Well, that was disappointing....

After being directed to this article: https://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/what-you-need-know-about-wannacry-ransomware?inid=hho_forums_srb_ransomwannacry#comments-begin

It looked interesting enough and would have liked to comment on it, however, even after reading the massive Terms Of Service (TOS) and completing the registration, I was not able to post, although, there was a hyperlink to "comments".  I attempted to message RGMDonaldson about this concern, however, the system would not let me send the message interpreting it as spam.  I attempted once again and received a 503 error of which I'm attaching a screenshot.  After that, I was like, "Forget this...." (laughs)

At one point in the article they explain, "These earlier variants of WannaCry did not have the ability to spread via SMB."

So, after reading that, I internalized that as, "Well, that's good.  At least it doesn't have the ability to spread by way of Super Mario Brothers."  Joking aside, at such a critical placement, it would have been nice if the author spelled out the acronym then perhaps later could have abbreviated it.  On thinking about it more, perhaps SMB is Sim BIOS?

Other oddities I am noticing with respect to community.norton.com: 1.) After I post a new idea to say (Tech Outpost) while I'm logged in, I can see it, however, after logging out, it vanishes like Haruhi.  It is only until the next day that I see it.  2.) Discrepancy with "Users Currently Online".  Depending on what forum page you are on, it seems that there are different counts and it is not synchronized. 3.) After previewing my PDF file (before submitting this post) then, I tried to return to the main post window, but, my entire post was gone!  I had to re-craft this entire post!  Very annoying to say the least.

Sincerely,

H.B.

 Hi Hammer_Bro:

I asked a similar question  - see Symantec employee Kevin's response in Tony Weiss' thread State of the Forums about how the web pages you view on the forum are pulled from caching servers on their CDN (content delivery network) when you are logged out of the forum to reduce the load on their main server.  The web pages on these caching servers are only refreshed intermittently, and the time period between refreshes for the Norton community is apparently several hours, not minutes.

Re: Well, that was disappointing....

Hi,

Thank you so much for providing that information.  I will definitely have to look deeper into that link...  I figured that there was some sort of delay, perhaps for quality control, but, just don't remember such a significant gap in the past?  "State of the Forums" reminds me of State of The Union, lol.  Quick question, is your handle-name (i)macri or (L)macri?

Thank you for contributing to this discussion,

Sincerely,

H.B.

Here's a good example of why it's not only annoying, but potentially dangerous to have a lag of several hours before information on the caching servers is updated.

If I log into the forum and browse to the Tech Outpost board here's a partial screenshot of what I currently see on the main servers ...

... and here's what I see when I log out.

This spam message from Gibson17 was reported to the forum mods several hours ago by F 4 E and the post was deleted from the main servers (the user account must have been closed because all I see is an "Access denied.  You are not authorized to access this page." error when I try to view Gibson17's user profile).  However, the contents of this thread can still be viewed on the outdated web pages on the caching servers if I'm logged out of the forum.  This spam message has clickable links that could easily be disguised to re-direct users to a malicious website if GIbson17 had intended harm.

Thanks. This is an issue we know about, that lag between the caching servers and what gets posted. Our focus in the next few quarters will be to improve these types of forum issues. I'll keep you posted.

 Hi Tony_Weiss:

Thanks for the update.  Kevin's response in your State of the Forums thread was posted over two years ago so it's good to know this issue is back on your radar.
