What is the best way to install NS?

Hello everyone,

After over 10 years I am using NIS, I'm now considering to buy NS (5 devices) and I wanted to ask what is the best way to install it, through an over the top install letting NS take care to uninstall NIS or is it better to use NRT for the removal.

If an over-the-top installation was the best choice, data such as the Personal Firewall settings will be preserved?
I am not concerned to preserve the ID Safe data since I don't use this feature.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hi, Sandro. Symantec advise that NS can be overinstalled, and it will preserve your settings.

That's what I did, however there are several different settings you may wish to go through, just to check it's set up as you want.

It worked fine except for the shut down delay, which is why I reverted to NIS for the time being.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Thank you, F4E, for confirming that NS can be overinstalled. This is the option I prefer to avoid having to re-customize the Personal Firewall and other settings.
The shut down delay is the only thing that is really annoying. Before proceeding with the upgrade in the next few days I will evaluate what to do.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Early this morning, I installed NS 30 days trial and everything went smooth and fast.
So far, I have not had any problems, even NIS settings have been preserved except for a few things that I had to re-set.
I did some tests for the Shut down and takes no longer than 15-20 seconds.
The NS GUI is more reactive than NIS.
IE11 is a bit faster than before.

If the shut down delay doesn't happen (fingers crossed) in the next 5-6 days, I will buy a license

I'll come back here to update the thread.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

I went with a clean install to avoid any issues. Uninstalled NIS. After reboot. Ran NRT https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133... Followed by another reboot. Then installed NS. I never ever install a whole new version of software over the top of previous software. Especially maintaining old settings from previous software. To many potential issues that can pop up down the line.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hi Sandro,

I agree with FattiesGoneWild.

Be sure, if you opt for a clean install, to remove all ghosted drivers, from previous NIS installations, they can be found in Device Manager, but even if you select the "Show Hidden Devices" option you won't be able to see them. (EraserUtilRebootDrv, EraserUtilDrv1XXXX are some of those, there are more that even NRT cannot detect & remove).

A more advanced approach is required but I'm sure you will figure it out.

Important: This is to be used BEFORE any "potential" visit to the registry in order to delete orphaned NIS entries/keys.

Cheers,

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Over the top install of NSwBU over NIS v21 worked fine for me. Retained all settings and both local and online vault access.

Using NRT is probably overkill for most users. If there is a problem, you might look into that.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Thank you both, guys,

It is true, but I am experiencing something incredibly wonderful even with an over the top install.

My NS is working very well and so quietly that I didn't remember that this had never happened in the 10 years I was using NIS.
When I run LiveUpdate and the virus defs are installed along the other updates, the ram remains almost unchanged, while with NIS my RAM was devoured, there were changes from 250 to 400 MB, always.
Now even the CPU no longer peaks as it always did with NIS.

So long as NS will continue to work in this way, it will be unlikely that I reinstall it using NRT.

Of course, if it would no longer work properly, I will use tool.

Cheers,

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Sandro, I hope it doesn't happen, but you may find the shutdown time increasing over time.

This has happened to a few users. I hope your install continues to behave.

Hi F4E,

I am aware that I could still have this issue.
So far this is not happening and I hope that never happens. I think that if the issue doesn't occur during the first 6-7 days after installation, it should not happen anymore.

Let's see what happens

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Four hours ago I purchased NS 5 device retail and activated the product.
Then I asked for support via Norton Chat to transfer the 17 days remaining from my subscription with NIS.
They took just 10 minutes to transfer the remaining days, even adding a little present for 3 more days of subscription.
Moreover, they were very kind and professional.

I Believe that delayed shut down will not happen anymore for my computer, is as fast as it was the first day I installed NS :)

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hi Sandro,

This is great news to hear, glad the installs went well for you and hope you still keep us updated as to how the programme is behaving. I'm still on NIS, renewed 10 days ago, but have been watching these forums re some of the teething problems and for possible updates from Symantec. I would normally wait a few months before upgrading to newer products but I had no choice but to go with NIS again. If all goes well in the near future then I too will go the same path as you.

Have a good day.

Hello brummie,

I will not fail to do so!

Now we all know that this issues has been taken over by Symantec and I hope for all that it will be fixed, and soonest! I'm glad I did not have this problem but so sorry for those who are still experiencing.

I said since when I learned about this long-delayed shut down that deserves to be a top priority on all issues that are still present on NS, many users don't use NS and NSWB because of this.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hi Sandro,

It would be interesting to know just what percentage of users have this slow shut down problem. Don't forget, a lot of people you see on the forums are here because of issues, it is most likely that the vast majority out there don't see this particular problem, at least I like to think so.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Sandro,

If you have a 32-bit system, after an idle quick scan, leave your pc idle, for let's say 10 more minutes  and observe NS behavior, see also Performance Graph, the SRTSP.SYS issue is present on 32-bit systems.

Report back.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

My NIS was running out so I did install NS. I did overinstall. I was afraid about this long restart issue, but so far all has gone well, have had no problem and restart and shut down process is normal. Hope that will be the case .

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hello Apostolos,

I had already done these tests and the only problem I found is that when Graph is opened once everything is displayed correctly, but checking one more time, events are still displayed correctly while the CPU usage and RAM resources are no longer displayed, the Graph is blank (empty). Just a shut down or a restart solves the issue, and this is what should be fixed.

Further info, when NS is performing his tasks while the computer is idle, I noticed that the CPU doesn't spike more, as was the case with NIS. Even "ns.exe" is pretty quiet.

Hi Gretar,

Keep an eye on the time required to shut down for a week, if the problem doesn't happen, you should feel comfortable thereafter

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Could the fact that other users like myself are on 64 bit and are experiencing long shut down times, and could that be part of the problem ?

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

Hi F4E,

It would be enough that some users continue to post here by providing the specs of their computers, OSs, and if it is 32 or 64 bit and saying if they affected by this issue.

Maybe this could also happen when there are many services that are enabled at startup and NS perhaps fails to close them during the shut down.
I used to have only those services that are essential to be running.
This is just a thought, I do not know if it is really so.

Hi Sandro

Thanks for your advice. I cross my fingers the next days when my computer restarts  . But even if all works well for my (hopefully) then I am waiting for the bug fix.

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

OK, I have to edit some things I had said in my previous post

As long as I don't go to Settings > Administration Settings, the Graph that should display the CPU usage and RAM resources it is always displayed correctly, even if it is opened several times to check the values.

First screenshots before accessing Settings and Administration Settings
The Graph shows everything correctly

Second screenshot after having acceded to Settings and Administration Settings
The Graph is blank (empty)

Shutdown or reboot temporarily solve the issue.

I think Symantec should investigate this issue, I'm also considering whether I'll have to start a new thread about this issue.

Hi Sandro,

I think that is a good idea to start a new thread regards the 'Graph' display problem, it will get better exposure to it IMO.

I will, brummie, even as this deserves to be investigated.

Now I'm trying to fix the computer of my nephew who was infected by a nasty beast that I am not yet able to tame, so far.
Hoping that I will not have to reinstall Windows!

Re: What is the best way to install NS?

It's been two weeks since I installed NS, and since then I'm monitoring the issue that occurs in the Graff that randomly appears to be empty. I'm now finding that this issue occurs less often. Perhaps, this could be due to the fact that I had made an over install?
If this issue would still persist, or even resolve on its own, I will be here to update the thread.
