Why Is My ProgramData\Norton Folder So Big?

Recently I've noticed that my drive free space has been getting progressively smaller.  I did some checking and discovered that the Norton folder under C:\ProgramData has grown to over 4GB, about 10% of my entire disk usage.  If I add in the Norton and Norton Installer folders under C:\Program Files, Norton is taking up almost 5GB of disk space.  I'm running 32-bit Windows (X86). I can't believe that this is normal for a program that's supposed to be "light on resources".  The majority of space is taken up by the C:\ProgramData\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7} subfolder.  Is there anything I can delete?  I've already uninstalled and re-installed using Norton's NRnR tool.

Ronnie see my screenshot for my install. The folder NSBU 22.9.3.13 shows at 612mb when the entire directory is 613 on disk. Post a screen shot of what you install is showing and I will ask for the other Guru's to have a look so we can determine what is going on and help resolve for you.

In case you do not know how to post a screenshot here instructions are here for you - use the MS snipping tool to gather your image if you are on a Windows system

Hi SoulAsylum,

My folder is simply NS_22.10.0.85, not NSBU......  I wonder if you have Norton Security w/Backup instead.  Mine is just Norton Security and the OS is 32-bit, if that may make any difference.  Here is my screenshot.  Let me know what you think:

Indeed I have NSBU (with backup). I'm not sure why that directory has so many files sitting there. Have a look at your file submission status in Norton history from the dashboard. See if there are a ton of really old community watch submissions that are still pending. Clearing them from history AND shutting off community watch in administrative settings in the Norton dashboard. Reboot the system.

Also manually run live update to get your product to its latest version which I believe should be 22.10.1.10 Recheck for those files still being there after the update.

Great point Vivek. That would remove the folders from older version which are still remaining. The R&R tool recommended can be found here - https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

Re: Why Is My ProgramData\Norton Folder So Big?

Hi SoulAsylum,

Manually running live update did nothing, however your suggestion of removing the community watch submissions form the dashboard actually did reduce the size of the folder by about 20%, but not nearly enough.  I had already used the NRnR tool about a month ago (for that Identity Safe turned off issue), but after reading Vivek's post (Thank You), I decided to do it again, but a bit differently than the previous time.  I just chose the "remove only" option which, after reboot, still left several populated Norton sub-folders in both the ProgramData and Program Files folders.  I went ahead and manually deleted those folders completely, rebooted again and downloaded NS from the website, So far, I've done one quick scan and that subfolder is now called NS_22.10.1.10 and is only about 40 MB in size.  I'm guessing that it will grow somewhat over time, but hopefully it will remain small and not rob me of so much disk space. I also turned off the community watch in administrative settings.  I'll have to wait and see how much it grows over  the next few days and weeks.

Great!! That should have solved the issue. Those old folders were they due to previous builds retaining portions of the older versions and just updating what needed replaced. As my screenshot shows the folder for the original install remains 22.9.3.13 which was the version installed when I had a serious issue back in April this year. Kudos to @Vivek_Singh86 for their R&R suggestion. Please mark the thread as solved if you believe is has been so others may see the solution.

Thanks for your help, but I'd like to keep the thread open for a while to see if and how much the ProgramData\Norton folder grows over time.  I used to have a similar problem with cloud-based Webroot Secure Anywhere (the ProgramData\WRdata folder) and their support team had to whitelist the unknown files in the database every couple of months and I had to subsequently uninstall/reinstall every time.  That's why I switched to NS a couple of years ago.  A well-designed application program should not do that!

Re: Why Is My ProgramData\Norton Folder So Big?

Hi SoulAsylum,

Looks like uninstalling, deleting the entire ProgramData\Norton folder and re-installing did the trick after all.  The folder has grown to now about 114 Mb. after a few weeks, but hopefully it has settled down now.  I hope this doesn't end up being a recurring problem.  Thanks.
