Why does it take so long for the "(Downloaded) File is Safe" popup to appear?

When I download a file, such as an executable, I get a popup in the lower right from Norton telling me the file is safe (or, far less frequently, that it isn't).  But it seems like this is a slow process, and getting slower.  Even for very common, widely used files, the popup doesn't appear for minutes -- maybe as long as 4 or 5 minutes in some cases (though I haven't actually timed it).  In fact, it's not uncommon for me to have already installed something before the popup appears to tell me the executable is safe.

Is this normal?  Have others had a similar experience?  My browser, which most files are downloaded with, is Firefox 52.7.4esr.  Thanks.

Hi, Ardmore. It's always been instantaneous for me, but I'm using Win 10 V1803 and Firefox 60.0.1 so whether that has anything to do with it, I'm not sure.

Thanks, F 4 E.  I'm using Windows 7.  My concern isn't so much about having to wait for the feedback, but instead whether that delay might suggest any risk, or problem with my Norton installation.  The infrequent times when I have had an intrusion-attempt pop-up from ending up on an infected (or suspected) webpage, *those* alerts appeared instantly...quite a different story from files I download.  Could it be related to some difference between how File Insight (the downloads) and Intrusion Protection (the infected webpage) work?

I often see a delay here too.  I suspect that it is just some delay while Norton accesses its servers to check for file reputation.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Yes, that sounds kind of like what I added to the latter part of my last post via edit -- apparently at the same time you were posting.  Thanks.

I think Norton will react quicker if you try and access the file as soon as it is downloaded.  In any case, Norton probably won't let the file / installer run until it has checked its online database.

It does allow me to run it.  Just today I got the reputation "OK" *after* installing a downloaded file.
