Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Norton - Cause of freezing?

My system has begun periodically freezing after the Windows Anniversary Update. I have been scouring the web for solutions. Many people are reporting this problem. One suggested solution is uninstalling Norton and switching to Defender. It's not cleat whether or not you then update Defender and reinstall Norton. I guess I'm going to try it.

Is anyone aware of a conflict with the Anniversary Update and Norton?

I've tried reinstalling some drivers and some of the other suggested solutions but they have not worked.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Norton - Cause of freezing?

I have had Windows 10 since release. This is the big "anniversary update." It has caused freezing on many people's systems (just search "Windows 10 Anniversary freeze"). I have uninstalled Norton. The freezing continued to happen so I guess that rules Norton out. Like I said, it was listed as one of the possible culprits. I am using Windows Defender now.

As of this moment, I may have found the solution with a problem related to Office 2016. It is related to the "EventLog-AirSpaceChannel" not set to rollover and it just fills up. It's only been about 15 minutes so I'm not ready to say it's solved. People are experiencing so many different variations.

I'll reinstall Norton after I've gone a few hours without a freeze.

My advice - backup your data and definitely don't delete the rollback files for several weeks.

I disabled Norton & malwarebytes & did an inplace repair/reinstalled the update via the media creation tool. Seems to have worked for me.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Norton - Cause of freezing?

There is a known freezing issue when the OS is installed on a SSD, and apps and data are on a separate drive:

I've had Windows 10 preview, Win 10 for a year or so and Anniversary Edition for a week or so. No problems. While some set ups may have probs I think the numbers are extremely small. Unless you have SSD and separate data, negligible.

Although you may not have experienced an issue, even if it is a small group, it's not going to matter if you become a member. As mentioned previously, this is just one of the threads that is growing and growing:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance...

There are people in that thread who do not have SSD drives. However, it seems the bulk of the affected people have them.

My own primary laptop which uses an SSD was rendered completely disabled forcing a full wipe and reinstall of the OS and blocking of updates. Last night, I decided to turn on my Zenbook which also uses an SSD and within about 10 minutes of updating itself began an endless reboot cycle. Luckily, it eventually popped up the repair console. Like my primary laptop, I was forced to wipe and reinstall. On the second run, it installed the Anniversary update before I could stop it. After about an hour now, it hasn't started freezing. We'll see if it is actually stable the rest of today.

According to articles that are now appearing all over the place, Microsoft has acknowledged it and posted a "work around" but it only works if you still have the ability to boot your system. Just search "windows anniversary update freezing." (here's one: http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-anniversary-update-freezing-micr...)

IF MICROSOFT'S WORKAROUND DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU... go to page 10 of the thread above for instructions on how to wipe and reinstall your system and block updates. Be very careful with that manual update tool. It can suggest updates that your system doesn't need or can't use. (do all of this at your own risk)

Good luck!

im wondering if folks need to check their privacy settings and turn off things that they dont need or use. I got most or almost all turned off plus I use an anti beakin and  I dont see that lagging when typing

After the anniversary update, I  had to go and check ALL Win 10 settings to see what had been changed. All the settings for sending and sharing info with MS were turned on again. So were letting apps access the camera and microphone.

Another setting that many users had disabled was the Fast Startup feature. That too gets turned on again.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Norton - Cause of freezing?

The Anniversary Update is a major update for Windows 10, and many users were excited about it. Unluckily, this is also having some issues, with many users reporting system crashes and freezes after installing it.  Many users reported that to avoid crashes and freezes problem enter into Safe Mode. Follow the steps to do so:

  1. Restart your PC few times during the boot sequence to start Automatic Repair process.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup settings and click the Restart button.
  3. Once your PC restarts, choose Safe Mode with Networking by pressing the appropriate key.
