This is what pisses me!!! off the most!!!

my sistem:

WIndows 8.1 PRO

NORTON SECURITY DELUXE - TRIAL version

yes I know, it is one of the best protection system, yes it is my favorite!
but I can not tolerate this constant error of scanning my SSD system. or my new  NVME m.2! why ?  why optimze DRIVES!! WHY!!!!!

I have already disabled the options ( Shedulle service- etc.. ) but this BUG persists since 2017, in 2018 I used other antivirus but all left my system slower.
only norton does well.

I would love to come back......, I was very optimistic about this new version, but I was betrayed the first time my System became IDLE.

very sad

Norton calls the Windows disk optimization settings that will use a trim command on an SSD. So Norton is not actually doing a defrag on an SSD.

Here is some information on the Windows defrag and SSDs.

Hi Leow33D:

Make sure that both these settings are disabled:

   - Settings | Task Scheduling | Automatic Tasks | Disk Optimization (a scheduled defrag)
   - Settings | Administrative Settings | Idle Time Optimizer (an idletime defrag)

Both these settings are enabled by default in Norton, and many users in this forum disable these unnecessary defrags and let their built-in Windows Disk Defragmenter handle their disk optimization. Once Norton schedules a defrag on your system it cannot be cancelled and must run to completion, so you might notice a Norton disk optimization running during system idles for the next day or two after you disable the above settings before those changes take effect.

Yes, a big disappointment to see a otherwise sophisticated product like Norton running defrag on an ssd.  It just wears them out!  I turned off auto defrag as my hd is backup and can be defrag when I remember to worry about it!  Anyone see a portal for bug reports?  I used t consult for $55/hr, so why can't I give it away for free?  Is there a similar open source product?

I guess save means post?

Chat support is broken, search support is broken, is Norton dying?

Maybe they never tested it with Google Chrome?

So if defrag is good for performance and might prevent loss of space, is defrag trimming and defragging with some sort of restraint, like when trim buffers are 50% full or files are in >N pieces?

Disk Optimization defragments SSD drive on Windows

On Windows 7, Disk Optimization(Defragmenting the SSD drive) might not make a big difference as compared to other disk types. However on Windows 8, a general optimization is carried out by the Defragment and Optimize Tool to handle various kinds of hard drives, including SSDs.

Microsoft has introduced the Defragment and Optimize Tool on Windows 8, which also includes the Storage Optimizer. In SSDs, the Storage Optimizer is responsible for carrying out disk optimization and disk cleanup during idle time on a periodical basis. This process is different from the traditional defragmentation procedure and is safe for SSDs.

On Windows 10, optimization can be initiated. A Trim command is initialized to allow the operating system to inform an SSD about which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped out for writing the data. Trim has been available since Windows 7 but back then was pretty much invisible to the end user. On Windows 10, Trim has surfaced in the Tools menu in Drive properties in a feature called Optimize.

TRIM is an essential feature for an SSD to keep it on top performance and helps the drive to last much longer. Here's how to make sure the feature is enabled on Windows 10

   - Settings | Administrative Settings | Idle Time Optimizer (an idletime defrag)

just disable service IDLE!
It's working perfectly without optimizing my NVME 5 days!

thank you all for the support and answers that helped a lot!

Re: This is what pisses me!!! off the most!!!

I am going to defrag monthly manually. Doing one thing and calling it another does not build trust, even when you can blame MS windows. I can fstrim my LINUX ssd at the same time. Luckily ext4 virtually never needs defrag!
