Hello warrenkirby328

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Norton Antivirus 2005 is way too old to use with today's malware. It is advisable to install NAV as soon as possible since you have let your trial version expire. I would stay off the net until you can purchase a more up to date version. NAV 2011 is the latest version. Thanks.

I agree with Floplot.

Also NAV 2005 is not compatible with Vista.

Hi warrenkirby328,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Just to clarify, you said you had NAV (Norton Antivirus) trial installed and it expired recently. How did you go from this to even attempting to install NAV 2005?

Also, what is the history of this laptop? Is this a new laptop? Is there any other security software installed on this laptop? Note that new computers/laptops always have some trial version of some software. Any other security software must be uninstalled through control panel and run a removal tool provided by the vendor of the other security software before you attempt to install Norton. Let us know if you need assistance finding such a removal tool.

Have you already purchased a subscription for NAV? Once you have a subscription, you can download NAV 2011 from here. I would recommend doing this from a different computer which has security protection and save it to removable media such as external hard drive or USB flash.

You can then plug the removable media into your laptop and install NAV from there. Be sure to run live update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports that there are no more updates.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: which version of norton antivirus can be installed with Vista?

Hello warrenkirby

You will have to purchase a newer version since NAV 2005 is too old to qualify for a free upgrade also. I would check the stores and reliable online sites for a good price. Also, before you install the new NAV 2011, I would do some scans and make sure that the computer is still malware free. I would assume that the last Norton product you used was from 2005. If you can find any version of NAV from 2006 or newer, you can use that key and install the newest NAV 2011 without having to install the older version also. What is needed is a newer key that is authentic. Thanks.

Hi Floplot,

I doubt the OP had NAV 2005 on the computer to begin with because it never could have been installed. I suspect this might have been a new or recent laptop which had one of the later versions of NAV and the OP uninstalled it, probably believing this was necessary in order to switch from trial to full version.

Of course warrenkirby will need to clarify this.

Re: which version of norton antivirus can be installed with Vista?

Hello Allen

I did not mean that the user had NAV 2005 installed on that computer. I was merely saying that the latest Norton product he had in his possession must have been from 2005 so he had tried to install that version since he had nothing newer in his possession. Point being that the key from 2005 is too old to qualify for the free upgrade. Thanks.

Re: which version of norton antivirus can be installed with Vista?

First of all if norton 2005 has not uninstalled properly, then dont worry. First go to system restore and restore your computer to the earlier time when before nrton 2005 was installed. This is safe and I have also tried also it will not affect your file only it will undo changes to your system by norton.

Now I suggest you To go for AVG as Norton 360 has not sovled many of mine problem, and I have noticed that Norton is that not good antivirus.

You might get some disagreement about that around here.  Norton consistently scores high marks in independent tests.

Hi dirkmartz22,

Assuming system restore were successful, yes this would remove 2005 from the registry but the Norton removal tool should accomplish the same thing. The potential issue with using system restore for this, is that the further back one has to go in system restore to reach the pre-2005 state, the more one will lose other programs or changes that have taken place since then.

Also, system restore will fail if Norton Tamper Protection is not disabled first. Then again I cannot remember if Norton 2005 even had Tamper Protection - probably not.

And I wholeheartedly agree with SendOfJive that Norton consistently scores at or near the top of the list in independant testing.

Best wishes.
