0

Unfortunately I'm in Europe atm and don't have my XP CD's with me:(

Will have to limp along as is and hope Norton keeps out any bad guys until I get home next week, as I can't update XP.

Your reply seems most promising though, THANKS!:)

Will let you know what happens when I get home.
