Web Protection Faultering?

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this has been addressed already, but i'm getting an issue where the little padlock in the corner no longer refreshes when loading a web page.

In the past it used to briefly shimmer (or refresh as i'd describe it) when you navigated to a webpage on the stock browser or Chrome. However it is no longer doing this.

Does this mean that it is not working? Or is it how things are now since the last update, and i've only just noticed?

I definitely have it turned on in the settings, so unsure if it is working or not.

Thanks,

Richie

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Edit

I realized this was a mobile question, and I had answered as if it were a PC issue.

I'm not sure if the mobile browsers work the same way, but on PC's the padlock icons are a feature of the browser, not Norton.

I'll let @Andmike  or @smithy comment on the mobile version.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Hi Richie.

Can you post a screen shot as I don't normally get a padlock in the corner when I use the stock or Chrome browsers on my Android 4.1.2 phone.

I do get a padlock if I go to a secure site (e.g. https) but I assume that is not the issue with you.

Not having noticed the padlock, I have not noticed a change...

I was going to say that I had had no reason to assume that if I tried visiting a site that Norton does not like it will let me know, and give me the chance of overriding it if I wish.  However I have just looked up a couple of sites on my phone, that N360 says are suspect and my phone logged me in without any comment.  So I will try raising this with the team and let you know if I hear anything of interest.  I must point out that both sites I tried were merely grey (dubious or unsure) warnings on N360 not the big red warnings.  Sorry but I was not prepared to try that for you.

If you need any assistance in capturing or posting a screen shot, just let us know.

All the best.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you for yours.

I don't need to post a screenshot as I believe I can describe it better now.

I have the "Ongoing Security Status" option ticked, so the Norton padlock is always present in the notification bar. With web protection on, the padlock would refresh and the word "scanning" appear when you  browsed to a Web page on the stock browser or Chrome.

This no longer happens.

So how do I/We know the web protection part of the product is working properly? Is it still scanning the pages?

I hope this explains it for everyone a bit better. I am concerned it is not scanning the pages correctly anymore. If at all.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Thanks for the explanation Richie.

I understand now.

To be honest I am not currently sure how you can be certain that NMS is scanning the websites adequately, but if I get a suitable response from the team I will let you know.

All the best.

Thanks for your response mate. Any word since?

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this at all? Does seem strange that i'm the only one. It defintely doesn't appear to be scanning webpages anymore.

Any help or assistance with this issue would be appreciated.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Hi Richie.

Sorry but I have heard nothing from official sources (who are probably working hard on sorting out various issues) but I have seen other users report that they have been saved from going to malicious sites by NMS.  So it does appear to be working but may just not be showing up.  I have no reason to assume that your system will be any different.

Good luck.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Hi, Richie.

I assuming you are referring to the orange padlock at the upper left corner of the screen?  I have never noticed it to shimmer when I visited a website.  I have seen it shimmer when NMS was scanning my tablet, or when I downloaded some app or an update for an app.  Are you using the paid version of NMS? I'm using the free version.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

I just had an issue. Visited a blog and read a few posts. Went back ten minutes later to double check something I had read. I didn't receive any warning the first time I was on the page. The second time, NMS blocked it as a malicious website. Entering the site in Safe Web gets the orange "Caution" icon. Under "Threats" it says:

--

Threat Report

Viruses

Threats found: 1

Here is a complete list: (for more information about a specific threat, click on the Threat Name below)

Threat Name:

Scam Website

--

Should I be concerned about my phone being compromised? If it just said "scam website" I wouldn't be as worried, but the word "viruses" is scaring me--especially as I was on that page minutes before and even when Norton blocked it the second time, the page loaded before the warning kicked in.

I did run the site through sucuri which said it was clean, but not sure they would check for mobile threats.

(Sorry to hijack thread--wasn't sure whether to post here or start a new topic)

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Hi roane.

Without knowing the website it is diffcult to given a good answer.  However I don't think you need to worry too much.

It looks to me as if the "Viruses" statement on the safe web report was a generic, particularly as the details report just says "Scam Website".  That might mean that if you do go onto the "Scam Website" you will be at risk from a virus such as FBI ransomware.  So there might be viruses behind the website.

The good news seems to be that an alternative checker did not find anything and that you first went there with a phone which is less susceptible to the normal types of web attacks that are normally focused on PCs and Macs.

The change in the NMS report from nothing to being blocked may have just been the result of Norton updating in the background.

The really good thing seems to be that NMS does now warn you about the site and gives you the option of choosing if you wish to take the risk or not.

I hope that helps.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

I am on the paid version yes.

The padlock definitely used to shimmer everytime you visited a different webpage. Now it doesn't. This is what I am unclear about.

I think the next step is to contact Norton officially and see what they make of it. it can't be that mine was the only one to shimmer, and now doesn't. other's padlocks must have done it too. It was a nice way of seeing norton was active when you were browsing. Not I am not so sure it is.

This had only happened since the new mobile version was released by the way.

I see.  That's why I've never seen this happen on my android tablet when visiting a website, since the free version lacks Web Protection.

Do let us know what they say.  That could help others.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

I did have the padlock "shimmer" when I had the paid version on my Galaxy S3 and had the ongoing notification checked. I haven't noticed it doing that since I upgraded to a Galaxy S4. That being said, NMS did block a site the other day.

Re: Web Protection Faultering?

Thanks, Andmike! I think part of the issue may be that I am unsure how to decipher the Threat Report--which looks sightly different on a PC as it does on my phone. I've posted a screenshot over on the Toolbar board as I didn't want to derail this thread too badly.

As always, thanks for replying! :)
