wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

I have set up several wifi extenders in the past with other routers. Others seem to be using extenders with Core. Just connected a TPlink RE305. Seems like extender configures fine but Core doesnt seem to be able to identify it and assign an IP (says identifying...) but extender is shown as connected device. So although devices can connect to the extender just fine, there is no internet connection.

Is there something else i am supposed to do with the core? I also tried with another old extender and got similiar problems with it assigning IP addresses.

Frustrated that  the core doesnt play nice like every other router out there....

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

Hello DorkyChris. Give your wifi extender the SAME SSID and password as your Core network. This may also help.

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

hmmm ... will give that a whirl. I had changed the ssid so that i could be assured which one i was selecting and connecting to (an issue from a previous extender and router combo).

I messed around with every setting  including changing DNS, setting static IP. The really weird thing I have hit on is that i got it to mostly work if i extended my main SSID, but i really wanted to extend my guest network. What works for the main SSID clearly doesnt for guest networks. Do you suppose there is some insideous Core attribute that wont let you extend guest networks?

Now that i have it marginally working on main SSID (which wasnt really my plan) everything connects and gets an IP address (yea!) and actually has an internet connection except the darn Nordic track treadmill which is Android based OS. The ONLY Android OS item in the house. Of course the purpose of the entire Wifi Extender  exercise was to get an internet connection  to the offending Android Treadmill. Connected, but clearly not talking and no internet.

Trying hard to suppress my rage at Core...

Why wouldn't you want to connect your Android Treadmill to your regular network?

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

Is your Nordictrack Bluetooth and/or wifi capable? If Bluetooth it will only connect to and iPad or Android device.

its not rational which is why i went ahead and set it up for the main SSID. But dont you think thats really peculiar? I do.....

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

Treadmill is wifi capable. no bluetooth. if the wind is blowing in the right direction ( and yes i am making a joke) then it will connect to the main SSID on the Core and connect, briefly. It is the only device i have that connects to the extender and wont actually communicate with the internet. Its also the only Android OS device.

But still think its weird i cant extend the guest network....

maybe you android folks are familiar with issues getting devices to work. I feel like i have spent days experimenting on something that usually takes minutes.

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

The guest network is ALWAYS isolated from the 2.4 & 5 ghz wireless and doesn't allow devices connected to it to see or get resources from the other devices on your network. Its by design. Does Core give you a notification that something is being blocked on the Android device?

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

I knew it was isolated (sort of the irrational reason i didnt want this treadmill on the the main SSID as it has gotten a couple of odd blocks and i worry about it being a target).

But it isnt being blocked by the core  at all. and even after the couple of odd things that were blocked it will connect to the main SSID which is just too far away as opposed to the extender. So i have ruled that out. I literally can hop between making a good working connection to the unextended site (which drops because of distance) and then connect to the extended main SSID and it says no internet and shows an error. NO new notifications of blocking or malicious sites in between which is why i discounted that as a cause.

Re: wifi extender configured but not connecting to internet

Is the main SSID setup 2.4gh or 5ghz or both?  That could be the reason it only connects sometimes when the wind is blowing in the  right direction.  The 2.4ghz network will give you better distance and 5ghz will give you faster speed but less distance.
