Windows 10 Creators Update

Anyone else seeing this 'invitation' to try the Creators Update?

I found that my machine had installed this the day after Patch Tuesday.

I did click it on one machine to see what would happen.  It will be interesting to see if that machine gets the update before my other machines.

I'm not in any hurry as I have no use for all the bells and whistles included with Creators Update.  I just want a stable, reliable and safe Operating System.

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Hi, Krusty. Yep it's showing on my two machines, but as I'm not interested in joining the Insider Ring crowd, aka pseudo beta/eap type risk takers, I've ignored it.

I'll wait for the "stable" release------{  ROTFLMAO ! }

Hi, Hugh. What Krusty said. However, I'm using Classic Shell, so there's no much changewise as far as visual look is concerned.

It seems stable enough, and no other issues, atm. Pinning Firefox and IE to the Taskbar won't stick, though.

Someone suggested trying to pin them while they're in use but that doesn't work either, so I'm just using a shortcut for both.

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Thanks everyone.

I applied the update to CU last night -- download and verify quick enough but ages to apply but, working on a multiboot system, once it started applying I'm glad that since Win8 they made the restart intelligent so it skipped the boot selection so that it automatically comes back to the version you are applying the update to.

Actual update took a lot longer than I anticipated -- 40 minutes?

No major problems with installing although it deleted (at least told me!) my Gadgets pack but I reinstalled it. Unfortunately the two gadgets I want most, the round analog clock and the calendar, came originally from Microsoft and although they worked after MS dropped gadgets as unsafe they won't even install on 10.

Haven't had time yet to see what works differently and if it matters to me.

Has anyone found the following in AE or CU:

  1. Disable WiFi Network because you want to use just the tablet as a tablet with nothing deciding it's idle and time to mess around .... (Ditto for Norton > Silent Mode)
  2. Finish using the tablet and SHUT DOWN
  3. Restart when ready to use it again and the WiFi network is still disabled so re-enable it and it shows as enabled; home network (wifi router) shows as connected but no internet connections works -- browser or application.
  4. Windows Network Troubleshooter comes up with reset the network adapter but still not connecting; check cables are plugged in!
  5. Only solution I've found is to RESTART with WiFi shown as ON and then after the Restart everything works OK.

Because the tablet user -- Dottie -- is not able to reset the WiFi Network to ON before shutting down (she uses the tablet for medical therapy purposes) the solution is not to manually reset the WiFi to ON .....

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Thanks K

I got 8Gadgets back and partly resolved in that I found that I had 2 pages of that dedicated sidebar area and some things I could no longer find were in fact on Page 2!

But I still can't get those two you show to install on 10AE or now CU -- I can click/Add and nothing appears. Since both came from MS I concluded that MS had finally disowned/deleted them ....

I've even redownloaded the 8GadgetsPack and it looks as if I have the Calendar installed but no luck yet on clock. I've replaced the speedo dials with another app that is more detailed but does the necessary.

Any thoghts on the clock? At the moment I'm making do with a digital one that I can read without peering at the systray but analog clocks are quicker to read .... as they found out when they started using digital speedometers in cars -- my Citroen GSA had one and it was the only feature I hated!

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

The only suggestion I have would be to uninstall the Gadget Pack and reinstall the latest version.  I've gone through and uninstalled most Gadgets now.  The only ones I kept were the original ones from MS.  I don't use the Sidebar.

On all three of my machines I had a pop up soon after booting to Windows telling me the Gadgets needed repairing, which I did and as you can see, the clock works.

Kudos0

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Yes I got the "repair" and did that first time.

Just realized that while the "Add" may not have worked for me that Drag and Drop did for the Calendar. When I get back the use of the desktop in question I'll recheck that. It may have been a combination of that and having a Page 2 of the sidebar.

I'm not sure what the pros and cons of the sidebar are -- it keeps other icons from invading that area?

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Something I've come across with W10CU that I've not encountered before:

If I have an installer file -- an exe or msi? -- W10CU doesn't seem to know the right mouse click context menu. If I right mouse click on one of them it does not show me a context menu that might include Open, Run as Administrator, Open with (eg 7z that shows me the content of archives which is what I'm used to for up to and including W10AE.

Instead regardless of left or right mouse click it proceeds to start to install ..... and on some utilities like Relcon Icon Restore that I've used for some while now and also on normal applications ....

Anyone encountered this?

Perhaps MS has decided that if you download something you don't want to do anything but install it so it is removing options? Could relate to the limited functions on touching touchscreens -- although I'm encountering this on my trusty old 23 in LCD and desktop.

And so far the install does not proceed at normal speeds if at all so maybe there's an incompatibility with a new version of MSInstaller?

Hugh

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

No, if I left click on an installer then right click it I still get options such as Run as Administrator.

Kudos0

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

I've never had to left click and then right click. Just one or the other -- I just checked it in Win 7 and that's the way it is.

I'll recheck in W10CU if I can find something I don't mind installing again although it hasn't reacted nicely to the Cancel option screen that comes up.

What I will check when I'm next in W10 is whether by any chance it gets reset to single click instead of double-click..... if I can remember where that option is located.

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Thanks Geoff -- I'll check that shortly.

I went to try the Clock gadget on my WIN10AE tablet and it was no longer in the 8Gadgetpack!

But I think it was still in the set I downloaded again after going to W10CU on the desktop a couple of days ago. I tried every variant I could think of:

RMC Add -- negative

RMC Add -- drag and drop negative

Remove the sidebar and repeat ... negative: it just does not appear in every case.

PS in W10CU -- It is on Double click to open (single click to select) which is what I'm used to.

PPS -- It's even worse than I thought -- on the desktop I've got the usual folder Norton puts there when you install -- called Norton Installation Files. I clicked on it to see the contents and maybe delete since it is installed and it started to install with the small white screen labeled Installing and a whirleygig. No way to stop it since CANCEL on it does not. I had to go into Task Manager, find the Windows Installer and end task on it.

Prior to that the system was locked so I couldn't get anywhere, not even the Restart.......

I'll force Check for Updates not CU is officially released and see if they've fixed anything! Negative

Then ran Troubleshooting Tool and it came up with a blank screen headed Update History and it suggested running as administrator which I did and it came up with nothing but offered a search for help which produced a link to precisely that topic although no date or W version shown .... and it did not work.

So I went to the W10 Answers site and it responded with the link ..... which said "if you run the FixIt it wipes out all the Update History ......."

Oh Well!

Another Cumulative Update !

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4016240/windows-10-update-kb401...

Yep!

New update options for Windows 10, version 1703

With the release of Windows 10, we simplified the servicing process by moving to cumulative updates, where each update released contains all the new fixes for that month, as well as all the older fixes from previous months. Today, most organizations deploy these cumulative updates when they are released on the second Tuesday of every month, also called “Update Tuesday.” Because these updates contain new security fixes, they are considered “Security Updates” in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and System Center Configuration Manager.

Based on feedback from customers, we are making some adjustments to the updates that we are releasing for Windows 10, version 1703 (also known as the “Creators Update”). With these changes, we will routinely offer one (or sometimes more than one) additional update each month. These additional cumulative updates will contain only new non-security updates, so they will be considered “Updates” in WSUS and Configuration Manager.

Note that we may occasionally identify non-security fixes that address more critical issues that could be affecting organizations. In those rare cases, a cumulative update would be considered as “Critical Updates” in WSUS and Configuration Manager.

Microsoft to offer more updates for Windows 10

Microsoft announced today that it plans to release non-security updates for the most recent version of Windows 10 Creators Update, early.

Microsoft created two cumulative update patches for Windows 10 previously which the company released on the second Tuesday of every month.

One included security and non-security patches, the other only security updates. Since both included security updates, both were labeled as security updates, with the former being released through Windows Update, the latter available through other means such as the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Starting with Windows 10 version 1703, Microsoft will release one, and sometimes also multiple, updates for release versions of Windows 10 in a given month.

Re: Windows 10 Creators Update

Creators was installed overnight on the 17th April so I now have Win10 Home v1703 Creators Build 15063.138. My settings tell me that my PC is up-to-date so I haven't had the 25th April KB4016240 (OS Build 15063.250) Update mentioned above. Too confusing - the MS article suggests that I need it - so I've posted on MSC.

One problem that Creators caused me was the way it was done - there was a "We want everything to be ready for you" message followed by three sections of the Update: 1. Edge 2. Mail and 3. Store. The only way to get a 100% installation was to go through and tick the lot, so I now have Edge, as well as IE11 and Chrome (which was a temporary solution to IE11 performance issues a few weeks ago). I tried to be positive & so looked into Edge - there was no Favourites bar. I searched and found many FMs there had previously said Edge couldn't have one so I asked in a new thread there. The FM told me to "go the Settings Menu. You will see a 3dot icon on the upper right corner of the Edge screen. Click the 3dot icon, go to settings and choose View favorites settings. It worked but that was the start of WWIII. An expert went beserk and said the advice "referred to Edge versions prior to the Creators update - it does not work with Edge version 40". A Moderator changed the FM's advice.

But it had worked for me - I posted these snips showing that I could import favourites and that I did have v 40.

The expert accused me of lying & posting doctored snips - those comments have been removed, thank goodness. But his argument is still going on in another forum there - the expert is still beefing. So if anyone has Edge, and the time to do it, will you please follow the FM's advice emboldened above and see if you get the option to show the Favourites bar, and then check that you have Edge version 40. If you get the same results as I did, it will be of tremendous help to me. Thank you.

PS Another MVP expert there has told me to remove Norton and then run the Removal Tool to solve my teething problems. I've asked him is this is a temporary removal - he does blame NIS all the time for Update problems. I'll get back.

Don't bother to argue with them! MS are the last to complain about causing problems!

I don't use Edge and have set IE as my default in Windows 10 since I've always used it although I'm having more and more problems with it in Windows 7 so I may move to FF there.
