VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

I'm getting bombarded by emails from the background apps trying to access a blocked site with the new VPN feature.  Is there a way to filter this out?

Example:

Hi Myfamily,

xxxxx has attempted to visit the following Website(s) that belong to the block Website categories:

I must get this 10 times a day...

Thanks,

Sam

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

The first question is are you blocking those categories? Social Networking and Online Chat? If so you will be notified when your child is trying to access those categories on the internet.

As for the number of times, the team is looking into how we can aggregate them better, but there is a balance between gathering all the blocks and informing the parent. Many have complained that we don't inform soon enough, others that we inform too much.

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

Thanks for responding Matt.  Yes I am blocking Social Networking and Online chat - the issue (and sorry if I wasn't clear in my original question) is that when you check out the link of the blocked site, say graph.facebook.com the link takes you to a page with code on it, i.e., these are analytics blocking not actual web site view attempts my child is doing that are being blocked.  I'll get the blocked message when my child is just on her iPad or iPhone doing homework.  I don't want to unblock the sites (Social Networking and Online chat) but I don't really need to be notified of Norton Family blocking a IP address in the background that my child isn't physically attempting to visit.  Hope that makes sense,

Thanks,

Sam

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

Sam that helps for sure. One thing to note however is that the software can't determine easily if the child had used facebook in a url (web browser), the app, or other means to communicate with facebook. So it's entirely possible that facebook is trying to do something (in the case above contacting the graph api part) that your child didn't execute. However, this is caused by facebook potentially running in the background or attempting to do something on your child's behalf.

Is facebook running in the background?

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

Matt,

I looked at all my daughters devices (iPod touch, iPad and iPhone) and neither have the Facebook app installed nor Twitter (we don't allow them to use either).  My son has an android device and I don't get the any of these blocked site notices shown below.   The email from Norton I just got a moment ago has these sites as being blocked (all from the iPad):

I asked her if she was trying to access anything related to FB and she said no.  She was using google as a search engine which may explain the "mtalk.google.com" though what she was searching up wasn't related to that.

Thanks for following up,

Sam

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

I am experiencing the exact same problem and it is making me seriously dislike the app because I’m becoming desensitized to the warning emails because there are so many. Not to mention needing to clear out my inbox constantly. It wasn’t happening before and like the OP said - my kids get the notifications of blocked sites even when they have closed out all of their browser windows and they are not accessing those sites at all. Thanks for investigating and looking for a proper solution. I have liked the norton family app a lot prior to this.

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

Speaking with my team it appears that even if you are not using facebook but go to a website that has a "like" button or "comments" section that ties back to facebook it can actually makes those calls which we are blocking.

We are looking for ways to suppress those that are not top level meaning those urls that children don't go to explicitly but the web page accesses on their behalf.

Re: VPN Web filtering sending too many emails

The latest VPN feature provides protection across all apps on the device thereby resulting in many alerts and emails being sent. However please be assured that we are looking into possibilities to aggregate the alerts and reduce emails sent to parents.

Thanks - I believe you guys are honing in to the core root of the problem.
