Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

At least once per week I get a malware type pop-up while browsing that says I have encountered an "Unknown System Failure" and threatens the end of the world unless I call Microsoft Technical Support at 855-385-8544 which of course is not Microsoft.  This entire window locks up all other browser functions.  So far the only out is to use Task Manager to end the browser process and then "not restore" the session upon reopening the browser.  Has anyone else experienced this and can tell me where it comes from and how do I avoid it?

I have attached a screen shot.

Thanks,

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

That is an advertisement for starters and not malware. Seems like you are browsing with Google Chrome? I see 3 different adblockers. That is a huge no no. You can only use 1. I highly suggest you remove all 3 of them and only use 1. uBlock Origin is the best one out there for Chrome. What are you doing or what site are you browsing when this occurs? Have you tried resetting Chrome? You are running Adblock, Adblock Plus and Aguard. Try running Chrome Cleanup Tool after you straighten out the adblocker overload.

Also try the new MalwareBytes AdwCleaner

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

@Brian: please move that microsoft.com-supportkey2.info and iyogi.com to your browsers' blacklist. For more tips, please Google and/or contact Norton Support. If I may ask, what was the name of the site when I encountered the said misleading pop-up?

@floplot: would you please help flag this microsoft.com-supportkey2 .info? Because I got the latter site when the 1st one was opened.

FYI Using the @ mention function does not work for regular forum users. You need to post a reply to a post that the user you are trying to contact has made.

So it is possible that floplot might see this post, it is also possible she may not.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Thanks, didn't notice all 3 popup blockers were active, i had previously disabled them as I had been testing them out one at a time. Will try the uBlock.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

uBlock is the best adblocker available for Google Chrome. It does more then just block ads. It is also very light. You cannot use more then one adblocker at a time. Did you download the programs I recommended?

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Don't recall where I was when this one popped up. I had several tabs still open. It varies from different sessions. I'll try to make note if/when it happens again. It is probably site related since it has happened with FireFox as well.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Well then don't visit that site anymore. Lol

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

I use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpywarePro. will try the Chrome clean-up aswell. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see if it now repeats.  Thanks.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

SAS is a thing of the past and cannot detect today's malware. MalwareBytes acquired AwdCleaner. It is fully portable so it is a great tool to have.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

I hadn't been using Chrome, but after a recent FireFox upgrade, I was having duplicate audio issues with their new Plugin Container for FireFox, so I thought I'd give Chrome a try.

Google Chrome also has built in malware protection. You can find it under settings/ show advanced settings/ protect you and your device from dangerous sites.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Attached is the browser history from this last event.  Perhaps the fact that 3 blockers were running interfered with any one of them's ability to stop this intrusion.  I have been to this site before and not experienced this problem.  So, maybe just clearing out  and  upgrading the pop-up blocker will keep this at bay. Where is the best place to report these links?

Thanks for the conversation and help.

PS:  AdwCleaner did find a couple of things and scrubbed them.  A copy of that log is also attached, fyi.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Well I would highly suggest not going to 'Watch series.to" anymore. That is an illegal torrent site to stream tv shows. No wonder you are getting that popup alert. I know several illegal movie websites which will give you the same alert. The best way to stay safe on line is to not visit shaddy websites. If you insist on doing this I recommed using something like Sandboxie. http :// search . conduit . com/ is an adware site which infects your browser.

Word of advice...............Change your surfing habits. Based on those websites the alert you are seeing while browsing is self inflicted.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Interesting.  I have never gotten any warnings nor any exe links nor do I accept any install pop-ups for drivers or flash upgrades or any of that.  Normally the pop-up and adblockers I have in place diffuse any of that. Again, perhaps since I normally don't use Chrome it is not as effective in blocking unwanted malware, or the fact that there were 3 blockers activated (after I had deactivated them) had something to do with it.  I will try to find a different domain to get my internet entertainment as well. I don't have cable only internet access so my only contact for viewing is via a browser.

Again, thanks for all your feedback.  Have a great day.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Google Chrome is the safest browser around. It has it's own malware protection built in. It also runs each tab isolated in it's own sandbox. Google Chrome with uBlock extension is all you will need. You cannot run more then one adblocker. Chrome has a pop up blocker built in. If you continue to stream tv shows from illegal websites then eventually your computer will be comprised. Good day.

Use Netflix like everyone else does.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

@peterweb: I know that @... then please help@ floplot? TIA

@Brian: I can still visit the said 2 sites by using the latest version of Chrome (v54.0.2840.71 m) at the time of posting. Anyway, you can tell Google what happened to you. And, be careful when using the Internet.

Moreover, I also read the texts you uploaded:

  • issues with riskyware & PUPs: aol.com (aka, AOL Search), the aforementioned search. conduit (aka, Search Protect by Conduit, Trovi Search). com and ask.com (aka, Ask Search, or Search App by Ask). Even MBAM helped delete the said items, I still recommend checking your browser settings like homepage, startup page & clearing out associated remains manually. Try resetting your web tools later if needed. IMPORTANT: 1) Remember to export your personal bookmarks first. 2) Frequently, the latter 2 riskware could be installed when you run some adware based custom installers. 3) In addition, beware of their endless variants/clones (e.g., the removed YSearchUtil, which is also known as Yahoo Search Utility, which is the part of Yahoo! Toolbar, (UPDATED w/) PUP.SearchProtect, etc.) on the web. 4) Learn how to customize the installation process IF your security program does not help block PUAs from downloading, running or installing on your computer, BTW.

Seems you haven't used any Norton product on your computer. Then, click here to compare 'em. Contact Norton Support for more help.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

20750065 aol search and ask search come with Google Chrome. But the default search engine is Google. I have even seen this o new installs of Chrome. The problem is that he is visiting a torrent tv show site which links to adware. As long as he continues to do so then there is no helping the issue.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

@Pats: Neither MBAM nor Adwcleaner flagged/removed the built-in AOL/ Ask engine in Chrome.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

I really appreciate all the feedback and help especially from those who have not been judgmental. I am disabled, live alone, and am on a fixed income so I don't get "to be like everyone else" and pay for cable and netflix or go to the movies and get popcorn. I get to stay at home and browse the web for information and available entertainment. I am at least thankful I have a way to reach out. Thanks again for all the help. I think I have gotten what I needed, so I won't waste anymore of anyone's time.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

20750065.................Are you using Firefox or Chrome portable? Your missing a tab for browsers. There should be a 3rd tab which shows browsers. I use AdwCleaner frequently on customers pc so i know it very well.

Brian Pav please understand something. We are here to help. But what you are doing is illegal. And as long as you continue to visit shady torrent sites no protection in the world can help you. Netflix is only $8/ month. You spent more then that on Norton. There is also Hulu and Amazon prime. If you insist on visiting shady sites which can infect your browser as well as your pc then I highly recommend Sandboxie.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

You also have access to many network shows to stream. These are usually only available in your country, but this too is totally free and legal.

There are many legal and safe sites to get content from. Ask some friends or search for these.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Normally that is only if you are a cable or satellite subscriber. You log into the site with your cable credentials. AMC allows you to watch The Walking Dead without logging in.

If you are in the US, just go to NBC.com and try to stream episodes. I can do this from Canada with my VPN and have no connection to any US cable or satellite company.

You say you do not have cable. Then are you on DSL? Dial up? Gotta have some sort of internet connection.

Re: Windows 10 Unknown System Failure Pop-up

Sorry. I took your Cable or Satellite statement to be about TV service.

Obviously internet service is a necessity.
